Audio Podcast-Confidence

In this post, I uploaded an audio podcast I recorded on my drive home, talking about confidence. It’s a quick discussion on what confidence is, how people react to confidence, and tips for building your confidence. It’s fairly brief, so I hope you can give it a listen. Let me know what you think.

This has a background noise (although faint) as though it was recorded in a car.

I’ve always wanted a nice recorder to record those great car-thoughts. Not too related to the episode, since I just started playing it.

It was recorded in my car on the ride home using an Edirol R-09 MP3 recorded, and then amplified and compressed using Audacity.

    Great conversation.

Confidence is a mindset. Overconfidence / arrogance is THE OPPOSITE of confidence; it’s the falsified external lie we tell people when we KNOW we’re not sure.

The most confident people in the world are also the most sedate because they don’t feel the need to make their case public. They KNOW they’re competent, and therefore confident.

That’s great food for thought Chris. It’s funny that you brought up when you and Chris started PodCamp. I was just thinking today about when you guys were batting around the idea in the N.E. Podcasters group, and someone mentioned about getting someone famous, and CC talking about looking inward and we should be confident that some great podcasters where right here in the Boston area. That what you, and Mr Penn, and all the took on the task are, confident, and never cocky. We all need to see that in each other, as a reminder of what we need to be. Thanks for your podcast.

George- a little clarity. I was the dumbass that mentioned we should get someone famous or big named to show up. I meant “as well as all the great people we have here at the NE Podcasters group,” but it was taken differently.

Chris Penn says about me all the time that you have to take me everywhere twice: the second time is to apologize. ; )

Chris – excellent podcast. I really liked the pilot example!

As we try to guage how, well, confident, to be in someone elses confidence, it can easy to mistake presence for confidence, or to overlook confidence in someone who doesn’t have presence.

Many of the really good/great leaders I’ve met seem to have a finely honed sense of intuition in differentiating between presence and confidence in the people they interact with…

For me the last 6 months have been about identifying what blocks my confidence about certain areas of my life and confronting them.

Sometimes, I am only making token gestures, but even these efforts have had a strong overall effect on my confidence. Just like with GTD, sometimes getting the quick and easy issues off your plate gives you the lift you need to move on to the bigger things.

I need to get back to carcasting, btw. Thanks for reminding me, Kemosabe!

Just had a morning where I spoke to a listener of the show, and it gave me an energy and confidence I haven’t felt in a while. I get energized from talking with friends and friends to be- we can’t skip that “extending the conversation” part of the equation.

    Great podcast, Chris!

Funny that you used the pilot analogy. I don’t fly often so I am a very nervous flier. I went to Paris a few weeks ago and I was really afraid of the flight.

    1) It took a lot of baby steps for me to check prices online for flights and hotels, then actually call up a travel agent, choose dates, choose a flight, etc.

    2) During take off, I kept thinking in my mind how the other passengers around me didn’t seem to be nervous and how the person sitting next to me was on his 2nd of 3 flights of that day.

    3) Once we were in the air, I was actually enjoying flying (until they played Bridget Jones Diary).

Of course, once we landed, I was nervous about flying back. Like I said, baby steps…

I can attest to what you said in your show with what I learned from my trip; competence drives confidence (taking baby steps), confidence is the absence of doubt (trust in the pilot and airline industry) and people like being around confident people (other passengers weren’t afraid).
