In One Year

I was just looking back at archive posts from April 2006, to see what was on the go back then. And I started thinking about what had transpired between then and now. Here’s a quick list, missing a bunch of things, I’m sure:

Between April 8 2006 and April 8 2007

I have…

  • Launched my first podcast, then second, third.
  • Attended BarCamp Boston
  • Met Christopher Penn, Bryan Person, Eric Skiff, Steve Garfield, C.C. Chapman, and more important people.
  • Floated the PodCamp idea
  • Befriended Rev Jon Swanson (then pastor) and others.
  • Formed Grasshopper New Media
  • Celebrated my daughter, Violette’s 4th birthday
  • Organized PodCamp
  • Participated in PodCamp
  • Met HUNDREDS of Rockstars, including Justin Kownacki (too many more)
  • Met Jeff Pulver. Got a BIG new Job.
  • Quit my job of 9.75 years; changed industries.
  • Started working on Network2 *and* the Video on the Net Conference
  • Attended Portable Media Expo
  • Met Jim Kirks and HUNDREDS more rockstars
  • Took a secret convoy of video talent to a secret location in California.
  • Launched my Small Boxes videoblog
  • Helped sponsor and attended Halloween Vlogfest met scores more rockstars
  • Met Ori Brafman who wrote Starfish and Spider
  • Attended PodCamp Pittsburgh met …yep, more rockstars
  • Attended the Vloggies… met more great people
  • Threw a Network2 brunch in San Fran
  • Threw a Network2 mixer in NYC with Jeff. (…you get it)
  • Threw back-to-back Network2 mixers in LA and SF (met…do I have to say?)
  • Celebrated my son, Harold’s first birthday
  • Traveled more in six months than I had in my entire life
  • Participated in PodCamp Toronto (met hundreds more rockstars)
  • Kicked off my first Video on the Net Conference (success!)
  • Threw another Network2 mixer for NYC
  • Participated in PodCamp NYC (few days ago).

And I’m sure there’s tons more that I’m missing because it’s late and I’m really tired. But wow. Look at all that. Kinda wild, eh?

I’ve certainly changed a lot over time, but that’s a constant with me: change. What’s next in the coming year? We shall see.

What was the change in you? Was it just a change in what you do or the way you use time? My life has changed, too, but I’m still the same, although, perhaps, more so.

I change all the time, but most of what I do in a given year is attempting to improve my capacity. My ability to focus on the things that are important, and say no to all the things that aren’t. If I do that well, I accomplish more. When I say yes to things I shouldn’t care about, that’s where things go awry.

    Does that help?

I think it’s a semantic discussion- change sometimes implies a 180 degree shift; I think its more evolutionary change here- learning, refining, altering the course when things get totallo OOC; learning to do things better.
People in general are much more confortable with stasis than with constant change and new media, I am finding out, is largely about becoming comfortable with constant change and refinement. Like sharks, if you stop moving, you can die, or so it seems. It’s not always comfortable; it’s definitely exhausting; but it’s a lot of fun too, and I think this is what keeps everyone going.
My children are watching the Magic School Bus in the background, and I think Ms Frizzle is onto something- Take Chances ! Get Dirty! Make Mistakes! Because these are keys to learning.
