Future of Internet
I’m in a summit with Vince Cerf and a bunch of other policy-famous people, listening to them talk about the economic future of the Internet.
I went from a taxi cab listening to Indian music into a room full of mostly white Americans trying to read tea leaves and count beans to determine the larger forces behind the Internet.
Holy cow this job is wild.
Timberlake Snoop Dogg and Eminem
Last night, I hung out with Bryan Person, Steve Garfield, Dan Gorgone, C.C. Chapman, Indigo Tabor’ and later Michael Bailey and Jeff Persch. (sorry no links; I’m on my crackberry at the airport). It was really cool! Conversations ranged from family life to Second Life, with all kinds of tidbits that were both interesting and insightful.
At one point, we talked about the weirdness of people knowing about our day to day, via our blogs, Flickr, Twitter, and Podcasts. And on the other side, we laughed about the occasional rare fame-like moment. Sometimes, people notice some of us while out and about. (not me, but the other guys.)
We repeated the observation, ‘people are people.’
This morning, I wondered if somewhere in the world, Justin, Snoop, and Eminem were saying the same thing over coffee.
Search Party
I love the notion of having ’search parties’ to help you find local info, when you’re elsewhere. Basically, I’m heading to L.A.’ And I need some on the street info.
How would YOU build a network of search parties? How would they help you?
Existential Moment
Big Ideas Small on Time
What if you had a really big idea but no time to execute?
I’ve got an idea chewing on my cycles, one that I mentioned in here before. It’s much more creative than my day to day, but I see now that it’s a fully standalone, fundable, startup idea.
The thing is, I’m already working on a conference that I want to make the premiere conference about video. I’ve got an unconference I’m passionate about, and intend to see grow. I’ve got a startup that we’re working full time on executing.
So, if you had a big idea that would take vision and dedication and time, would it wait?

Disclaimer: I’m not tortured or anything. I’ve got lots on my plate, and I’m enjoying the work. I just want this real big idea to revisit me later. Come back in 18 months, okay?

Description
WHAT: Informal gathering of people interested in internet and mobile innovation. Agenda is to start with a few quick demos by entrepreneurs from self-funded/early-stage start-ups, make introductions all around, and then schmooze the rest of the evening.
WHEN: Tuesday January 30, 2007. Gathering begins at 6:30pm, prior to the demos at 7pm.
WHERE: Royal Sonesta Hotel Cambridge (Parkview Room) across the street from the Cambridgeside Galleria. The address is 40 Edwin Land Boulevard, Cambridge, MA, 02141. It is accessible from both the Lechmere and Kendall/MIT T Stops.
Demonstrations
Following our usual format, we are going to have a few self-funded start-ups and individual innovators briefly demo their product/service in two different forums. First, there will be a couple center-stage presenters giving five minute demos for the entire crowd (aka “main dishes”) at 7pm. In addition, there will be a number of tables set up at the periphery of the room for live informal demonstrations to smaller groups during the schmoozing sessions (aka “side dishes”). Each will help provide the community a glimpse of current local endeavors in the space and offer the basis for further conversation.
If you are interested in presenting in either forum, please e-mail me [david at webinnovatorsgroup dot com] with a quick overview. For more information, see the previous blog post which provides further detail.
Idea Sandbox has No Cat Poop
I love Idea Sandbox. They have a great post today about your elevator pitch, as a TV show. It’s really interesting to see the intros to several shows, and then turn the exercise around on yourself.
But what I love is this: after I posted my comment and hit submit, I got a new page with this:
Thank you for commenting.
No, really. Thanks! The Idea Sandbox blog is intended to be a conversation - not a one-way monologue…
Your comments enable that discussion. To prevent the site from getting jammed up with spam, your submitted comment will be held for review.
Stop back soon,
Paul
I like that. Very nice way to follow up, and far less annoying than captcha.
Superhero- Bre Pettis
Bre Pettis is a Superhero. Now, I know this innately, the way I know when I’m hungry. But I didn’t really have the best way to describe WHY until my wife, Katrina, told me.
“Bre is cool because he always encourages participation.”
The backstory is this: last night (way too late), Bre and I were talking about this and that. I mentioned his recent circuit bending episode, where he hacks a Speak n Spell. I basically was saying that it’s cool people can find things that might interest them, LIKE the circuit bending episode.
His FIRST response right back: I’ll send one to you in the mail so you can hack it yourself.
Can you imagine? The guy is a true catalyst and superhero. Oh, and a side note: Tim O’Reilly, you really get your money’s worth out of Bre. Thanks for making such a cool project happen through your organization. Keep supporting Senor Pettis.
Network2 Contest
Jeff has just announced the Network2 “How to Watch Internet TV” Contest. Basically, make an episode of your Internet TV show, or a post to your videoblog, or a clip to post on Blip.tv or Revver or BrightCove or wherever you can share it with us. The theme should be “How to Watch Internet TV,” and if you work Network2.tv in there, it’ll really work for us.
You don’t have to be on Network2 to submit an entry, but if you’re not yet on Network2, you can always add your show for review.
All the details are here. I hope you give it a shot. Submissions are due by March 9th. Finalists will be announced the 16th, and the winner will be announced at Spring 2007 Video on the Net in San Jose. (We’ll fly the winner out).
Cool? Tell your friends. How many folks who read [chrisbrogan.com] might submit? (I can’t judge, sillies). : )
Small Boxes 15 - NYC
Here’s a little movie showing my trip to New York, especially the New York Video 2.0 Meetup, hosted by Yaron Samid of Pando. You can see Andrew, Jeff, Michael Smolens, David Dumas, Aaron Cohen, and um… is that everyone? So, check it out. Oh! Dina was there, too!
