Audience GPS Monkey- Presentation Tips from Gopal Shenoy

After the New Marketing Summit, I got a chance to speak to Gopal Shenoy about many things, but one thing we got into was about presentations. Out of nowhere, Gopal says something like, “Oh, when I help people to do better presentations, I tell them ‘Audience, GPS, Monkey.’” He said it so naturally that I was sure he believed himself, but I thought, “did he really say ‘audience, GPS, monkey?’” He did.   • It's great to see this trend of learning to present better. There are so many resources out there now like Presentation Zen [http://www.presentationzen.com/] and my favorite: watching the master, Steve Jobs, present at Apple keynotes.

    So why aren't I attending better presentations? Hmm....

    Anyone else seen an improvement?
  • Fantastic points, delivered effectively. I highly recommend that from here, people check out Garr Reynolds fantastic blog on presentations, Presentation Zen. One of my favorite Presentation Zen posts is the one where he gives us some video clips of Presentation humor. I can't believe there's a stand-up comic (Don McMillan) who makes an audience roar with laughter over bad Powerpoints. But more seriously, Garr sheds light on a variety of great speakers and analyzes their styles so that we can develop our own. Combine Presentation Zen with Made to Stick, and you've got the principles for successful presentations.

    Actually, these are the kinds of things I keep trying to teach the people I work with in my office. Accountants and lawyers are notoriously difficult to get to use PWPT effectively. (Pictures? How are those better than putting up the 700 words from the section of the code?) Going to start using the GPS analogy with them. Maybe they'll start to get it.
