Charity Auction- Fight Cancer and Buy Me Cheap

May 27, 2008

Jennifer Leggio is training for a marathon and working to help fight leukemia and lymphoma at the same time. She’s looking to raise $10,000, and she’s got a creative approach to doing it.

My cousin, Todd, died from Leukemia when I was a kid. I have weird/funny memories of him, including the fact my Mom made us Star Trek uniforms. I was Kirk, my brother Thom was Spock, and Todd was a red shirt. Turned out that life was pretty much that way for all three of us, as a side note.

More recently, on the plane to attend ITEC Detroit, I sat next to a young woman who graduated from nursing school to go work with kids with leukemia. I asked her why she picked that field. She said, because I survived. I’ll admit that I got a bit teary. I had no idea that kids could survive. Remember, I grew up when the survival rate was about 20%.

That’s why I’m supporting Jennifer’s charity auction.

Chris - Thank you again for doing this. I am so pleased and impressed with the generosity of your time, and the same goes for the others who are involved. Team in Training is an amazing organization for which I raised money before, and I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society can have on a patient or a family. And, quite honestly, the majority of the feedback we’d get from honorees that we’d meet is, “It’s just so moving that people even want to help.” I’m glad that you do. I met some amazing people in 2006 - two of whom have since died; one of them a 3-year-old boy. I’m participating in their honor. Thank you again for your help.

I for one, am watching this auction! Before you know it, I’ll be bombarding you with questions about feedburner and other web mysteries in person! AND for a good cause. :)

Great idea!!

That’s a great cause, but also a great way to present it. Unlike many posts, even on otherwise unrelated blogs, it doesn’t just say “charity event” and put me off. I was genuinely interested to find out about the background, the unique social media aspect of this appeal, and find out more about the individuals and the cause behind it.

Imaginative and worthy, and well worth getting involved in. Best of luck to all involved.

[…] Talk about timing. As I was writing this post, up on Twitter pops this tweet from @ChrisBrogan : “Is anyone really *passionate* about operations and details?” Chris Brogan […]

There are few things as valuable as time, and donating this precious commodity is admirable. Kudos to you all.

Now to business. I have a non-profit budget of possibly $102 CAD, could everyone please leave me Aaron Strout for $100? I’d throw in a free PEI vacation, and all the cold beer and fresh lobster you all can consume as a side bribe for compliance.

Thanks :)

I want to go to PEI. : )
