My Word of Mouth Saves You Over Two Hundred Bucks

July 10, 2008 · Comments

Thankfully, seeing Mr. Stowe Boyd’s blog (a never-miss on my reader) reminded me that I have something to promote on behalf of one Mr. Andy Sernowitz.

July 30th, swing over to Chicago, and check out Andy’s Crash Course in Word of Mouth Marketing. (And while you’re there, visit Liz Strauss and give her a kiss for me.)

Andy’s got a five step program on learning word of mouth marketing. He’s charged tons to Microsoft, TiVo, and others, but for you, he’s willing to make you an offer. (More on that in a sec). By the way, Andy promises this to be very active, intense, and interactive.

So, Stowe has a code and I’ve got a code, and I wouldn’t want you to have to pick and choose, so once again, here’s Stowe Boyd’s post with a great code that will save the faithful readers of /Message $250.

Or, you could use my code. (I make zero bucks doing this. Hey wait! What? Nope, didn’t read that I do.)

Deal says, Use code “welovechrisbrogan” when you register. (I love me, too.)

Chicago: July 30 and September 4 (oh, is there a second date? So said the email!)

Why this is interesting to me

You know, it’s really only recently that I’ve been hit with LOTS of talk about word of mouth marketing. I wrote about David Balter’s book, and got some lively conversation. I have spoken to lots of different people involved with Affiliate Marketing, and I’ll be speaking on social media at the upcoming Affiliate Summit in Boston, so that’ll be a chance to meet even more folks into this space.

I like that Andy went to bloggers he knew and asked us to help him promote his word of mouth event. Andy also sent me his book in a cool way. He sent it along with another book he thought I might want to read. In fact, if I weren’t fairly tied up with stuff this summer, I might even consider getting out there to see what Andy has in mind, because I missed his talk at PodCamp NYC.

So, I dunno. I want your thoughts, too. What’s this whole upswell in word of mouth marketing? Why is this suddenly MORE talked about? Or is it? Is this just me tuning in a new dial?

  • WOM, word-of-mouth, it's growing. It's growing because all else fails, all else is non-sustainable, and because the desires to help, to connect, are universal and more deliciously refreshing when found in a business these days.

And there's lots of upside for its expression, too.

PS: Becky McCray at www.smallbizsurvival.com...she told me about your post here. There it is. Word-of-mouth...in action...right here in River City...
  • I think word of mouth marketing has become more popular BECAUSE of the social networks and tools available to me. My clients 10 years ago would have been almost entirely based in Ottawa and maybe the surrounding areas (stretching as far as Kingston if I'm lucky).

But using the Internet, my client base stretches much farther now. For example, I have a client in Arizona that I literally met in a chat room. We were both listening to the same interview that YOU were doing and now we are working on an amazing project together. My husband and I are shooting a documentary in Cincinnati in a couple of weeks because of people he met online. I have other clients in Southern Ontario and Belleville, Ontario that came to us entirely through word of mouth, and via the Internet.

What's important is to know HOW to engage people across these channels. How to solicit word of mouth marketing without coming across as desperate or annoying. That's key.

Strategies like the ones Andy Sernowitz passes on are tremendously important to helping us learn how to create opportunites. Thanks for sharing this!
  • Word of Mouth, has is and always will be one of the most important and vital components of any marketing campaigns, whether online or off. This is where providing quality and standing behind your stuff is really crucial. Word of Mouth can make you and very easily break you.
