Free Tips for Your Blog

April 9, 2008

Yesterday was my birthday. Today, I’m giving you a little gift in the form of a free PDF to download: Building Community Around Your Blog. Feel free to send copies to anyone you like.

Some of you might be practicing this stuff already, but maybe there are one or two tips that will be useful.

I wrote this up originally for my new friend, Nina Simonds from Spices of Life, a video show my friend, Steve Garfield helps produce. We were talking about ways to further develop community and build audience.

What else? How are you building community around YOUR blog?

Hey Chris,

Awesome PDF. Some of these things I’ve heard of before, and yet for some reason they resonate a bit more now, just because I’m finally getting my head in this space, and starting to understand a lot more about this.

At least I’m fullfilling one of those ideas about commenting right now. LOL

Thanks again, I appreciate it.

A present? For me? And its not even my birthday?

Now I feel guilty that I didn’t get you anything for yours…

There’s always next year!

I like the idea of interviewing important people in the field. I find that people often get to my blog by searching for the name of someone I have mentioned.

Excellent tips Chris. In addition to your very thoughtful listed points, I like to use a few more ways to build and promote my blog’s community. The most important aspect, I think, would be engaging your readers through your writing. Your writing has to resonate and provoke thoughts to your readers. This will make your blog valuable. If in adition you also write clearly and in a friendly manner, you’ll soon be able to develop a following, upon which you can develop a community.

Thanks Chris. This will come in handy Friday when I present a session for Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives http://vachamber.org/general.asp?id=102 at their 2008 Institute. I’ll be sure to give you credit and pass along your links.

Pitch your blog to specific members of the media who cover your market space. Offer your content and your expertise. Be available to for interviews. It’s a great way to ratchet up your exposure and gain media coverage about your blog.

I just started a blog site…and I honestly had know clue what to with it. In fact its not even really named yet. So I decided to do a little research on what others have done. In doing so, I have had the joy of running across this page. Thank you for your insight. I will be putting it to use, and most likely I will come back for more inspiration.

Thanks Chris. It’s nice to see this kind of thing laid out nice and neat. I really appreciate it.

Chris,

This article is great! Straight to the point ‘no mucking around’ stuff. As Steve says, some of the stuff I have heard of before but there’s nothing quite like a little article that reminds you to get back to basics.

Awesome stuff.

cheers,
Armand

I love the list thus far…it’s a great crash-course in community building.

A couple of blogs I visited did something pretty neat to let me know that they were following up with me on their comment. When I received this introduction, I didn’t feel invaded on, it actually felt pretty neat.

Here’s what they did, after I commented, they sent me an email to 1.) welcome me to their blog, 2.) let me know that they wrote a follow up comment. But mind you, that’s all it takes, one email the first time.

(Just a neat tip I thought I’d share).

Hi Chris,

Those are useful tips. I think one must just blog from the heart. I found for me that if i was trying to be authoritive I developed all sorts of hang ups about my writing etc. And after reading what I wrote it looked like it came from a teacher rather than me.

So the thing is to allow your personality to shine through.

Thanks for the gift. Trying to use
all the ingredients at once is frustrating.

Hey Chris,
It’s really good PDF. Recently, I made my blog and don’t know what I have to do for promoting my blog. It helps a lot.
Thanks.
