9 Ways to Rock Blog World Expo

Lisa Barone and Chris Brogan

If you’re interested in blogging in any capacity and you’re not going to BlogWorld Expo, you’re missing out. It’s a lot of smart people in one place, and a lot of opportunities for you to make important contacts and connections. But you have to prepare, if you want to get something out of the experience. Here are 9 ways to rock your experience at BlogWorld Expo.

1 – Do Your Homework

Before the event, search Twitter for people talking about going. Make a list of people you definitely want to meet. If you’re not sure who they are, read a few blog posts. Ask Google who they are. Make plans to meet them the first day, if you can. Time passes fast and weird at events like this.

2 – Bring Three Good Questions

You get out of these events what you put into them. Spend a half hour or so thinking through some good questions. Don’t you dare show up with “how can I improve my blogging?” Show up with, “I’m interested in understanding more about affiliate marketing but I’ve always thought it was a bit scammy. Am I wrong? I sure would love to make a few extra bucks.” That’s something to dig into. Find someone like Nalts or Steve Garfield and ask them how their use of video has changed over the last year, and where they’re headed in 2011.

3 – Bring Business Cards

I’m personally a bit burned out about business cards. The problem, most times, is that we exchange them without any real next business steps in mind. My thinking on cards has 3 parts:

  • Exchange cards only if you intend to do further business. If you just want to follow each other, that’s something else.
  • Ask for their card, if you need it. That means you can get back to them, whereas handing over your card means you have to wait for them to get to you.
  • Do NOT go home and add that person to your mailing list.

4 – Plan Your Path Ahead of Time

Lots of people meander. They go where the tweets take them. They go to this or that party. I’ll admit that I’m good for a meander. But if you’re spending good money (yours or your company’s) to be there, take a moment and peruse the schedule of events. And as for the parties, it’s great to get out and socialize. It’s less useful to get out and get blotto so that you can barely attend the next day. It’s not pretty, and we all have cameras.

5 – Go Off-Topic

Another great opportunity you might miss is the chance to attend something that doesn’t relate directly to what you do. Here’s a hint: it’s called an echo chamber because we’re all in it saying the same thing. Visit someone else’s echo chamber and see what you can learn from it. Try at least one event or speech from someone else’s track.

6 – Meet the Up and Comers

Everyone wants to meet the “big names” or whatever, but you’ll get so much more mileage out of meeting fellow up-and-comers. The best people I meet at these events are people you’ve not yet heard of, but who are doing amazing things. Or maybe you know their name, but don’t consider them to be the best thing since sliced bread. Meet those people, and people like Glenda Watson Hyatt (I told you back in 2008 to meet her – have you? Although, technically, she’s not an up-and-comer any more. Glenda’s big time.)

7 – Make Some Media

One opportunity most people forget about is the chance to make some media. Don’t shoot interviews with just the big names. Get together and collaborate. One of my favorite random collaborations was the Always Be Charging site from another event. I think things like that – spontaneous creativity – are worth their weight in gold. Plus, I wished I’d thought of ABC.

8 – Thank the Organizers

If you haven’t met Rick Calvert and/or the rest of his team who put on BlogWorld Expo, make sure you stop them very briefly in the hall and thank them for the event. They put their heart and soul into it every year. They do it for you. Believe me, though there’s some money being made, there are 1000 headaches to each dollar earned, so give them a little love.

9 – Finish Strong

When you get home, do your contacts and follow-up right after you kiss your family hello and treat them to a great meal. Write back to the people whose cards you took. Drop a line. Upload your photos and tag them. Get that video edited. Write that blog post you totally delayed writing because you enjoyed yourself too much at slots.

BlogWorld Expo is a Great Event

Have a good year at BlogWorld Expo and do what you can to rock the event. There’s a great mix of celebrities (the kind from the TV and movies), as well as industry leaders, but mostly, there are amazing people and great relationships to be had. I hope you find it one of your best events of the year.

    Thanks Chris.

A quick list of mine for BlogWorld Expo:

    1. Be prepared to answer the question, “…how has your use of video has changed over the last year, and where are you headed in 2011.” LOL

    2. Have a nice dinner with a small group. Large groups have a problem deciding where to go if there’s no leader, and they end up at the same kind of chain restaurant that you could go to in your home town.

    3. If you are presenting, give people some specific knowledge that they can take away from the event. I like to do more SHOW, than TELL.

    4. If you want to make sure we connect, come to my session on “videopodcasting 101″, (they wouldn’t let me change the name), is Friday 12:15 – 1:15 PM in Tradewinds E&F 7. I’ll also be doing a book signing at the Wiley booth from on Friday from 2-3.

    5. If you see me in a hallway, make sure you say hello. It’s going to be a lot like SXSW where you’ll only see someone for a moment, and if you don’t say hi then, you might not see them again.

    6. If I look like I’m busy, come say hi anyway. See above. Like Chris, I don’t like hearing that I looked like I was too busy to talk to. I’m not.

