What Flossing Taught Me About Success

Flossing Is More Interesting Than You Know

I think a little too often about flossing my teeth. It’s a really unfun thing to do. No one gives you a medal for doing it. People rarely talk about it (for good reason). And yet, it’s an interesting way to think about success.

When you floss your teeth, it’s something you do for a few minutes a day that keeps your teeth clean and your gums strong. If you do it every day for two months and then stop doing it for a few weeks, your gums will grow weaker and there will be stuff all caught in there, and the overall health of your mouth will all get worse rather quickly.

What does this have to do with success?

Success Is a Daily Practice and Is Rarely Sexy Unto Itself

Success, near as I can tell, comes from daily effort. I write daily (be it for this blog or for my new book with Julien Smith, for articles for Entrepreneur Magazine or Success magazine, or for other projects like my blog topics newsletter. Writing has become a practice. The more I do it, the better I get. It’s not always sexy, and it’s not always fun, but it’s what I do to accomplish some of my goals.

Success in health is the same way. Jacqueline and I are doing the 30 Days of Paleo (affiliate link) project, and that requires eating right for every meal (I fudged just a bit around Thanksgiving, I’ll admit). If I worked on eating right “most” of the time, that would deteriorate into “some” of the time and then probably fall back into “not much at all.”

The Opposite Of Success Isn’t Failure

To me, the opposite of success isn’t failure. The opposite of success is entropy. Because we quite often lose hold of success only when we let our constant progress decay and fall apart. When I slow down on my fitness, I get flabby quickly. When I stop writing every day, it gets harder to pick it up again. When I don’t keep up with email and contacts, it falls away fast.

Entropy is the enemy. Letting things slip. Falling back into where we were before. That’s the bad guy.

Success Is the Practice

We mistake “shiny glamour” with “success” all the time. Shiny glamour is a byproduct of success. You can have a fancy car, but that usually comes from hard work (or rich loved ones – who likely worked hard at one point). You can have a great physique, but that takes work (rich people can’t help you as much with this, except to hire you trainers and personal cooks). Success is the practice part. It’s doing the work to get better and better. It’s the sweat no one sees. It’s the work of drudgery and repetition and yes, success is the practice of moving past failure, and pushing into that next opportunity for success.

Three Cheers for Practice! Three Cheers for Flossing

Flossing isn’t sexy. Running in the rain isn’t sexy. Eating more broccoli and less chocolate molten lava cake is very definitely not sexy. Practice isn’t sexy. But success is practice. Success is doing what needs doing every day. Success is the root system for all the shiny glamour you might be lucky enough to get in life. And success, my friends, is a wonderful practice in and of itself.

    I’m with you.

I get the physical training part, the eating, and the flossing. Those are all easy to do for me, but the writing is tough.  I particularly like to hear from you that the more you write, the better you get. It makes sense, and there’s no doubt entropy is the enemy of success. Keep pushing that ball a little bit more forward every day.

  • http://www.vidyasury.com Vidya Sury

:-) I am with you. By the way, did my Mom talk to you? This sounds just like her – and I love it. Yesterday I was explaining to my 14 year old son why practice is important. I think I’ll show him this post.

I am going to sttart flossing right now! Your posts seriously inspire me everytime I read them! Keep up the good work and good luck with your goals!

    success is sexy!! :)

  • http://philgerbyshak.com Phil Gerbyshak

So true Chris. I love to start new things, and then slowly drift towards entropy.

Now, I must decide what flossing is for me, and what I’m going to do about it. What are those vitally important things in my business that I know are good for me but are easy to overlook when I get busy, easy to overlook when I get bored, that are important to do every day starting right now…but that won’t pay dividends until much later on, when most people’s teeth are falling out.

Seems much smarter to invest 3 minutes in flossing instead of $3000 in dentures.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to find my floss and keep doing the maintenance right now before my teeth fall out of my head.

So true and so perfectly timed. Thanks Chris, this is EXACTLY what I needed to read this Monday morning after a busy Holiday weekend and a lot of catch-up work to do.  It won’t be any easier tomorrow, in fact there will just be more “tartar build-up” if I don’t get to it.  Thanks for the motivation :-)

I love to floss and I think there’s an analogy there as well.  You must enjoy…at least a little bit…the ‘habits’ that are key to your success…or sooner or later you will let them go.  So…best if you have some back up habits…like brushing a few times a day…so that you don’t  need to be perfect in order to achieve success.

Thank you for this great analogy. It’s simple and yet so true.
It goes along the lines of you are what you do!
Good luck with the paleo diet.

Absolutely true Chris – I’ve long held to the premise that if success were easy everyone would be doing it and this is an area that trips up a lot of people. As Jim Rohn said, success is “a few disciplines practiced every day”.

  • http://www.enmast.com/ Brad Farris

I personally hate to floss, but I love the lesson behind this. Jim Collin’s flywheel principle comes to mind for me. The longer you keep pushing things in a certain direction the more momentum you develop. Soon you are unstoppable!

  • Cronan

    Great post. Thanks for this!

Love Love Love this!  Thanks for flossing Chris :)

  • Natasha

I actually think the regular sweating, flossing and eating broccoli type activities become sexy after you make them all part of your daily life!  Why? Because when I do all these things and I get a resulting good feeling, I feel sexier!  Then with time, I start to equate doing those things with sexiness.  And by the way, I really love broccoli!  And being successful!

  • http://mattreport.com Matt Medeiros

    Practice makes perfect!

