How I Use Third Tribe Marketing

I’m a co-founder of Third Tribe Marketing, a private membership site where we talk about online marketing. It’s been the best thing I’ve done in 2010 so far, and I say that because I’m really enjoying the interaction with the over 2000 members, and because I’m making money (or at least getting more effective, in some cases) thanks to the information I’m finding in the forums.

I thought I’d write about how I use it.

For Consulting

Not everyone can pay my day rate. Not everyone is the ideal client for New Marketing Labs (my company). But some folks might want to ask me a simple question or two about their business, and by signing up at Third Tribe Marketing, you pay a whopping $47 for not only my advice and insight, but whatever else you get from the other participants in the forums (who often have astounding feedback and ideas).

So, if you’ve got some questions for me that aren’t a full blown marketing project for New Marketing Labs, then Third Tribe might be the place.

For Resources

I just copy/pasted a whole bunch of informational resources from a few threads in the forums at Third Tribe Marketing for a project I plan to launch in about a month. It’s awesome for that. Oh, and the other day, I asked a question about graphics types to help with another idea I had. Tons of connections.

For Education

There are many types of internet marketers in there. We have franchise professionals, big corporate types, b2b, small shops, lots of solo businesses, and many people who are creating their own businesses based on what they’re reading. It’s a real blast listening to what they’re doing, following links to their projects, getting a chance to talk up what we can improve or not. That’s one thing I really like about Third Tribe is that the folks are really participating.

Is It For You?

I don’t really know. Nonprofits are in there. Big companies are in there. Little guys. It’s a big blend. People seem happy. We get the occasional person who leaves, saying it wasn’t what they wanted, but those were often people who weren’t really interested in marketing techniques, tips, and resources. Or maybe the ideas were good, but they couldn’t use them right away. Because you can cancel whenever, it’s not a big deal to leave after a month, if you’re not ready to execute. I mean, we’d love to have you around, but you can leave after you get a few bits of actionable advice.

I’m pretty happy with what we’ve created there. If you want to talk in depth with people about online marketing, check out Third Tribe Marketing. It’s where I’m spending a good 30-60 minutes each day, and where I’m finding ideas that turn into money (or at least value for my clients).

Well i haven't used Third tribe marketing yet as i m confused in some of its terms that how to make people trusted on you when they don't know you?So i would like to know more about how this can be applied to business to make it more effective ?

I've been wondering how I could take advantage of my 3rd Tribe membership. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm a member of Third Tribe and I've really enjoyed the interviews. I need to become more active in the forums (okay, I need to start being active), but a few tidbits from the interviews–like yours with Sonia–were worth the monthly fee alone.

I've been doing much of this stuff for years, but I love the different perspectives that each of you bring to the table.

The project is very interesting and I think I'm going to join. Can you share data about country participation? I'm particularly interested in Italy. Thanks and congrats ;)

Third Tribe is probably the best place to go and ask questions and get real responses. People are there to interact and help others without shoving their business card or even worse a contract in your face.

I enjoy the conversations on third tribe as the forums are very useful. We all learn from each other and inspire each other to do better. It is unique having people representing so many industries there and how we come together. A gardening blog may have a different target market but the writing, building, promoting, etc are still the same for any blog. I like that part as we get exposure other blogs and what has worked for other people.

I know it is not for everyone but as you said, you want a piece of advice, a chance to pick your brain a bit or just to try and get to know you better, then people should head on over there. There is a wealth of information being shared that by many people who care.

    Chris,

Third Tribe membership has been a really good thing for me, as you know. You, Sonia, heck, even Jonathan F. have been very helpful to me as I try to navigate times that are a changing.

I haven't been as active in the Third Tribe as I'd like to be because I've been off trying to implement what I've learned. Thanks for the great information and tips. I'm only scratching the surface of the potential but it has been worth it for me so far.

I'm having fun with my new blog for corporate employees: http://grootship.com

It's a repository of ideas open to anyone who wants to do a guest post and share their own ideas of how to practice good grootship.

Chris, you are the “Tom Sawyer” of social media. I mean that as a compliment. You have created a community where you have people coming to paint the fence (like in the book Tom Sawyer)…. and they want to do it! It is clear that Third Tribe is a valuable community for others, but the secret is out… YOU are learning from it too! People pay a fee to help educate YOU, too! You have certainly helped others (you directly answer many questions), but it is clear it is a laboratory where you also learn.

  • MelissaOc

I'm a third tribe member and I receive great suggestions on the forums from other tribers.

  • susangiurleo

From a learning and business- building angle, Third Tribe is the best investment in my money and time ever. As Chris says the real benefit is the forums, networking and learning from others. And where else can you get personal feedback for your business from Chris, Sonia Simone, Darren Rowse and Brian Clark (for less than $50/month)? Loving. It.

    Chris,

I have a Third Tribe Membership and I really hadn't been using it in the way I would get the most out of it! I have been thrilled to pay the monthly fee just for the Q&A sessions, talks and seminars, but you were a 100% right in advising me to go to the forums! I had been ignoring them thinking, as usual, that I may not have much to add or didn't have the time, but that was a big mistake on my part. The Third Tribe community is filled with different work types, thought types and any other type you can think of, but every type is willing to share and help! I love it. I also appreciate how you, Brian and Sonia jump in with your expertise or with a question yourselves.
Happy I jumped in and again my thanks,
    Lois

what is the need for a closed paid system when this type of resource is everywhere in the social sphere?

  • http://www.mindadventure.com/ rob white

There is nothing more powerful than an 'alliance of minds' that gather together in the name of growth and development. Your 'third tribe' is precisely that (from my perspective). This kind of master mind alliance is even spoken of in ancient text: 'two or more gathered in my name'. 'My name' (again from my perpsective), simply means in the name of something that is evolutionary!
    Good job, rob

    Hi…!

I have been following your posts for some time, and like some others mentioned in the comments here, this is a cool idea! All the best!

Btw, there's a marketing conference in NYC in mid-May – L2's Generation Next Forum. I have been contemplating attending it – but wondering if you or others on this site have had any experience with them, or heard of them? More details at the following link: http://budurl.com/PriyankaisGenY

I'm enjoying Third Tribe although I haven't used it as much as I hope to going forward. Really liked the last teleseminar (who knew Chris would be bursting into song?). Also found taking the time to read through the community bio's was inspiring (and then a bit off-putting). Need to summon the nerve to post my own…one of the things I value about Third Tribe is having a place to go to ask some of the many questions that tumble around in my head…without feeling too foolish. That's worth the price of admission right there. ;)

I've been a member of the 3rd Tribe community for over a month now and absolutely love it. Sure, you can learn a lot of the ideas in there from other places. But what you get there is a focused space with incredible interviews, helpful discussions in the forums, and feedback from people who actually care about adding value and making connections.

For example, just today, I was driving to Boston for an in-person meeting of 3rd Tribers while listening to the interview Chris did with John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing. From that one interview, I had 2 very big insights about my business that are going to change the way I speak about what we do, and also change the way we position a product we just launched to more directly target our ideal customers.

Basically, it's providing an educational and social space that is upleveling my business on many fronts.