    7. If you want to keep in touch after meeting someone, stop and send them an email right away. Say something like, “we just met at blogworldexpo and I want to make sure we stay in touch, here’s my info.”

    See you in Vegas.

Great post, Chris. Great additions, Steve.

Julia and I will be in Vegas during BWE but not attending or speaking. Hopefully we can catch up with you both at some point that week.

      Keep leading, guys.

This sounds like a fantastic event, but the pricing for full and weekend passes is so out of this world expensive that I’m not sure if I could justify it, even if my family wasn’t on a very small income (2 kids, and I’m only partially employed).

Are the exhibits-only passes worth it? And what advice do you have for the exceptionally cash-strapped blogger when it comes to events like this?

    • http://stevegarfield.com Steve Garfield

Just like at SXSW, everything happens in the hallways. There’s lots of great sessions going on, but if you can’t go to them, you’ll have a great experience meeting people in the hallways.

Thanks for the input, Steve. I’m not sure I can swing the plane ticket from NH, but it’s good to know that the hallways are where the action’s at.

I promise you E. Christopher the exhibits only pass is absolutely worth the $. If you don’t agree with me after the show let me know and I will personally refund your $35. Please come and say hello.

Glad to hear it. As I mentioned to Steve below, I’m not sure I can afford the plane ticket, but it’s good to know that an exhibits only pass would be good enough if I could.

Thanks for this list! I’ll be a newb at this event, coming from far away just for it, but luckily I have several contacts there already. I’ll try not to stick to them and spread my wings a bit, while applying these tips!

Might even run into Chris yourself – look out for the multilingual Irish guy!

  • http://scrapsofmygeeklife.com scrappinmichele

Thanks for the tips. I have begun to do my Pre conference research of attendees, speakers and companies. I have found that the more prepared I am leads to a more successful conference for me.

I’m excited to be going this year. I’ve been studying the session schedule and going to speaker’s blogs to help me decide which sessions to go to. There are so many good session topics.

I am a firm believer that you will get as much out of a conference as you put into it.

Look forward to running into you.

Oh… And I totally agree on the girl’s hair. It is my most dreaded task every morning. LOL!

    Chris –

Looking forward to seeing you as well as a bunch of “new” people in Vegas. Thanks for including, “Do NOT go home and add that person to your mailing list” under BRING BUSINESS CARDS. The one modification I would add to that would be, “…UNLESS you have asked them explicitly if it would be okay.”

Chris! Thanks for this ‘planning’ reminder. I am speaking at BlogWorld so I am excited about the conference on several levels. Rumor has it you will not be attending which I assume means you’ve got a lot of other things going at this time — so, good for you but not for me! Was hoping to say hello. I’m in west hartford so maybe I’ll just have to shoot up to Boston one of these days instead! I’m sure our paths will cross sooner or later and I’m looking forward to it. Until then… we’ll miss ya in vegas!

I’m so excited about going to bwe10 this year that I feel like I’m gonna lose it. It was so painful in the beginning when I lived in Vegas and couldn’t go, but like Steve said, everything happens in the hallways – it did outside, down the hall, and around the corner too. You and the other commenters have inspired me to spend the next month doing lots of Blog World detective work, especially in areas I haven’t delved into.

Thanks, Chris.I’m not lying when I say this is going to be the best BlogWorld ever, either. Lots of good stuff in store this year.

I’d like to add one more to your mix, probably goes with the “up and comer” thing – Meet people you don’t know. We all have a list of people we want to meet because we talk to them on Twitter or blogs. I say, take it further. Find some people who you have no clue who they are and what they do and chat them up. You may be surprised at what you learn and make some new best friends.

I agree, Deb – so many people run around trying to get a moment with “the biggies” when there are unbelievable, but lesser known, attendees sitting right next to them in the hallway or at a breakout session.

Chris, thanks for mentioning that in your post. Up-and-comers are the folks to meet. :)

    • http://thesocialjoint.com/ Lucretia M Pruitt

Some of the people I’ve met at BWE over the years have *become* the “big timers” – I fully expect to meet some more of ‘tomorrow’s stars’ there again this year. Talking to people you’ve never met before is somehow easier at BWE because there’s so many people to choose from! :)

  • http://johnmclachlan.posterous.com John McLachlan

I have my work cut out for me. I will be attending and I always have a tough time at conferences, the biggest of which is just saying hi to people. Once I do, no problem. I’m sure I’m not alone.

      • http://scrapsofmygeeklife.com scrappinmichele

What a great idea. I am shy too, but I have worked very hard to overcome it.

I finally decided that there really was no harm in saying, “Hi, my name is…” The worst that could happen is they don’t hear me or they blow me off. No skin off my back because there are many others that will respond. Once I got over that and did it quite a few times…it got easier.

Now, that is the best part of conferences for me. Networking and meeting new people (did I just say that?!)

