American Family Insurance and Madison Wisconsin

Chris Brogan - What me? A while back, I had the pleasure of speaking to the folks at American Family Insurance, thanks to the thoughtful planning of Troy Janisch. What was interesting about the trip was that I felt that AmFam (as everyone seems to call them, so why get in the way?) were already in pretty good hands with Troy (yes, I know the competitive pun). But there are two great things about my trip that I wanted to highlight, and then I just wanted to say nice things about the people of Madison, Wisconsin.

Learning And Openness Are Attractive

The CrowdTroy and the rest of the people of American Family Insurance are very far into social media. They started long before I showed up at their facility. And yet, they had me in to share with me what they’d already done, but also to be open to my ideas, to see if something new would strike them as useful. American Family pushes constant learning. They don’t stand pat on what they know, and that was very evident in their culture, from the wonderful room where I got to speak, to the way people took in the information I shared, they were most certainly a culture that valued learning and openness to ideas.

Support is Everything

Attendees meeting Chris BroganTroy Janisch was clearly well-supported by the senior team. He’s a smart guy, with a lot of actionable ideas, and yet possesses the steady hand of someone who understands the speed of enterprise change. One of the reasons I’m blessed to speak at big companies like American Family is that I know that change doesn’t happen on the turn of a dime, and in this belief, I met my match with Troy Janisch. He knew pacing better than most people I encounter in the field, and even better, he had the support of a strong, smart senior team that believed in what Troy and his team were trying to accomplish.

The People of Madison Wisconsin

Miri McDonald Patti Cohen Jennifer Braun I met many wonderful and smart people in Madison, Wisconsin. For instance, all these photos were taken by the tireless Wendy Soucie, who had a spirit and drive that reminded me of my dear friend Whitney Hoffman. All of the people I met in Madison were that great blend of “real world tested” and “social media savvy.” Often times, I’ll get one but not the other. Neither is ever wrong, but when you get the blend, you recognize it and nod. (I felt this way about the social media people of Louisville, Kentucky, by the way.)

The people of Madison, Wisconsin are worth a visit, all on their own, but visiting American Family Insurance and learning how far they’ve come with their social media efforts and their amplification of learning (catch it, Troy?) meant that enterprise adoption of these tools is here for some, and spreading to the mainstream. Interesting times, friends.

Madison is a great town … so happy you could visit us – come again soon!

  • http://twitter.com/wendysoucie Wendy Soucie

You have to thank Sydney Lindner and Paul Banas of Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods for making the connection and pulling the right strings so that Chris could ride in style to the airport, I just had to ask and they made it happen. Also our two favorite hotdoggers Tara and Rachel who were on their first official drive with precious cargo. They were awesome singers as well and serenaded Chris and I with the OSCAR Mayer Wiener Song. Yes of course we joined in – how could you not.

Loved the article Chris. It so interesting to meet the cool people of Madison but it is great that two greats are pictured together. The Great Blog Communicator and the Great Hot Dog Communicator:)

I have a friend that moved from NJ to Madison WI and he and his family swear it’s the nicest place on Earth – probably the best sense of community anywhere. When people live their LIVES that way it’s not hard to see how they can live their WORK that way.

AMFAM have a number of innovative social media programs in a difficult industry (regulatory environment and compliance). I think some of the ‘creative’ industries could actually learn from this insurance company but unlikely to take a look with the industry having a ‘dull’ reputation.

Sad to have missed your tour Chris. As luck would have it I was in AZ. I heard lots of good things about your visit and the info and tips you shared. We are lucky to have a great social media leader like AMFAM doing some pretty cool stuff. Thanks for the visit to Madison.

Interesting story about your time with AM Family Insurance. I would like to make one point however. Just because you “get” social media doesn’t make you a great company. Case in point is American Family Insurance. Last year, my jaguar ingested bad gas at a BP station. They were insured by American Family. I contacted American Family, forwarded my receipts for damages and they said they would be happy to help me. EXCEPT- are you ready for this. They would not reimburse me for the tank of gas that caused the $2,000 damage to my car. Yep, paid everything else, but the $25 I paid for the bad gas was not covered. How messed up of a corporate policy is that? And these people “get” social media, but don’t get how stupid that type of corporate bullshit thinking is. So now i get to share this story many times each year and spread how bad American Family Insurance is. All because they wouldn’t pay me $25 for my tank of gas. Stupid, lame, and corporate bullshit- but they get social media, lol.

I wonder what your reaction would have been if they would have paid for the $25.00 gas you purchased and told you that you were on your own for the $2,000.00 in repairs.

      Whine whine whine.
