LinkedIn Could Use Some Advice On Sharing

Look at this:

You see that LinkedIn will let me share with people within the system. What’s missing? Oh right: sharing with off-LinkedIn platforms.

But here’s the thing: if I share the stuff I like into Twitter or Facebook or my blog, then I’ll be adding LINKBACKS to LinkedIn, which will encourage traffic, enhance Google Juice, and better emulate that which made the web worth it.

By sharing only within LinkedIn, what’s that buying me?

Please don’t copy Facebook. Please share out into the wilder world. It’s more funnerer that way.

Linked in could use help with a lot of things, like transparent account settings, sharing (as you say) group notification mgmt and let's not forget the shonky UI.

Chris – This might sound odd, but I'm shocked that in 2010, folks are having issues understanding the importance of *easy* sharing. I know we are in a bit of a bubble, and I respect that, but if you have to give up your first child, enter 485848 pieces of information, search like Christopher Columbus or register to share, you aren't helping your own cause.

The KISS method seems to apply :) In fact, I rarely hear of the problem “We have to stop this! People are sharing stuff too much.”

A Q&A marketing forum I used to contribute to regularly has now put the replies behind a login. If you're not a logged-in member, you can't see the answers.

1) How the heck is someone supposed to decide if the answers are any good if they can't see them?
2) Having answers in the open encourages people to share them
3) Why should I answer a question if my answer isn't visible? Part of the point was to gain visibility and traffic (as well as helping people).

Linkedin Does have some interesting ways to share, just under the surface, but it takes a little resourcefulness because its not quite obvious how to do it.
It was great meeting and talking with you and i was happy to pass on this tip most people havent discovered about Linkedin of how to share music or video actually ON your linkedin profile.
the premise is simple enough: use the Google docs application to create a Presentation that you actually embed a YouTube video into. the Google docs allows you to resize the player with ease, making it almost just tiny enough to be only the play button or as large as the presentation window.
linkedin users who land on your profile have to click on the player and it takes time for the video to load but it works and now you can have a soundtrack or video tour with your linkedin profile.

Excellent point Chris! As Danny mentioned there is a Twitter integration, but if LinkedIn revamped their Groups in order to get more website traffic, why not open them up to the rest of the Social Web by making it easy to share your discussions with your network on other platforms? For a pioneer in social media, LinkedIn really does surprise me sometimes with what they do, or in many cases what they don't do..

Gotta disagree on that one Chris. Facebook is for silly frivolous chit chat and LinkedIn is for professional networking. Do we really want our professional contacts seeing links to Facebook and our postings about what we had for breakfast and our like lists (Shania Twain and the Beastie Boys?)?

I enjoy sharing on LinkedIn , I do this directly from Google Reader using a Custom Send To Link ( video on how to do this at http://www.linkedintoresources.com ), I was surprised that on the configureable Send To buttons there were links for Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon and all the others except LinkedIn which means a quick setting up of a custom url, but it stuck me that maybe LinkedIn and Google could do with getting their heads together on that one.

I also use Sharing to LinkedIn and then to Twitter using the #in function and then to my Facebook page using the #fb function and the Selective Tweets application.

This all works, but of course on Facebook it fails to look as good as if you post a link directly onto a page.

So on the whole I end up sharing on LinkedIn with an update to Twitter and sharing on Facebook; I guess everyone has to find their own balance.

I understand some peoples argument that open sharing is positive and easy to do when you can simultaneously feed all your Tweets etc..into one place; but the downside to all that is some peoples incredibly boring, repetitive and irrelevant feeds that are the same on all platforms; for this reader this fails to impress. I find it better, for me, to post relevant content on each platform.

Great post, Chris. Another thing I find baffling about LinkedIn is that you cannot get recommendations from people outside your connections, let alone outside of LinkedIn! This severely restricts the ability to fully develop one's profile and it is self-defeating since it doesn't bring that person doing the recommendation to the site in a non-selling atmosphere.

If you are in business then all this sharing is for what ? Its for business.
LinkedIn is a business networking platform and works well when people have to join up to take part.
Their business model is for you to join and for them to set boundaries around the network so that revenue can be created.