      • http://thesocialjoint.com/ Lucretia M Pruitt

I now fully expect to see hundreds of “shy” buttons – because we all feel that way sometimes… I’ve always been partial to Jenny’s (the Bloggess) confidence wigs. I just have my “on/off” button that stays jammed in the “on” position throughout most conferences.
Hm. I think you’re onto something here Chris!

        • http://scrapsofmygeeklife.com scrappinmichele

LOL! I always need a week or two to decompress after spending so much time being “on” at conferences.

I find that I don’t want to bother people… it’s from a strange Australian upbringing… A couple of times in my past I’ve been kind of “that guy” due to overcompensating for my introvertedness and frankly not knowing any better and feeling incredibly awkward because of it. The nice thing with conferences like Blogworld is that you only have to meet one or two people and they will introduce you to people and do the work for you. Actually Chris introduced me to someone who is now a great friend (Muhammad Saleem – thanks Chris!) at this year’s sxsw blogger lounge. I’ve found it’s all about being yourself and genuine. I actually tried not to “network” and just be myself and it’s worked out far better. I’ve also made some great and real friends out of it, not just business contacts.

      • http://johnmclachlan.posterous.com John McLachlan

Scott, good advice. I like to blame my shyness on being Canadian, but that’s just a cop-out. :-)

Just getting past the first bit like you say (in the blogger lounge) would go a long way. It’s so silly to be shy.

Also, as you point out, “not” networking is the ticket. Thanks.

        Family. :)

The solid finish is key. (And I love all this advice.) I can be in a golden haze of goodness all the way through the conference, but if I don’t follow up strong, it doesn’t add up.

Every day I learn something here, or get reinforced for doing the right thing.

    Thank you.

Hi Jens. To bad you can’t come. But I know it is expensive coming here all the way from Norway.

I live here in the US, but this will be my first time at Blog Expo. Really excited about it. And I took good notes of Chris Brogans tip here. I got the Weekend Pass for the Event. Great list for any conference/event, Chris, thanks. RE: business cards, I would consider ordering free cards from Vistaprint with only the applicable info, in this case: blog name & URL, Twitter handle & avi, & maybe a great quote. And if able, I like to write something on the back that will remind them of our convo.

ZOOMG I cannot even tell you how excited I am for BlogWorld this year. Last year was epic…this one will Blow Your Mind.

Rick, Dave, Deb and the rest have really outdone themselves.

I met SO MANY amazing folks last year and I intend to do it again.

You are absolutely right Chris…it’s not about “hanging on” to the big names, it’s about talking to the guy or gal seated next to you. You just never know what collaborations and new projects are to be born by simply paying attention and TALKING to people.

And of course…there is always TechKaraoke (shameless plug). Yes…House of Blues…Vegas, baby.

What’s this TechKaraoke thing you refer too? Ice Ice Baby happens to be my go to song. Maybe I’ll dye my hair red or pink…just to blend in.

          See you all there!

Chris, thanks for the mention! I’m only “big time” because I’ve been fortunate to have giving and gracious mentors like you, Liz, Becky and others. Thank you for being who you are and what you do.

I am looking forward to Blogworld as the opportunity to share IRL space with all the wonderful people I have grown to love and appreciate + a bonus of discovering all of the new wonderful future friends and mentors I will have the honor of meeting this time around. We are one lucky family!

    Chris,

Good tips. Very good tips. One for me is get in front of the camera and not always behind it. While I come home with tons of great shots of other people I find that I am not always in many.

I’ll have to add that to my talk which is Friday at 2:45pm and is called Content You Care About with an intro to Audio, Video and my favorite Photography. I hope that everyone who is going to attend is able to spare a moment and come see me. Also I have prizes, tings that have come to me over the past year that I have too many of and am willing to part with during the session. So come check it out.

Oh and there will be more than one photowalk during the event. This is a great way to meet other bloggers in a fun and informal way.

Dear Chris, this is a lovely post but is Amy right – aren’t you going?! I’ve moved mountains to be there and will be zipping in from Australia specially. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and look out for you… In the mean time many thanks for all these tips. They’re handy but reading them and all the comments does make me feel a bit panicky! How will I fit it all in?

I think it’s better to try to meet less people and have a meaningful chat than to try to meet hundreds of people and end up not being able to remember anything about any of them. Same as when you travel really – less places and more time makes for a more rewarding cultural exchange.

I’m really looking forward to it and will be looking out for all these lovely commenters too:)

This will be our first BlogWorld Chris and your 9 ways to rock it will be invaluable. We will have cameras in hand, videos at the ready and a very good idea of who we want to see & meet while we’re there. Leaving sometime for the serendipitous and I think the MidLife Road Trip can expect a very productive trip. Thanks for the very valuable insight!

There are some events that you needed to drop your business card and during the whole activity, they will try to pick random business cards and give freebies. I just received a cellphone by just dropping a card.
