Audio-The Down Engine

This is a short audio post to address a comment about my recent posts from when I was feeling a bit down. The commenter, a good friend, wondered why I would write blog posts about being down, when the general nature of my blog is about positive things like community and self-improvement.

My answer is that I believe it’s important to remember that your heroes are human, that humans experience the full range of emotions, and that it’s important to understand where one can get strength from their dealing with down moments. I talk about my “Captain America vs. Batman” concept, and I give you pointers on what’s good to say when someone you care for is feeling down.

The audio is exactly 5 minutes long.

    Mayor,

How true. And so heartfelt. I’m happy to hear about what’s going on in your life, good or bad. That’s a part of us. The yang to our yin. I’m with you all the way on your thoughts … eh, except one — Superman is not human.

I love to see that you are still writing. I wanted to point out to you that linkedin does have the ability to group your various networks. If you look at my profile you will see that I belong to BostonYEO. This is a group of entrepreneurs that started a sub-group within LinkedIn. If you go to the web-site they give you specific instructions on how to create and maintain your own groups.

    Chris:

What a great post…I am new to blogging and to this point have fearfully treaded to show myself for who and what I really am.

I am not interested in selling a fabricated, overly positive, hyper-spiritual version of who or what I am on my site. That would be good for PR in the church, which is my target audience, but I am not looking to be what everybody else is in the church…I’m looking to be an agent of change.

Hopefully what I do will be liberating to others hwo think their expression of faith needs to fit into a box that match the expectations from the subculture I hang out in.

THANK YOU for this post…I really appreciate your insights.

LOL, I think it’s just that Chris took some time to gather his thoughts before speaking, we’re used to Brogan unfiltered and uncut. Or do you mean he just sounds like some other dude altogether?

I’ve always been an open book in my blog writing style, but I pepper the “down” times with some encouragement, too. There’s nothing more depressing than to read somebody who is either ALWAYS happy or ALWAYS sad.

Striking a balance between the two regardless of your own life’s circumstances is the key to success…in blogging and in life.

But, trust me, your readers will let you know when you’re too down for them! They’re BRUTALLY honest with YOU! :)

    GREAT TOPIC, Chris!

Being down happens, and sometimes it’s downright onerous! But the same can be said about being continously happy. Finding that spot, perfectly balanced, now that takes talent. Wonderful to know you’re still an equal opportunity humanist!

    Chris,
I wasn’t sure, but I’m glad to know you are human :) Lots of us try to think positive, but life is very challenging so give yourself a break sometimes!
When I start to feel down, it is also from being overwhelmed with all my responsibilities. But, I am also lucky to be the one trusted with them.
It is great to know that we can be ourselves, weather we are in a good mood or not.
Your true friends will still love you either way!
You are right.. most people don’t know how to deal with people in a bad mood.
I’m so glad you spoke about that!
This is one of the best podcasts I’ve heard! (I’ve heard a lot!)
