Forget Beyonce- Here Are the Stars

So, I’m not a fan of Single Ladies by Beyonce, but someone in my house asked me to watch it with her (again). I’ve had this song stuck in my head for three days straight since the last time (now blended with Eminem’s “Without Me,” so think about that for a moment). But I digress.

Beyonce is swell. Her video is interesting. These two ladies do it all in one take:

You don’t have to like the song. Just realize that these two ran with this. These two did it all in one take. These two bring more passion to the video than any producer could have made.

Wow you’re right they did seem like they were having a lot more fun in this video. Almost made me actually like the song this time. Could feel their passion and in my eyes its the passion that matters.

I’m not a fan of Beyonce either but they do have the choreography down pretty good.

For the marketing connection — it’s the “how” part I get stuck on. In higher ed we’re more service-oriented than product-based. When alumni have a great experience, the rave is created on their own. But when we want to try to help along the rave – how do we do that without it seeming contrived, lame, impersonal, etc.? It’s hard to build excitement around our product/service/brand, especially without something like strong division 1 sports for fans to rally around.

Put it in the hands of the fans and see the passion shine through! Bravo!
This totally reminds me of David Meerman Scott, the author of the World Wide Rave and one of his new marketing rules: Lose Control!

reminds me of the old aerobic exercise videos (think Jane Fonda) only with high heels on!

Those girls rocked it! Of course, they are from North Carolina – where the girls all know how to rock it.

One take? That’s what’s got me shaking my head. There are people out there doing podcasts that require dozens of takes and these women rocked the house in one clean shot.

    Love it.

I actually like the song and addition of leggings in the new version.

Let me guess, someone in your house thinks the girls in Beyonce’s original look more like Barbie.

Shouldn’t that be “Make someone else’s products yours”? Since they’re taking another person’s product and offering their spin on it?

Go girls from Carolina! They’ve got spirit. They’ve got spunk. The dancing duo put it together with varied moves. Great choreography. I bet they practiced hours and hours and hours to get it right. Bravo!

That was pretty good, its great when there is something out there for everyone to put themselves into and make an instant community out of it.That dance is hot stuff and theres tons of contests and videos on that one, i think i saw one on Ellen a while back too. It’s actually a very exceptional talent that put it together. Music can do that like very few industries can.

    Chris,
Great post. If enough marketers made stuff that people wanted to claim as their own, we’d have a lot more great stuff out there. It made me think of why giving the Queen of England an iPod was such a brilliant idea. (aside from its symbolism of American innovation that changes the world). Out of all the millions of iPods that are floating out there in the world, no two are the same. And each and every one of them is “my iPod” to somebody. That’s a passion brand. And I’ll bet you the queen likes hers!

Chris: While this is not your point at all – it’s very timely for me because yesterday my house full of boys were searching all the copycat youtube videos for Beyonce’s Single Ladies. One of my favorites though is this one – the “heavy” guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61ObmtD8LPE

The original skit on SNL with Justin Timberlake is one of the funniest, but they’ve taken it off of YouTube b/c of copyright reasons. This one gives parts though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFmwnrryIKI&feature=related

I still have that house full of boys so I’m going to share it with them and hear what they have to say . . Thanks for the rather lighthearted post this am.

Kinda like what Mac has done with their stuff (laptop, iPhone, iPod). There is a definite cult like movement of thousands who ‘own’ their Mac product.

Thanks for posting this, Chris. Loved the attitude, espec. in last 5 secs when they break character and strut off – as they DESERVE to do! Brava for their performance!
Yep, if I could get my clients to ‘imitate/flatter’ me like this, I’d be doing cartwheels! Thanks for the inspiration — I’m setting this as a business goal!
