For the Audio Podcaster

I recently received an Edirol R-09 WAVE/MP3 recorder as a gift. Before owning one, I’d thought they were a little flimsy feeling, looked a little too space-shippy, and I was supporting the M-Audio Microtrack 24/96.

Having played with it this morning, I will tell you this: it’s SUPER easy to operate, pretty easy to configure, and has a really good pair of built in microphones. It’s a little sensitive to being held (sound picks up well). My friend, Geo, gave me the idea of using a soft cloth bag and letting the recorder hang from that. There’s probably something Chris Penn can suggest that would equally dampen the sound.

I am really digging it. I found it for $399 at Amazon, but you might find a better price elsewhere. If you want to see it, click the Amazon links. Take a look for yourself. If you’re into audio podcasting and get some cash for the holidays (maybe from returning those shavers that hum, buzz, and spit water), consider one of these for your burgeoning audio podcasting career.

I’ll second the endorsement on this gadget.

At church, we’ve been looking for a way to move sermon audio from cassettes online that didn’t involve a dedicated machine for recording. Being young(ish) and dumb, I got tagged with the job.

After an exhaustive search, I broke down and headed off to the local music store (Caruso’s in New London, CT, if anyone’s interested) and talked to the experts. They recommended this one, too, and offered it at the same price.

Picked up a RCA to 3.5 mm converter for the line-in jack, and plugged it into the place the cassette recorder used to live. Dropped in a new 2Gig card, and was able to get CD quality WAV files without any trouble – the audio quality is great, and using SD Cards makes memory and storage cheap, cheap.

We went with the Eridol ’cause there’s ideas of using it to capture conferences and bible study, and if I’d been on the ball, we could have gotten audio of the Christmas Pagent – ‘cept maybe 20 kids singing off key ….

Now, all I need to figure out is exactly HOW to make Audacity sing, and life is good.
