Allow for Air

I talk too much.

When I’m nervous, I try to be funny. When I’m worried people don’t like me, I try to be funny. I often eat too much air out of the room.

It’s important when you talk with people in group settings to set them up for conversations. It’s all in the questions. You have to put on your Terry Gross hat and say, “Tell me about your projects.” That’s a starter question. “What are you passionate about?” There’s another.

Be wary of eating all the air. Two ears, one mouth.

Unrelated: there’s a LOT of Seth Godin footage on Google Video for free.

Yes, that’s a good old Dale Carnegie standby. Ask great questions at the start and establish that you’re interested in what the other person is doing.

I particularly liked Godin’s “This is Broken” lecture. Good stuff, that!
