Connect Five – Summer of Projects

Our next effort for the Summer of Projects will be this: connect new readers / viewers / listeners to APPROPRIATE new media properties. You have five days (Monday – Friday coming up) to get five people interested in a blog, podcast, videoblog (whatever) appropriate to their tastes. Here’s the basics:

  • First, try out some blogs / Internet TV / podcasts with your target, and see which they like.

  • Next, show them the media you want them to see right at the primary source.
  • Then, see if they agree and like it. Ask if they want to get the next installment.
  • If so, show them the appropriate software to SUBSCRIBE to the media.
  • Next, ask them if they can think of people who might ALSO like it.
  • Rinse and repeat four more times.

If you are sharing a blog, give them the appropriate RSS reader of choice. If you’re doing an audio podcast, give them a good piece of software to help them subscribe. If it’s a videoblog or Internet TV show, point them to a good player and perhaps an aggregation service.

FINALLY, show them how to find more on their own.

That’s it. That’s the project. Can you do it? Do you have five people in mind? What will you recommend?

Heck, this should be a weekly ritual. The only way to get new listeners/viewers… is to get new listeners/viewers.

Do the heavy lifting for audience members in advance – memorize and learn how to subscribe someone quickly to Google Reader and iTunes, which are my two gold standards for new media consumption. If you’re working with someone who doesn’t own a portable media player and/or has limited disk space, Google Reader is the best choice. If you’re working with someone who has an iPod or has disk space to spare, iTunes is definitely the way to go.

If I can, one of my five “people” will be you, Chris’s readers and bloggers yourselves. The blog, Worldwide Lexicon ,I want to introduce is focused on blogging tools supporting multilingual translations for your blogs.

If you are interested in reaching a larger, multilingual, audience or if you are trying to break down walls that prevent communication across people their tools could be of use to you. Worldwide Lexicon currently has a WordPress Plug In and is currently working on a MoveableType (and Drupal ) plug in. In addition the have tools to work on sites running various scripting languages like php and ruby.

Awesome. I live on the border and have thought about going bilingual, except that it takes twice as long to post. I have to write a post and then rewrite it in Spanish if I want to reach that audience. I’ll give that plug in a try.

Chris I’ve changed your focus just a tad since I’m on an anti-email kick and really want to bring my contact list kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

So I’ve introduced some people to facebook, billing it as a way to keep in touch with & update any number of people about what they’re doing without writing – and reading – those piles of email. It doesn’t sound geeky to them and it’s not intimidating.

My intent is to let them experience how different forms of connecting could benefit them, and even be fun. Next I’ll approach blogs, twitter, all the rest. But only after showing them a good time in a casual way. So far, so good.

You know what else would be cool? Make an OPML file of your 5 favorite podcasts and when you’re demonstrating podcasting, just have it on hand on a flash drive or something so you can drop it into their iTunes/podcatcher and have them start with 5 great shows.
