Be Nice Today

April 30, 2007

Cole and Chris I’m hopping on a plane in a few hours to go to the Killer App Expo, but I had a thought I wanted to get out to you quickly: be nice today. What do I mean by that?

Today, pay someone a compliment, something heartfelt that you never thought to tell them before. Make them feel that you mean it by truly meaning it.

Today, call someone you have been meaning to call, and just check in. No business. Nothing special. Just check in and say hi.

Today, kiss your loved ones an extra time. Even if you kissed them 10 times goodbye, go all the way to eleven.

And smile just a bit more today. Just today. See what happens.

Today’s not my day. Maybe tomorrow. Or not.

‘Eleven? Why not just make ten *mean more*?’

[…] Chris Brogan blogged this morning about today being a day to be nice to someone, so I figured I’d take the contrarian view (sort of) and recommend that today, you be an asshole. […]

Chris you look marvelous!

This is a great lesson-treat everyone not only the way you would want to be treated, but how you treat your favorite aunt. Even when I am getting ticked off at a customer service rep about a problem, I realize they did not personally cause my problem, they are in charge of helping. So express your frustration, sure, but remember that if you treat them like a person, they feel better, you feel better, and you might even find your problems solved a bit faster.
Trust me, I worked as a customer service rep for a student loan company during college. Getting yelled at for 6+ hours a day really sucks, and I would make extra efforts to help people who were kind on the phone.

Chris after reading this post you made me realize I need to find that special artist/geek in my life. I am officially out of a long off and on relationship and and think this post is a good sign to start letting someone in :-). Bet you didn’t think you would spearhead a decision like this, did you? hahahahaha

I hugged her closer, I kissed her forehead more, and I made her smile and laugh as much as I could. It was, very much, an excellent day.

Chris: I followed your advice, but I think I must have got the details mixed up. The facilities here in jail are nice, and they even let me use the computer for a few minutes. Please wire me some cash so I can post bail!

Just kidding… Great suggestions!

I can do this. This is easy
