How’s that for a controversial idea? But I got the idea based on myself. I like movies. I love to watch them. So when faced with a chance to go sit in the living room and watch something that came in from Netflix, or just slip it in the Mac Mini, I threw it in my computer, and I glanced at the movie occasionally while researching something for work.
Now, I worked a lot slower with the DVD playing than not, but given that I was considering getting up, leaving the computer, and sitting on the couch to watch the movie, could you argue that I was even more productive because I split my attention between some work to do and watching part of a movie?
It’s a question of sums. If I have 4 total hours available to me, and I *should* be doing work, I can guarantee to lose 2 hours by watching the movie on the couch. However, if I watch the movie on the computer’s DVD player while doing work, it might take me longer to complete my task than if I were focusing solely on the task at hand.
It’s a slacker time hack, and if you did this method ALL the time, you wouldn’t be doing anyone a favor, but give it some thought. Are there things you’re doing as discrete events that might not be better served by doubling up a bit?
Take driving to work. It’s the best time to learn new things by listening to an informative podcast about your industry of choice, or to listen to lectures made available by leading colleges (did I mention this is college education for FREE?). Or maybe you want to take books on CD out of the library. Whatever the case, make your commute a double-up moment.
