Hello from PodCamp Europe

June 12, 2007 · Comments

Hello from PodCamp Europe I’m sitting in the back of a session from “Things I wish I knew when I started podcasting,” led by Jason Jarrett. I’m laughing so hard my laptop is jiggling in my lap. He’s talking about all the things that he learned from when he started podcasting. He’s talking about all kinds of gear (God, I hope he puts up these slides) and all this stuff he’s changed from to a much more simple system.

The message so far today: Europe is an undiscovered country. There are these great islands of interesting creativity happening, but should all my new friends from here rise up together, gather, and share their power, this will be a new marketplace.

If you’re a US-based podcaster or videoblogger, there are all kinds of things you don’t know about Europe. What you *COULD* be doing is moving your stuff into a huge market of mobile audio listeners. People here use their cells to play MP3s. You have a HUGE chance at working into a new universe of people that would probably love your show.

Other Stuff I Learned

The unconference model — open-faced learning, participation, people interacting, everyone on the same stage– is the killer app. People here are shaking hands and spending time getting to know each other. They’re mixing networking with learning. They’re building all kinds of new and exciting relationships. This is where stuff is happening.

If You’re NOT Into Podcasting or New Media

You can take this model and make it work for you. Building an unconference is a formula. Get a community of people. Find a venue. Get food sponsored. Load up on free wifi. And set people loose on the notion that THEY are the organizers, THEY are the content, THEY are who matters.

Sponsors? Sure. Perfect! Exhibitors? I love the idea, because if you can get the RIGHT exhibitors, people who your unconference audience will feel an affinity and a relationship with, that’s a good thing for both folks, right?

More as I go along. I am so excited, so energized. This has been the best.

IF YOU’RE FROM SWEDEN

And you’re not here, swing by PodCamp Europe. We’re here til the 14th.

  • Not wanting to appear pedantic but Europe is so not a country, but a continent. Europe is comprised of countries.

If you said to a Swedish person and a French person that they lived in the same country you'd make no friends pretty fast.

Yes I agree with your motivation for getting people to run unconferences, anywhere, anytime, no matter what the size. I think they probably do take place in EU, certainly barcamps have started too, and geeky sessions of various names, the trick is to reach out of your own immediate circle though, and not make it too "cult-like", if I can say that.

I particularly liked my brief time with PodcampEU due to the exhibitors of VON being so close, that meant people could "reach-out", which is paramount in my mind, touch people who are not doing what you do, but could.

I imagine with time, some years, half a generation, everyone will be engaging fully with these concepts so the camps will be just taking place culturally by defualt.

Was also very good to see you again, Chris.
  • Indeed it was great to meet you as well. I wished I was there for both days. Would have been excellent. And yes, we should speak more soon.

p.s The band was super duper.
  • would LOVE info on the mobie audio market!!! My audio stuff is on Voice Indigo, but last I checked they didn't take video...slides? blog? anyone?????

and ohhhh it hurts!!!! To be in Stockholm!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, this tells me that you and I should be communicating more about this kind of stuff regarding US vs. Europe and the Middle East... I had no idea that Americans *weren't* playing mp3s on their cells. Is it just that everyone in the States can afford to have an iPod as well? Also, do you think things will change in the US with the release of the iPhone?
  • Tomer
I really wanted to fly over to Sweden for podcamp but it didn't work out... now you are just making me jelous of everyone who could make it!

    Enjoy!
