Make Your Own Advisory Board

Jon Swanson Yesterday, I dropped an email to six friends asking for their advice on something I’m working on. I set out what I intended to do, my plans behind it, and my hopes rolling forward. They were wonderfully informative, challenging, and useful to what I needed. The value of a personal advisory board is more than I can express. You probably do this without thinking, but if you haven’t had the idea before, here’s what I do.

It Helps to Have Smart Friends

I’m lucky to have lots of friends with diverse jobs and experiences. I know legal experts, church pastors, software developers, entrepreneurs, artists, small business experts, musicians, actors, people from several countries, and certainly from all kinds of backgrounds. Obviously, the more successful your friends are, the better advice they can give you, so having some true winners in your circle is useful. (But then again, don’t discount people who fail successfully, as Becky McCray might tell you.)

Ask Clear Questions

I try hard to do all the legwork of my questions. I start with where I am with things, what my hope is, and what I know already. That way, I can get some of the legwork out of the way so that my friends can advise me understanding my mindset around what I’m asking. The better the questions, the better the help you receive back.

Be Available for Them

Don’t forget that it’s a two-way street. Make sure you’re available to give your friends advice when they ask. Give some kind of value back to the equation. And make sure they know that they matter to you even when you’re not asking them for advice.

Be Sparing

Don’t lean on your friends all the time. It goes from them feeling helpful to them feeling burdened. It’s up to you to understand how often is too often, but you’ll figure it out. The more sparse the response to your questions, the more likely you’re not really in a healthy balance.

Use the Advice

In my example from yesterday, I went against the naming advice I was given, but only because everyone’s great ideas gave me a better sense of why I picked what I picked. But the OTHER advice, I took it all and will run with it. It strengthened me. I have some GREAT friends for knocking my head into the right place.

Do You Do This?

Do you already do this? Is this the way you move through life? Have you read about other people using their own advisory boards? Maybe they use other terms, but I’m curious how this exists out in the wild. (Wild=”everywhere outside my head.”) Share your thoughts.

Yes I do this to some extent.
I have a network of friends who I’ve met through a community that grew around a website. Over the years a handful of these people became close friends and we talk daily through a private Google Group we’ve set up.

This group of friends are constantly amazing me with their support, advice, and opinions on everything from work related things, personal things, you name it we’ve probably covered it. Job gains, job losses. New relationships, divorce. Cancer, health. You name it.

These people, scattered all over the map, make up my personal advisory board.

Lately, I’ve begun to reach out to some other people for advice (yourself included) and am amazed by how truly giving of time and thought people in the web community can be.

Now we just have to remember to “Pay it Forward” as often as we can.

AMEN my friend! I have this small tight knit group as well and use them when necessary to get second opinions, check my future and just be good friends.

I leaned on some of them pretty heavily recently with all the changes in my world and they have been great.

This is a great idea. It makes sense to clearly define who will advise me on my decisions. This is different from having a mentor. In a corporation, isn’t it important to know who is on the board of directors? Would it matter to know who is on my advisory board?

Great insight Chris. What’s interesting is how you point out that this is probably already happening. I think the beauty of the idea of the advisory board is that for most people its a bit of a natural occurence; that is to question friends about life choices etc. To add to that value though, being more deliberate about it takes it the next level. Many churches across the country understand this and implement it as a “Small Group”. Small Groups in a church setting I would expect to be personal/spriritual, but taking that concept to your career should be an incredible support/motivation engine, especially for the self-employed.

I can’t wait to formalize my advisory board. The best part is that I think/hope the people I choose will be honored in some way through it.

BTW, I found you through Scoble a little while ago and enjoy your blog daily.

It also helps if the friend asking for help actually has a good idea. :-)

One of the most interesting things is watching how all the players in a circle of advisers come to different conclusions and end up with totally different ideas. The potential options can be incredible and either reinforce the initial direction or open up new possibilities.

I’m also reminded of the difference between a real writer and someone who thinks she is a writer. The real writer will solicit feedback and recognize that she won’t catch all the typos or see the repetition in thought. She sees value in outside review.

The person who thinks she is a writer will fail to see the value of someone else reviewing her work. She doesn’t need help. Who better than she to correct or check her work?

Attitude will always play a big role in the success of a personal advisory board.

Of course! My board of advisers isn’t fixed, by any means, but I have a slew of smarties to whom I can turn for advice. It does require an investment of one’s own time, as you say (the reciprocity/pay-it-forward thing) but truthfully, I get at least as much out of that end of the deal as the other.

    Chris,

I just finished Guy Kawasaki’s “The Art of the Start”, and it gave me the idea to put together an advisory board for a project which I’m working on.

Now to figure out who would best fit the bill…

I adopted this practice about 3 months ago – when I was first contemplating leaving my day job. It’s important when selecting people for your Personal Advisory Board that you remember to pick folks who can be candid and straight with you. Don’t just pick people who will sing your praises.

My advisory board is composed of 5 people who know me both personally and professionally, and who are always willing to tell it to me straight. Even when it’s stuff I’d rather not hear.

All of the great success writers speak of this practice. (ex. Napoleon Hill’s Keys to Success) Surround yourself with great people and you will be motivated to great results. Mentors and mentoring go a long, long way in this world.

I received a card statement yesterday, and discovered that there was an unauthorized charge from the InfoSys Technologies LLC in the amount of $11.98
I wanted to resolve the problem and called their customer support number 517639-0760, but I reached their answering machine.
From the message I found out that the best way to contact them would be through e-mail support@infosystemplates.net
I wrote a letter about my problem to the noted e-mal address, and within 15 minutes I received a reply that the situation will be reviewed, and in about 5-8
hours, I will receive a notice to my e-mail, and then, during 72 hours I will get a refund.
Today I have received a refund and want to take back all the claims for InfoSys Technologies LLC.
The mistake was corrected very fast, and they have shown themselves as a serious business team.
Besides, I got a free version of their product as compensation.
    Good work, keep it up!

Nothing seems to be easier than seeing someone whom you can help but not helping.
I suggest we start giving it a try. Give love to the ones that need it.
    God will appreciate it.
