Give Your Speech Change the World – Video Book Review

My friend, Tim Sanders sent me this book by Nick Morgan, Give Your Speech, Change the World: How to Move Your Audience to Action (amazon affiliate link). I admit that as a pro speaker, I wasn’t sure what I’d take from it. Well, I took tons from it, and you might, too, either as a beginner or someone with some speeches under your belt. Here’s a quick video review:

Anyhow, it’s a keeper. Thanks Nick, and thanks Tim.

People always ask which camera I used to shoot my video. I use the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (that’s a review of the camera).

It is always heartening to hear and see such things. Knowledge is power, and so many in this world are denied it. Empowering our fellow humans is undoubtedly the best and most lasting way in which we can change our world. That said, I'm certainly looking forward to getting to read your thoughts on the goings-on in this screwy country called America again.

Hi Chris! It's true, no matter how many times you speak in public or how good you think you are….you can always be better. I like that Nick is so passionate, enough to tell us to walk up to the microphone to change the world. If you think that way…I believe it shows (not only in your words but also in your body language) and people will get excited by what you say. I also had to laugh out loud about the cover! It's horrible…In general, I think most publishers could up their game in the art department. Thanks for the review. I will consider this book to help me with my speaking engagements.

I've been looking for resources to help me become a better speaker, so I'm glad you recommended this book. Being a better speaker is beneficial for all of us, even those who aren't public speakers for a living. Knowing how to hit the right notes helps in the office place too. Thanks for the review.

Great post and SO true. I read recently that in the 60's our average attention span was 42 seconds. Today it is less than 5 seconds! (Aparently). That's not a lot of time to give you world changing pitch to someone. The future belongs to those who communicate the fastest.

Thanks Chris. As you and I discussed in Milwaukee, I know this is a professional part of me that I must begin to address Thanks for your encouragement then and thanks for sharing this resource now, it's on the way!

There was a land always plagued with fires. The villagers asked for help. A stranger gave a speech on how to solve the problem, but he spoke in another language. We save the world when we give speeches that touch the hearts of those who are listening. This requires sincerity of purpose for the making a difference. When this is the motive, the speaker needs no lessons on how to be effective – he speaks the listeners language.

Great review… I just ordered two copies for me and @bsimi : ) I love the idea that anytime your are standing up in front of people that your goal should be to change the world!

Never judge a book by it's cover. We'll go off your recommendation…

Good stuff, Chris. As a presenter, I'm always looking to improve and deliver more to the audience. I'm buying a copy today. Oh, and I couldn't agree more, it is a dreadful cover.

    Hi Chris,
Great video and as someone who is a regular speaker it is a book that I am adding to my list.

Having not read the book yet, changing the whole world when you get up to speak could sound daunting to some poeple. One of the things that I try and do whenever I get up and speak is to aim to get someone, just one person, to do something different. If I can do that then, perhaps, like the butterfly effect in chaos theory I could end up changing the world.

    Adrian

The path of constant and never-ending improvement is fun. This book is a great addition and find, made even better by your video review. Learning about speaking – a lifelong habit – is similar to learning about learning – another lifelong habit. Because we've been speaking [and learning] for forever, to learn about it as a grown-up seems non-sensical. You and your book recommendation show, it isn't non-sensical, in fact, in makes tons of sense.
    Cheers,
    Beat

I've come across Nick's book from last year before and wanted to read (but haven't reached it on my reading list) on creating authenticity and charisma in your speaches. This “Change The World”-book (from 2005) sounds really good too, and now that it has been confirmed that he's got something to add there's no excuse.

Thanks. Enjoy these 2 min book reviews.

When watching your KTT, I thought that you might want to start a club. Brogan's Book Club, not unilike Oprah's Book Club. Do you have one? OMG I just clicked over to Tim Sander's site and he said this about you: “making him a mini-Oprah of sorts!” I have always felt that reaching a comfort level with public speaking is a very powerful tool, and usually very marketable. It can start out, like it did for me, in high school, running for office. From there you take it to your profession, I was in training and development for a number of years. It was a by-product of being a bank officer and training one person to running large week long training seminars. But then in our every day lives, there comes a time when you look around and you are the one chosen to do a eulogy. Find your comfort level, enjoy the interaction, care about people and be able to laugh at yourself. I will read this book and I thank you for the suggestion.

    Hey Chris,

Thanks a ton for this review. As I pick up more speaking gigs, I learn more about how much I don't know. Glad you mad fun of the cover, because I'm guilty of judging books by their covers. Love the idea of a story telling bridge, and to change the world every time we speak… That's huge. I'll have to check it out!

There is no fundamental right to survive.” -Skip Prichard. This has never been a more timely statement than now. Whether you are a publisher, small business owner, or just a worker bee, times are changing. You better find out who your customers are and what they need. You need to turn your mirrors into windows by taking the focus off of yourself and put it squarely on your customer. Then start a conversation… an engaging conversation to find out what your customers truly want and come up with novel and exciting ways of fulfilling those needs.
