[...] Chris Brogan once said that “the difference between an Audience and a Community is which way the chairs are pointing.” What he meant by that is that it’s just as much your job to help sustain them as it is theirs to sustain you. An audience just sits and listens. A community participates. [...]

Community vs Audience is an interesting concept and the crossover point is what is the main focus here. By engaging with your audience to the point that they get actively involved in your mission (if that is your ultimate goal, although sometimes your audience can spring a surprise on you and take the next step without that actually being your ultimate intent....LOL) you have to go through a process of winning them over and converting them into active prophets, in a manner of speaking.

[...] But a large collection of users by itself isn’t a community. Our community shares common goals and interests. How can you have a community without communication? We constantly talk and debate in our forums and in our blog (our blog is ranked in the top 50 worldwide in the AdAge Power150). Our customer service team talks to hundreds of users every day – tens of thousands every year about great suggestions on ways that we can improve. We interact daily with thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook (we follow nearly everyone who follows us – we do this because we learn from others and we don’t want to stop learning.
Hi Chris. I'm becomming familiar with blogging through the Kidilit challenge. Your post here about 'audience or community' is food for thought. This is what I'd like to accomplish eventually with my blog. I find that I enjoy the blogs that have some isight to offer regarding writing for children and keeping up with the publishing world, or offer inspiration. What works best for me are blogs that are not too long yet make a point, or I would be reading blogs when I should be writing (or cooking dinner). I will definitely refer back to this post for my own benefit, and share with my blogging friends. Thanks.