  • Sarah O’Leary

Love this. I’ve been away on another project for weeks and entropy has taken over my business ventures. But all it will take is a few days of practice to get back in the saddle again. Perfect!
I actually kind of enjoy flossing now that it’s a habit. Too bad it takes a little more than two minutes of writing a day to keep that muscle in shape!

this also makes me think to add a note on how it is that my kids floss every day – and enjoy it – even tho their mom is not exactly the most organized/diligent mom on earth.

we’ve made it fun and easier. we use those little plastic curved thingies – which they’ve nicknamed “toothpokes” – and they practice counting and see who can get done first. i don’t have to remind or nag them, it’s just a fun thing we do together every night.flossing by hand is really difficult, especially for little hands. cut yourself some slack in your practices, remove every obstacle you can.(and before you start hating me for the non-eco-ness of those picks, we wash & reuse them and get quite a lot of wear out of them!)

    Chris,

We were talking about this same concept in my sales meeting this morning.  No one likes doing all the little things that lead to success… They are frustrating and boring and monotonous… But Success is Sexy…

So if you want Success you have to take the day-to-day steps to get there… Like your “Overnight Success” series…

    Great stuff.

    Ryan H.

Funny you should talk about flossing. For years, I was really bad about it and during my dental visit in May or June, the dentist talked about how bad things could get for me. Needless to say, I was scared straight and quickly became diligent about flossing daily (damn near). During my visit last week, the dentist remarked on the improved condition of my gums.

I need to get my act together about getting back to the gym.

    Chris – I’m with you.

Running in the rain isn’t sexy – but doing it can get you (and all of us) TO sexy.  Eating right definitely isn’t sexy – but doing it can get us to sexy.

Nice article – helped me out today – Thanks!

Such a great analogy! Success is a journey, not a destination, and any journey is made up of consistent steps toward progress.

This reminded me why 80/20 on Paleo actually doesn’t work.  Your either in all the way or your not.

Excellent example. I think I will share this with my kids tonight.

  • Tumbleweed Analytics

Chris, wise advice. It’s this type of approach – doing the non-sexy, grunt work – by which I have been trying to build by own blog. Having clean, healthy teeth requires a lot of work – as does having a blog that is current and relevant to people. Well said.

  • http://twitter.com/BigHeadAsian Justin Moore-Brown

Great post Chris.  Entropy really is the enemy here. I’ve often heard that little voice saying “just this once” and have had to work at silencing that voice.

Thanks for reminding us all about the necessity of the grind.

  • Elizabeth Gaucher

SO with you.  I keep 3 different types of floss in my bathroom, so you are preaching to the choir, but preach on!!

  • Marcnate

First it’s awkward, then it’s mechanical, then it’s natural.

I am going to floss right this minute.

  • Alison Cassin

So true. If I skip”flossing” one time, I lose the motivation to do it again and gradually forget to floss (or practice) altogether. Will definitely keep this analogy in mind!

  • http://raodentistry.wordpress.com/ Ritu Rao

Chris, you are speaking my language. In life, as in flossing, daily effort equals success.

I also happen to be a dentist, so I agree on both counts :))

  • http://my168project.co Matches Malone

Whomever is not against you, is for you. I’m paraphrasing Luke 9:50 here, I think….

  • Ashley

    I’m TOTALLY with you!

  • http://twitter.com/RizzoTees Chris Reimer

I am not with you. I hate flossing my teeth. I’m just really bad at it. I let the dentist do it twice a year for me, and I use an electric toothbrush. That really keeps my teeth in shape.
As far as practice, I am indeed with you on that.

  • http://twitter.com/aphrodaisy aphrodaisy™

i’m 100% with you. the secret to success isn’t what you do a lot of in one day, but what you do consistently all the time. i love your blogs!! keep up the good work.

  • http://readwriteweb.com Marshall Kirkpatrick

I have made a new rule for myself over the past few months: when hands are free — floss!  It has improved my quality of life substantially.  Can’t say what it will do for my career, but it’s been good in and of itself, already ;)

  • http://amdwebservices.com/ Adam Dukes

    Great post!

Funny I made up a spreadsheet back in September for my daily tasks I need to do and flossing is one of them. I get upset with myself if I miss a day and it really motivates me to keep my “streak” of consecutive days. Lifting, eating right and being a better person are all the list of “daily tasks” and it really does work.

  • http://juliaaspinwall.com Julia Aspinwall

Removing the self-imposed barrier of “I don’t feel like flossing tonight because I just want to go to bed” worked wonders for my flossing diligence.  Now I floss in the morning before I brush.  I know, I know.  It’s better to do it at night before bed.  But is it better to do it faithfully everyday in a less than perfect way, or not to do it at all?  My dentist and I think the former (she thinks my teeth and gums are in great shape).

And so in our daily habits….better to do it faithfully everyday in a less than perfect way, than not to do it at all.  Now to take my own advice and get imperfectly faithful about some things!

My dentist once told me “only floss the teeth you want to keep.”  That got my attention…

  • http://newageentrep.wordpress.com/ Jervis Salvador

You seized my focus with the “floss” :)

When I started aiming for my goals, reality had set-in that constant effort or “practice” is required to nail it. And it is not easy and it is unsexy. But the results are rewarding.. and sexy!

What i have learned about success is that it is the on going process which never ends till the life. As whichever winning we get through the life is not the complete success but it is just the one kind of satisfaction of the thing that we have make the life something meaningful and achieve something in the life and not live as the ordinary person. Anyway thanks for sharing this topic and info with us. Enjoyed this topic discussion.

    Love this post.

I finished my dissertation by dedicating at least 30 minutes per day every day.  I started doing 20 minutes of cardio a day (who can argue with 20 minutes??) and now do 45.

I provide my coaching clients with daily exercises.

Thanks for reminding me that the practice works for blogging.  Goodbye entropy!
