Happy Birthday to the Littlest Pirate

January 22, 2009 · Comments

Harold My son, Harold, turns 3 today. He is a vibrant, funny boy, who loves to imitate animals, who has a budding sense of humor (a lot of it quirky and hard to follow), and who thinks putting together 50 piece puzzles and reading Thomas books with me is a great day.

I wish he’d eat more vegetables. His older sister grew up eating green. My boy? Beige. But hey, we get what we get.

Harold is his own man, patient, always stuck on happy, and a real charmer. He is rarely cranky, and he gives me a lot of reasons to keep moving forward.

Happy birthday, mister Harold.

  • Happy Birthday! I hope he had a great one!
  • Happy Birthday Harold!!!
I love your hat, it rocks :)
  • Isn't it wonderful? In their words, at the age of three, every day like that becomes "the best day I ever had" and it happens over and over. The time is so precious and how great is it that you have the blogosphere to share the experiences to put smiles on all of our faces.

My son is 8 and it seems like just yesterday I took him home when he weighed just five pounds.

    Happy Birthday~
  • Chris,

I can't believe it. It seems like just a month or two ago when he turned 2—I remember that post so well!

(Then again, mine's about to turn 10 and it seems like a month or two ago when she turned 2.)

Happy Birthday, Harold. You're growing up so fast. Keep doing those puzzles!

    Regards,

    Kelly

Chris, congrats- 3 is a great age, though 3 through 12 are all good... my kids, 15, 19, 21, are much more complicated - - and they wont wear pirate hats!

I did really like your line, "we get what we get" arond your son's affinity for beige food! It's similar to "it is what it is".... but is this really true? Do we just get what we get and have to accept it and deal with it as best we can?
  • so cute. my girl, who demanded a skull & crossbones themed party (no!mama! not pirates. ARRRGHS) loves the hat.

from whence did it come? (types the mama as toddler yells I LIKE DAT! I LIKE DAT!!)
  • Happy Birthday and all the best to the Brogan family. Cherish the days that they are toddlers since they grow real quick and before you know it adults. These are some really great years. Enjoy !!
  • Happy Birthday and Congrats to the whole family!
  • Your kid is adorable. We have a lot in common since I like to imitate animals as well. Unfortunately it's less socially acceptable when you are in your mid twenties. Anyway I have been reading your blog awhile and enjoy it. Just wanted to let you know.

Happy Belated Birthday Harold - hope you had a really great day.

Chris, this is why I love your blog. You are smart and you have a very warm heart. My "little man" is 18 and a freshman away at college. I remember his 3rd birthday because it had a Thomas theme. I miss him horribly and wish we could curl up with a good Thomas book today. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Little Pirate! My daughter Megan (@MKTK) has her birthday today as well! She is 24!

    Chris,
Stretch the time as much as you can. The things you do like "Reading Thomas books" will be the things he remembers. At 24, our daughter's fondest memories are reading Stuart Little by the fire, not necessarily the pricey vacation or the new car.

    Savor today!

Happy Birthday Harry, and another 97 healthy years to you :)

  • Happy birthday to Harold! He is so cute.
  • Happy Birthday, Harold! :D
  • Aw, cute photo. Happy Birthday, Harold! My son will be two in April. He's almost always happy, laughing and dancing and has recently started to grasp humor. I asked him if he wanted to go "nigh nigh" during the middle of the day one day. He looked around, saw it was light, and said, "yah" and smiled the biggest, goofiest smile! It was the first time he ever kidded about something. So cute.

    And don't worry, Harold. I'm 38 and I don't like greens, either.

  • Happy Birthday, Harold! My daughter turns 3 in March. Two-almost-three is a good age, I think.

And, yeah, still need to learn to eat my veggies. Luckily, my three year old takes after her mom in that department.
  • Happy birthday! I'm 40 and still barely touch vegetables and I've lived not only to tell about it but also to procreate--2 kids, both healthy and all parts attached. Get some of those gummy bear vitamins and tell him not to sweat it.

Happy Birthday Harold from Ireland... My youngest daughter still hasnt touched a green & she's 7! hasnt done her any harm. She's the only one who escaped any colds & flu here this winter! have a lovely evening.
  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAROLD!!! I hope your day is FANTABULOSO!!! I absolutely love your hat, dude! Very cool!

I've got a beige-eater over here, too, Chris. After having two docs test him for anemia for his scarily pallid features, we have put the monster on Carnation Instant Breakfast. He's a tech-obsessed cheese and bread head who doesn't often see the sun! LOL!
  • Happy birthday! Congrats Chris...mine will be here soon. The last time we chatted it seemed like it was way off, but now it's only a few more weeks!
  • happy birthday, harold! hope all your wishes come true & that your day involves a lot of CAKE!!! :)

    the allard family,
heather, scott, hope, grace, brendan & the dude (our dog)
  • It is a beautiful thing when people can enjoy life. Have fun. As my little cousin would say Happy Burffday!!!!
  • As a Mammo now and with my youngest grandchild at 7, I miss being around the 2 and 3 year olds. They are so much fun. It makes me sad remembering that age and their curiosity and how much fun it was to read to them.

Have a great birthday time with your little guy; trust me they grow up way too fast!

    Happy Birthday Harold!
  • Happy Birthday, Harold! We went for 8 years on our little man eating pizza and fries for lunch and dinner and then finally branched out to include steak, potatoes, and corn! Funny when steak, potatoes and corn makes you nearly cry :-)
  • amadis

  • Happy Birthday, little man. My son is 16 months, and has been on a vegetable near-moratorium for about 6 months. I figure he'll relent from the cheese and meat when he's ready.
