Linchpin by Seth Godin – Video Book Review

Are you indispensible? That’s what Seth Godin asks in Linchpin, his new book about the future of work, the break with our industrial past, and what we need to do, individually, to measure up. It’s a Seth Godin book, so of course it delivers. It’s much more meaty than Tribes and more actionable than Meatball Sundae, and every bit as eye opening as his other books.

Hi Chris, Another point, if you look at the pretty inside cover from far away, it says “You Matter.” I thought that was neat. Linchpin is a great book of thought, your points in video well taken.

Cool. I have it on my Kindle, but have to finish another book first. Now I see what I didn't get by not buying the physical book, but I can live with that. Thanks for the review.

I agree that this is one of those books people should get and read! On Seth Godin's Squidoo site, he has started a list of linchpins, and Chris, I'm sure you already know, you are there! I was happy to be able to comment on that one that I certainly agree. Thank you for pointing out another great thing for all of us.

I thought Linchpin was a really great book. It is very thought provoking for those that want to try to keep their heads down and not be noticed. That is not the method for job security. I also recently wrote a review of it at my blog if anyone is interested – http://www.geekbookreviews.com/2010/02/linchpin

Thanks Chris for the review. This is actually the second review of this book I've read (or listened to) today. I'll take that as a sign!

Having been raised in Africa amongst scores of tribes I got that piece immediately. I was always told that if I went to school, got a good education blah, blah that I'd live happily ever after. It is so nice to find out what my intuition was telling all along was right. My only regret is I didn't listen fully and always had a little guilt about stumbling forward in my own businesses. Now I feel like I'm way ahead of the pack and it feels really good

Can't wait to read it! I've listened to a few of his live interviews – IMHO – his ideas are revolutionary.

Linchpin is, in my humble opinion, one of Seth's best books…if not the best. When I had him on my show, I saw how it really is personal to him. It is part-advice, part-real-world-experience, part-memoir.

    I love it.

I have just recently bought his previous book, 'Tribes', and look forward to reading it when I can. I was interested in reading 'Tribes' because while in college I am striving to become a leader that is looked up to and knows who to connect with to make it to the next step.

How would 'Linchpin' supplement 'Tribes' and would you say it would be a good read for college students?

I can't wait to get my grubby little entrepreneurial hands around this book :) Great review and I can just tell it is going to rock my business socks.

    If anything, they’re diametrically opposed.
Tribes is about succeeding online, i.e. thru a tight-knit community whereas
Linchpin is about succeeding in an office 9-5 environment, i.e. working for others and being ‘indispensable’ … and how you define that is anyone’s guess.
I don’t know anyone who’s indispensable, even the president of the USA.

Three cheers for back lighting. I will really the enjoy the ease and authenticity with which you do these reviews. I thought Linchpin was great and have made it one of my themes of 2010 to help find and connect with Linchpins.

    Nice review Chris,

Seth was in Utah last Friday and I'm sad I was unable to attend.

Now that I am almost finished with your book Trust Agents, I am downloading the audio book of Linchpin.

Curious, you seem to be more into physical books… do you listen to many audio books?

I have ordered Linchpin and Permission marketing, can't wait to read them both. I've been wondering about my career for a while, hopefully reading Linchpin will be helpful.

  • http://www.lifenotion.com Derek Jensen

Ivan, that helped me out a lot. I find myself more of a Tribes person then, but there are certainly many more college students that would be 'Linchpins'.

  • livjon

    My linchpin?
I don’t have one – that’s why I need the book more than anyone else, and fast!!!
If you choose me, you will be improving my life more than you than would be improving anyone else ’s!!!

    Hi Derek,

Pat Flynn over here http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/ is worth looking at in that he managed to monitize his studies into a very successful site. Something to do with architecture exams. Might be worth looking at for ideas. He's a decent bloke as well.

I've read the first bit of the book and loved it.

Almost instantly it reminded me of Tom Peter's and it's hard to compete with that guy.

Anyone looking to make sense of what's going in the world and really become indispensable at work should pick this up.

Your Linchpin book review was enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the contrasting of it to the work of Michael Gerber in The E-Myth Revisited. Like you, I am a great fan of both Gerber and Godin. I have also encouraged everyone I know to read both books. When I read Godin's comments about the systems suggestions of Gerber, I was quite concerned. I think he has failed to understand Gerber's position on managing people and how people relate to systems. Now, that is not unusual because many people attribute things to Gerber that he doesn't actually say, except occasionally in humor. Gerber does not suggest that you hire the average village idiot. What I think he says is that you want to hire average people who can be trained to run exceptional systems and who can grow to improving the systems and serving c

Writing a good post is almost like an art, and a paradox; a good post should be short, but it should also be descriptive. It should link to an intriguing page yet be appealing to a wide range of readers. You should express your opinion in the post, but not let it completely bias the post. And if you manage to do all of this, the chances are that you won’t even be thanked.
