Five Things Meme- It Never Gets Old

November 16, 2008 · Comments

Dominic My Twitter friend, Dominick Evans tagged me in this post, which is a “5 things” meme. Essentially: tell people five things about you they may not know. I haven’t really been responding to tag games like this (just don’t have the time), but I wanted to respond to Dominick. Why? Because he’s been very active in engaging me back and forth on Twitter, and because Dominick is really putting his heart into understanding social media. And if you didn’t even bother reading the post, I’d recommend instead checking out Dominick’s blog and following him on Twitter.

The real goal of 5 Things blog posts is to help people find new connections. With that in mind, here’s a new 5 Things You Might Not Know About Me (the sales edition):

  1. I’ve been a superhero fan since five years of age. My grandfather, a candy salesman, used to take me along on his beat to meet customers. He was the easygoing kind of salesman. He never pushed, and always made more than his quota. I improved my reading skills at an early age poring over Batman, Spider-Man, and a lot of other comics. I still pick up the occasional comic book. Batman is my favorite, though I don’t read him regularly.
  2. I tried selling cars. I lasted exactly one week. I couldn’t handle the whole fake “ask the manager” thing, and the “sell them the most car you can, even if they can’t afford it” thing. I was 18, and could’ve cared less.
  3. I tried selling water purification systems. I lasted exactly two weeks. I had this huge book with a script in it, and I had to read directly from the book, so I’d go to people’s houses who’d answered some phone call, and I’d sit on their table, and read to them about water systems, and neither of us were all that interested in being there. All three places I was sent smelled a bit like pee.
  4. The last five cars I’ve purchased are Saturns. The reason? There’s no negotiation. The price is the price. I go in there, find the car I want, and buy it. Why don’t other car companies adopt this? Not sure, but I’m pretty happy with Saturn. Their sales folks are more like helpers than wheeler-dealers.
  5. I can sell the heck out of books. I’m an avid reader, and I can talk passionately about books, even if I’ve never read a certain title. I usually know about the reviews, the space where it competes, and about the buyer. For several holiday seasons, I used to sell in a little independent bookstore in northern Massachusetts, and was paid only in books for my work.

That’s how meme games work. You come up with an idea, share your payload, and then pass it on. Here’s where I’m supposed to pass it on and spread the love with others, and then they’ll write a post, that has a link to mine, and etc, etc.

Instead of passing on that I tagged you, how about giving all the love to Dominick instead?

Tags go to: Jon Swanson, Becky McCray, Britt Raybould, Megin, and Glenda Watson Hyatt. Remember, pass on the love to Dominick. : )

  • The book job sounds like a lot of fun, the water purification and car jobs sound like hell. I can see how that kind of background encouraged you to get into what you're doing today, which is obviously something you love.

As far as the superheros go, I've included a link to Helperman - a real life superhero :) Enjoy!
  • I had a Saturn. It was a lemon. I'm letting everyone know.
  • Comics rock. They helped my reading skills for sure. I suck at selling things in general but I'm good at selling on things I'm passionate about. Probably like you it's not about the selling, it's about sharing the passion.

Making me want to do another 5 things. :)
  • I'm overwhelmed by your kind words for me Chris. I didn't know if you played the tag meme game, but I had hoped since you are such an interesting and amazing person that you'd share some cool facts about you.

I'm also a bit overwhelmed at all the new people I'm meeting. If I'm slow to respond everyone, please know it's not intentional. I'm not being rude on purpose!

Your grandpa is so cool Chris. My grandpas worked on the railroad and the other was a mailman. My grandfather (the mailman) is now 90 years old. He tells the best stories ever about growing up in the 1920s and 30s. I can imagine how much fun you had with your Grandpa.

Also, Batman is my favorite, too! How do you feel about the Batman movies that have been made?

I never sold anything, but I did once work at a survey center. I didn't want to be on the beer surveys because they were unsolicited, but for some darn reason, I always had the most (or one of the top #) survey completions every night. So, they kept putting me on beer survey. The job lasted from May of my senior year until I left for college in September. Then I went back to work there the next summer, but by then, I was sick of beer!
  • Your grandfather was a candy salesman???? That might make him the coolest Grandpa EVER.

Dominick is an awesome guy, he and I just started chatting on Twitter recently. He's smart too - this is a really great way to get to know a bunch of new people at once, and to find out some little known facts about others you already do know.

I've been tagged by @barbchamberlain, so I'm off to start my list - problem is, I'm a pretty open book, I'm trying to think of some things that people don't already know (I mean, the stuff I can actually say in public :-)

    Now...who to tag....who to tag....
  • Hmm... got me into thinking. Never thought that could be useful. Thought those guys who were doing this were just sending out spam. Thanks for the idea. =)
  • See... I had no idea about your indie bookstore connection (how did I not know that?) What store did you work at?

You're welcome to do a guest post on Books on the Nightstand anytime!
  • Thanks for the inspiration. The mention of sales jobs you didn't like got me going too, so I'm tagging others I read and passing along the fun.

    @BarbChamberlain
  • I'm with you in that I don't usually go along with the meme or tag thing, Chris, but then I would never have got to know about Dominick (who is now on my "next stop" list). :)

So just goes to show these things DO work!

Funny, I worked at a car showroom for approximately 3 weeks - while it was nice to have a different car to drive home each day, it was less than fun to be a hero one day because I sold a unit, when the next day my parentage was being questioned for selling nothing.

The plus point is that it gave me a great grounding on how NOT to treat my employees. So, again, silver lining - funny how things work out. :)
  • Thanks for the intro to Dominick. It's interesting to see the patterns of sales experiences in your early days, and sense how you were shaped by them. I spent a few years in newspaper circulation. Perhaps that why I'm so jazzed up on feeds...
