I am sitting in a hotel room getting ready to write something about the importance of new media, social media, citizen journalism (flavors of the same elephant), when I watch Steve Garfield’s coverage of Deval Patrick, a candidate for Governor of Massachusetts, answer a criticism from an opponent. (Sorry Steve, I can’t figure out how to direct link with that Grazr page interface).
Just listen to the crowd ramp up. Listen to how he moves people. It’s not that I’m certain that this man will be the best candidate, but I can say that Steve Garfield’s footage of him made me feel very energized and inspired. That might just be enough. Nothing flashy, you know. It’s just a sidelong shot, with not much variation (flashes of snapshots of the audience, etc), so it’s not in the production values per se. It’s just being there, shooting, and posting what you see.
This is Steve Garfield’s masterful lesson to countless thousands at most events where he’s asked to speak, and probably hundreds of occurrences where Steve isn’t. If I were running for office, I’d hire Steve. If Deval Patrick is smart (and I know he’s Harvard educated and carries himself well), he should consider paying Steve to cover a few more events and assembling a campaign videoblog.
But for you, swing over to SteveGarfield.com and check out Deval Patrick’s “Just Words” speech. I promise you’ll feel the energy if you give it your attention.
