Flirting With Faith – Video Book Review

Books about people finding faith can be either annoying or compelling. I’ve rarely found a middle ground with such things. Joan Ball’s Flirting with Faith: My Spiritual Journey from Atheism to a Faith-Filled Life (amazon affiliate link) is the latter. It was a great story of an imperfect person finding a strange-but-compelling link to her faith. It has notes of Anne Lamott, or rather, that’s pretty much the person we non-religious readers can think of at times like this. It’s on the same bookshelf as Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.…

Pick up Facebook Marketing – Video Book Review

It took me a little while to read my coworker, Justin Levy’s new book, Facebook Marketing: Designing Your Next Marketing Campaign (amazon affiliate link), but mostly because I’m still on the fence no the value of Facebook as a marketing tool. Justin did a great job of convincing me that I should give it another look, thanks to his work in defining everything clearly with a lot of examples. Even discounting for the bias of working with Justin, I couldn’t help but appreciate his view of Facebook, and I learned a lot from the plentiful examples in the book. If you’re going to try marketing using Facebook, you’d do well to pick up Facebook Marketing

The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working – Video Book Review

My friend, Adam, sent me a copy of Tony Schwartz’s The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance (amazon affiliate link). It’s the kind of book I’m afraid people will buy but not read, or that you’ll read it but not do what it recommends. There’s a lot in it, and I think it’s a very worthwhile book to check out. Essentially, Mr. Schwartz believes we’re not doing enough to take care of ourselves during any given work day (and I think he’s right).

The book throws you some neat turns, including a lot of nutrition advice.…

An Escape Velocity Bookshelf

I just used PopShops to build an “Escape Velocity Bookshelf.” (Can’t see it below? CLICK HERE). You’ll recall that I’ve been very big on escape velocity (the ability to leave a situation that isn’t helpful or desired) for a little while now. It’s actually my big thing for 2010-2011 (and maybe beyond). My goal is to help people humanize business, and find their escape velocity.

In saying this, I’m talking about either adding a few bucks to your bottom line, and/or people who break out of their employee role and take on an owner’s view of the world.…

Dads and Dads and Dads

Because of Dadomatic, I get books sent to me because I’m a dad. Two of the books I received recently were The Modern Dad’s Dilemma (amazon affiliate link) and The Book of Dads: Essays on the Joys, Perils, and Humiliations of Fatherhood (amazon affiliate link). Both were interesting, and both had weird beginnings that made me think I wasn’t going to like them, but I ended up liking both. You’ll see a bit of my trepidation in my video book review. Don’t get me wrong. Both books are solid. See what you think.

People always ask which camera I used to shoot my video. I use the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (that’s a review of the camera).

Leisure – This is Not a Game

I don’t do a lot of leisure reading, but I blazed through Walter John Williams’ This Is Not a Game (amazon affiliate link), a book with an adventurous plot woven around alternate reality gaming and social networking (mostly message boards). You know, there are some really poignant and interesting points in the book, it reads fast (in the action sense) and there are puzzles to consider. I never did go see if any of the details resolved to anything “real” online, a la the great works of J.C. Hutchins, who is a god in the space of weaving his stories into the web and back into a book, but I suspect Williams might have done some neato things, if you want to go digging.…

Learn What Women Want

No, I’m not writing a porn post. I’m talking about a great new book called Influence: How Women’s Soaring Economic Power Will Transform Our World for the Better (amazon affiliate link) sent to me by my friend, Love Streams. The book gives us a lot to think about with regards to how women’s income is on the rise, how women and men are gaining opportunities to choose who stays home, and many more interesting points and ideas. If you need to understand women as a business person, this book has a lot of interesting data points and ideas to consider. Here’s my quick video review (shot by Kat):

You can get the book here:
