On the Occasion of My 43rd Birthday

SuperheroBasement250 I have been fortunate enough to live on this planet and learn every day for 43 years. I do feel old. My body is stiff and sore. My eyes get tired fast. My hairline is slowly receding back. There is more white in my beard than any other color. And I love it.

But, because of this passage of time, I found myself thinking of my childhood, my very nerdy and weird and quirky childhood. And I thought of some of the stories that would never likely see the light of day, made from normal moments, and sometimes imagined moments. And I started writing. And writing and writing. And I put together an entire book of (not really) poems. And I’m going to stuff this in the Kindle store, but because it’s my birthday, I wanted to give you a copy for free. Because that seems right. Gifts to you on my birthday. : )

If you see the awesome artwork at the top of the post (supplied by his awesomeness, Josh Fisher), click it and that’ll take you straight to a pdf file. If you want to download it, simply right-click or command click and select “save as” and you can download it onto your whatever or read it at your leisure on your computer.

It’s nerdy stuff. It’s fun for me to have written it. It might resonate with you in some way or another. The references are obscure. You’ll either feel like we shared a similar childhood or you’ll be lost and feel like I am speaking another language. Either way, I win!

The book is here. Enjoy.

UPDATE

The book is now live in the Kindle store on Amazon. If you’ve read the book, would you consider writing me a review? : )

Thank you for the gift Chris!

Reading your poems there was two key moments.

The first one was a “I-Can’t-Believe-This-ME-TOO” moment when I read the “shitting myself” poem. Only mine was more related with peeing myself! I was really young at the time (the kind of young where the “teachers” tell us to sleep in the afternoon). So everyone was already sleeping in a big room when I asked (in a very soft voice so I wouldn’t wake up my friends of course) if I could go to the bathroom. The teacher didn’t said anything or at least I didn’t hear her. So I decided to go to sleep again. When I woke up my bed was all wet… Couldn’t believe this. Oh! And the teacher grounded me. My parents removed me from that place – Thank God! :D

The second key moment was a breakthrough moment when I read your “sim city” piece. It reminded me of how we’re wired to escape our mortality by serving a purpose that will outlast it. Something unforgettable enough that people would adopt as part of who they are. Something worthwhile enough to make a meaningful impact in the World.

Isn’t what we all look for before we die? All our memories. All our wisdom. All our ideas. 10 years from now who will remember them. 100 years? 1000 years?

Who will remember who we were and why it matters?

For a long time I’ve been thinking about these questions and from all the answers that I’ve come up with, no one came close to what LOVE can do.

And that’s my wish to you on your birthday: that you may enjoy your day surrounded with LOVE and that you keep sharing it with others!

Thank you, my friend. LOVE is a really great gift, indeed.

And yes, surviving our own death is indeed the game, right?

Happy birthday, Chris. Have a wonderful day/weekend/week… how ever long it takes you to celebrate. And by the way, you’re not old. I’m 47 and I refuse to be old. There’s just too much I want to get done. No time for grey hairs (dye) or aching bones. The world isn’t slowing down and neither should we.

    Thank you for the poems.
