My 12 Targets for 2007

Rooftops 1I was talking with a Flickr friend, and she mentioned one of those “Things to do before I die” lists. I said, if you really want to give it some meaning, come up with things you want to do for 2007. Of course, why would I issue that kind of challenge without taking it for myself. So, here are 12 things I want to see happen in 2007 personally/professionally:

12 Targets for 2007

  1. See My Direct Result on Growing my Business- I work for a guy who’s into the long term, and who believes in investments over direct and obvious ROI, but for myself, I’m interested in seeing how I can bring business back to my company- through money, relationships, partnerships. I hope to show tangible proof that hiring me was a good idea.

  2. Visit Europe- Until last year, I probably hit no more than seven cities in my life, and Canada and Bermuda were the extent of my non-US travel. In 2007, I will visit Stockholm, Tel-Aviv, and probably somewhere else- Amsterdam?
  3. Write a Non-Fiction Book- I plan to write about what I’ve learned over the last 12 months. I’m leaning towards writing a book about community development, but however the storyline turns out, it will be about new media, social interactions, and new ways of doing business.
  4. Write a Fiction Book- Back in the day, I wrote a LOT of fiction. I want to get this handled, as I never really did finish a larger work. So this will be the year. I’m just debating if it’ll be genre fiction or something a little more mainstream.
  5. See A Friend’s Business Succeed- I have so many friends in this space struggling and trying to make it. I offer help and advice where I can, and I’m hoping this year is where someone I’ve worked with in some manner gets their due for their hard work. (Obviously, I don’t have much control over this one, but it speaks to my belief in what so many of my friends are doing).
  6. Learn about Digital SLR Cameras- I’ll be getting a Nikon D70s fairly shortly. I’ve used point-and-shoot cameras forever. I hope to make good use of this new rig, so I’ll have to learn.
  7. Tackle Final Cut- I’m going to move up from iMovie this year. I have to, because I know I’m leaving behind some stronger editing options by just using iMovie, so this year, I’ll bite the bullet and give it a go.
  8. Produce USEFUL Media- Small Boxes is my videoblog, and I do it for my own fun, and to give friends a view into my life. But I think I want to do something a bit more meaningful with it, something that’s of value to more than just friends and family. So I’ll see how I can make that happen.
  9. Recommit to Fitness and Health- I bought my book yesterday, and I started the groundwork for this. It’s not supposed to be a game of numbers, but for a measure, I’ll pick pounds lost, as well as days of the week I exercise. Anything else will be over and above. I had a great run of this in 2004. I think I can get it all back this year. Who knows? Maybe I’ll start recording “Fat Guy Gets Fit” again and threading it into the Health Hacks Podcast.
  10. Fix Some Financial Bumps- I’ve got some old wounds to clear up, and I’m using 2007 as the gauntlet year to get it done. I feel we’re closer than ever to get over the hump. We’ll see. This will bring so much extra peace to my life. If this one bit works out, I’m going to feel accomplished.
  11. Work with Chris and Bryan and Steve on PodCamp Boston2- We’re aiming to make PodCamp Boston 2 a LANDMARK experience, with all kinds of useful information, engaging collaboration, and productive future-building. One reason I know this will be a killer experience is that everything else I’m doing inter-relates to this. Building Video on the Net with a talented team is teaching me things about PodCamp, and what I took from PodCamp went right into Video. Make My Own TV in March will help me understand more of what we can do at PodCamp as well. It will all work well together, and I know that this PodCamp will be the one to remember. (Of course, I hope to say that every year!)
  12. Continue to Keep My Family Happy- It’s hard to believe, but now that I travel extensively, and now that I’m working harder than ever on something I’m passionate about, I’ve actually had a BETTER relationship with my family. Well, it’s true, and I’m working on making 2007 a banner year for my wife and children. We’ll really grow stronger this year, as we’re planning out our lives a little more lately. We’re thinking about the way we’re living life, instead of letting it just live us. That’s making a great difference in how we get things done.

And so those are my targets. I now have to set about breaking them chunks that are more “to scale” with how my brain thinks. I’ll build them into small boxes, tie those boxes to weeks within months within years, and in that way, I’ll see that journey reduced to steps. I’ll move forward and see how many bells I can ring.

What about you? What do you want to see happen in 2007?

    Love the term “target.” It’s so much better then “resolutions.”

    I’m right there on #9 with you as well as a few others, but #9 is the one in my cross hairs at the moment.

    2007

    The Year of Adventure — or How I Learned to Stop Waiting and Live the Life of “the new” that I Want

    The Top Ten List of Must Do’s for 2007

    In the vein of becoming more disciplined (am I setting my chaos-loving/impulsive/drama-addicted/artist-self up for failure with this one? let’s hope not)

    10) CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE FINANCIALLY DISCIPLINED
    This entails
    * automatic withdrawl of funds into RSP’s and a travel fund
    * making larger payments down on my line of credit ( I really liked being debt free one year ago, I can be debt free again)
    * brewing my own java in the morning, and taking my lunches to work

    9) CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE PHYSICALLY DISCIPLINED
    Ok, so now that my food cravings are gone, and I’m learning this new habit of inviting family, friends and perfectly charming strangers into my life to break bread and break a sweat with, this should be the best time to get serious about what I ingest and what I burn off. The goals? 3-fold
    * lose weight, that requires a disciplined approach to buying, planning, preparing and measuring food (Note to self, call that cutting-edge nutritionist JoAnne got me the number of)
    * get fit means cardio for 30 minutes everyday, strength training 3 times a week (thank gawd for Sandie and Randy), and LOTS of water (oh am I gonna have a glow or what???)
    * don’t forget the pleasures of the body either .. a different sampling bottle of red wine a week (what have I been waiting for? I live in the middle of Wine Country for gawd’s sake) and a visit to the massage therapist every 2 weeks (I think I just fell in love with myself! gawd I’m so nice to me)

    In the vein of self-enrichment because I refuse to stagnate, and what better role model is there to teach my son to be a student of life?

