Martin Luther King Jr- Kitchen Table Talks

As part of black history month, this Kitchen Table Talks video points out an exceptional audio collection that Hachette audio sent me, Martin Luther King: The Essential Box Set: The Landmark Speeches and Sermons of Martin Luther King, Jr. (amazon affiliate link). The point I hope to make in this very short video is that we have to go behind the “icon” of what Dr. King stood for and learn. We have to take his wisdom, not just for the cause he set it forth to serve, but in understanding HOW he spoke, how he communicated, and what those messages mean to us, and do something with it ourselves.

I think these CDs are valuable from many angles, and I’m grateful for Hachette audio for sharing them with me. Hope you check them out, too.

    Chris,

Thank you for sharing. In celebration of Martin Luther King Day I went to a documentary, I think it was called King: Man of Peace in Time of War and for the first time I really paid attention to his use of language, his choice of words and the impact they had. And in several situations, while being interviewed his interviewers tried to bait him and tried to make him angry and he remained so calm and clearly articulated what he had had to say. To me, that was very telling about the person he was at his essential core.

At the end of the film there was a discussion and I learned so much from the conversation. I wrote a blog post about it.

Thank you for sharing! Avil Beckford

really love this one. thanks Chris for highlighting the work underneath the work of the incredible MLK.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an excellent communicator. I teach one of his lesser known works, Letter from Birmingham Jail, in my Critical Thinking college courses. Is is an extremely well-crafted argument. Read more on my website.

Chris, I think this addresses the idea of going deep. A couple of years ago I went to a talk w. Bishop Desmond Tutu. I heard the stories of living w. apartheid from my Vicar who had worked closely w. Bishop Tutu in South Africa during those tumultuous times.
While listening to Tutu I realized I had just accepted every story about him & became an admirer without having done any reading or research about who he was. I was willing to let others do the work and tell me why I should pay attention and listen.
You see this across the landscape. People say we should go back to the values of the Founding Fathers without reading one thing they wrote or knowing any real history about them. People follow “Gurus” without diving deep to find out what this person is really about. There are people on the Chris Brogan or Gary Vaynerchuk bandwagon who don't have a real idea of what they actual do.I am guilty of doing this with leaders too. I don't want to be Chris or Gary but I am interested in what they do because they have carved out something for themselves through hard work and innovation. It is up to me to dig deep past the words and as Chris did with MLK find out what else is there behind the words. Can I carve out my own unique path and be a leader?

Martin Luther King had a very powerfully liberating insight about humanity: We can behave no higher than our own inward self talk allows. If there are to be changes 'out there', they begin 'in here'.

MLK was such brilliant man. I read one of his discourses recently and was impressed by his wisdom and power.

I also knew MLK from his speeches and the movement that he stood for. He's an inspiring individual for anyone who wishes to better themselves and the whole.

    Thanks for sharing Chris

Thank you for including this. My late father marched and went to jail with Dr. King and it's great to read the correspondence Dr. King sent to my father. He was a student of how to craft a message.

    Chris,

just got Thesis yesterday from copyblogger, found this theme on SEO.MOZ where I am studying SEO. Have not implemented looking forward to using.

As far as the Martin Luther King Jr books, I also knew he was a great man who advocated change, but peacefully. But, I never realized how well se spoke or that his cause helped me, a dumb white guy. The cause he took on has changed the whole world and even people like me have felt the rewards from his wins.

This is the deep dive into the source of MLKjr as a Humanitarian & Global Thinker. One of the highlight memories of my childhood is watching the March on Washington & Dr King's speech on television – it was black & white in those days. Thank you for passing the foundations forward into the Social Space Chris. Warmly, Jeris

Good post Chris. As we always say. But I think you touched on a very profound point. It's one thing to have great things to say, but it's another to say things great. I love the way MLK emphasized his words to make a point. This made people who listened to him believe even more in what he was communicating. Thanks for making us aware of this and the about the CD set. Ordering mine today.

Could you cite specific examples of what you admired about Dr King's speaking content or elements? I felt your review was surprisingly brief and superficial but had strong structure building up to some solid content–which didn't happen. I also didn't get a chance to note the name of the boxed set.

There are few legends in the world who set an example to for the mankind to follow when you are in trouble. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and Lenin are among those. There thought and their contribution is priceless to the world. And you did great job by providing this to all.

Chirs – our post validates the importance of creating the National Holiday to celebrate this great man. Over MLK weekend last month I caught some of his speeches being aired on the radio and was so moved by his incredible gift at public speaking. Not just in delivery, but in his ability to craft such an intricate, meaningful message. I agree with an earlier comment about the Letter from the Birmingham Jail. I happened upon this a few months ago on Tim Ferriss' website – he was sharing it because it helped him stick to his convictions in the face of the criticism he's garnered since his 4 hour Work Week was published. I was dealing with a very serious situation involving several people within an organization, struggling to decide what the “right” course of action would be. After reading this letter by Dr. King, I knew in my heart that although extremely hard, there was only one course of action, the morally right course. Thank you for reminding us of Dr. King's enormous gifts.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a great thinker and the way he used to speak had an hypnotic effect on the people. This was a very good video to share over here. It was great to come to terms with such useful information.

Dr. Martin Luther King surely experienced, and died for, as they nurtured and re-invigorated the roots of freedom loving people at home and abroad. In the words of Dr. King, I too have a dream, a dream that elected officials and those running for office, including the President of the United States, journey to Springfield at least once during their terms of their office, and on special occasions such as this, to pull a weed for themselves and for their country