    8) CONTINUE TO IMPROVE MY MEANS OF SELF-EXPRESSION
    Oh yeah playing with my DSLR camera is fun, but I’m not mastering it as a medium like I thought I could through my own experimentation. So..
    * DSLR courses most certainly and
    * Photoshop course perhaps
    * buy a new tripod since mine is a pain-in-the-ass
    * get that softening lens I want
    * finish my last 3 paintings (come on already Trish, it’s an hour per, tops! commit already!) and bite the bullet and post them on the net somewhere
    * create 2 more by this time next year
    * Oh please, say we can take that jewelry-making/silver-smithing course at OCAD this summer! please, please, please?
    * dance…bellydance with Leisa, MOVE with Siobhan and Kali, paint the air in the room with the movements of my body…and yes I WILL get to The Phoenix NightClub at least ONE Saturday night , and I WILL get to the Lulu Lounge for at least one Salsa lesson this coming year.

    7) EXPERIMENT AND MASTER NEW THINGS WITH MY SON
    * guitar lessons…the goal, be able to play a couple songs by the time we go camping this summer
    * archery lessons and mother/son league (no gun club until I can prove to myself I’m good at target practice)

    Because I really AM convinced there is lots of meat AND juice in the whole “Disowned Self” Gestalt experiments:

    6) I CAN DO THE TOMBOY, I CAN DO THE SEX KITTEN, LET’S TRY ON “THE SOPHISTICATE” FOR SIZE
    oh boy, this one’s intimidating, I’m gettin shakey just thinking about it
    * more girlie hair
    * nails, manicure (gulp)
    * pedicure (gulp)
    * girly boots and shoes with heels (lawd hepp me)
    (what the hell am I thinking, waiting until I’m 43 to learn all this stuff other chicks mastered 2 decades earlier?)

    5) A CALM ENVIRONMENT PRODUCES A CALM MIND — REDECORATING MY CONDO
    look out yard sales and closet organizers, Feng Shui and minimalism, here I come!

    And what is life, if it isn’t about hunting down and bagging some Big Game Fun?

    4) THERE ARE MANY MORE POTENTIAL LOVERS IN THIS WORLD THAN THE ONE I JUST LEFT BEHIND
    ***I’m going to kiss a different man for every month this year***
    because my lips miss it
    because I’m damn good at it
    because it’s fun
    and because such luscious lips presently going to waste is a crying shame which needs correction.

    3) SAY YES TO EVERY INVITATION TO FUN AND ADVENTURE THAT COMES MY WAY
    nuff said

    2) GET MY EARLIER-DISCUSSED IDEA OF “WHAT TO DO BEFORE WE DIE~~ GIRL’S CLUB” OFF THE GROUND
    * write the emails, make the phone calls, compile the lists, pick the monthly dates for the small/cheap adventures and the quarterly dates for the more expensive adventures

    And lastly, because life really is too short:

    1C) LET CHICAGO HAVE ITS WAY WITH ME
    * photograph its incredible architecture
    * shop the Golden Mile

    1B) EXPLORE THE MAYAN RUINS IN MEXICO
    where I will drink pina coladas, stick flowers in my hair, snorkel in the ocean and “feel” the sun worship me until I have that killer fucking tan

    1A) ROAD TRIP WITH MY BOY
    either
    * Southwest States (New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada — is it safe to bring an 11 yr old to BurningMan Festival?)
    or
    * East Coast (Nova Scotia, PEI, New Foundland and what’s that little french island off the coast?) catch our own lobster, make our own sand castles, maybe even kiss a cod or two!

    …………..holy cow……………it’s going to be a busy year…………..I better stock up on ginseng and RedBull……

    I want you to pick ONE goal with a definable metric, the one most important and passion-inflamed, and be able to write it in a sentence.

    This will be critically important on January 6.

    Chris,

    I’d be happy to impart what I know if you ever want sit down with your dslr and FCP. I’m a D100 guy myself and I’ve got a pretty nice little FCP setup. The rest of the stuff I’ll be either eager to see your progress on or picking your brain about. Number 12 is HUGE.

    I also like the idea of ‘targets’ rather than resolutions, but we used ‘wishes’ instead. Actually, I can’t take credit for the wishes idea… it was all Paul (www.8wishes.com). But, here’s the video of my wishes for 2007 (and beyond):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4-6Yzl6YBE&watch_response

    1. Raise $10,000 in 2007
    2. See an America that lives “less dangerously” in 2007
    3. 44th President who cares about REAL issues
    4. No more children born with AIDS (hopeful and very forward thinking)
    5. Happiness for my sisters
    6. Success for my brothers
    7. Run a 2.44 half-mile
    8. Bring all my friends, family, supporters together to celebrate 2007 fundraising

    Paul’s is the original, and the video I responded to on YouTube.

    Thanks, and best of luck on your 12 targets, wishes, whatever they may be.
