New Job New You – a Book Review

January 26, 2010 · Comments

Here’s a review of Alexandra Levit’s new book, New Job, New You: A Guide to Reinventing Yourself in a Bright New Career (amazon affiliate link). I really enjoy Alexandra’s style. She’s published many good books in the career space, and this is a very timely one for the displacement era that we find ourselves in. In the video, I mention also Pam Slim’s Escape from Cubicle Nation, because I could see this book pairing well with that one. Levit’s is tightly written and focuses strongly on helping one think through a career change. It’s a great read.

Thesis WordPress theme

Thesis is the search engine optimized WordPress theme of choice for serious online publishers. If you’re a blogger who doesn’t understand a lot of PHP, Thesis will give a ton of functionality without having to alter any code. For the advanced, Thesis has incredible customization possibilities via Thesis hooks.

With so many design options, you can use the template over and over and never have it look like the same site. The theme is robust and flexible enough not only to accommodate a site like ChrisBrogan.com, but also to enable the site to run far more efficiently than it ever has before.

  • I'll be honest, there are alot of books in the marketplace that seem to address the topic of switching careers but Alexandra's book stands out amongst the competition as being straight forward, easy-to-read and FRESH (not full of the same advice contained in many of the other books and reference guides.) Regardless of whether or not you think that you are ready for change, the author helps you realize that change is coming and it is not necessarily a "bad thing." Ms. Levit's book prepares you to make the necessary next steps to ensure success. After reading it several times, this book has been filed on my bookshelf next to "The Seven Habits..." and "How to Win Friends..." It's that good!

Thanks for the review, Bro. Heard about this book, but nice to have worthy opinion laid on it. :)

You must be an extremely fast reader to turn out all these paid book "reviews." Will you ever do a book review that has an affiliate link and say that it sucks? It's no fun seeing a "book review" always knowing what the answer will be. I am wanting the old Chris back.
  • 1.) They're not paid book reviews. I don't get paid to read or review any books. (first incorrect accusation.)

2.) No. I've written about it before. I won't review a book I don't like. Meaning, I'll read plenty of books I don't like, but I won't make a review of them. It's the way I choose to participate.

3.) You can't have the old Chris back, but here's your second incorrect response. Because I use affiliate links, you presume that I am somehow swayed to review a book in a certain way. The most I've ever made via Amazon affiliate links wouldn't pay for dinner in a nice restaurant. So, would I sacrifice my audience for writing a review that ultimately pays me a couple of bucks? Answer: no.

I know you really are trying hard to find holes in me. I know this. There are plenty. Going after me for your perception of my sincerity is a wrong turn. It's not worth the effort. I can give you the holes if you want them. I share them freely.

Not sure if you want more advice about performing on video Chris, but one thing you're doing ALMOST right is being close to the camera. The whole secret is to get your face right in the lens and virtually never look away. This is hypnotic, but more importantly, communicates with the eyes.

Here's Perry Lawrence in his own video that demonstrates this.

  • Always working on it. : )
  • Must pick this one up Chris get a good feeling about it, felt the product marketing could have been improved. The design and packaging want me to pick it tommorow. She seems nice on Twitter (god this Trust Agent thing is catchy). She seems like you to have the ability to produce content that motivates a career changer. I personally feel Pam Slim is more helpful but maybe both would work for you, hell they may well.

God and Hell and my RE teacher might be climbing the wall today. Good choices here. Good luck Alexandra from one writer to another.
  • Chris, I can't thank you enough for this. It means the world to me.
  • Can't wait to take a peek at this. Still my favorite is 'The Four Hour Work Week' . IMHO a must read (after Trust Agents of course).

43 working days left before the chains are lifted and I get to find a profession that I can truly embrace. Found your site via Gary V's book "Crush It" and was glad to come across your book review.
  • Brogan - NO MORE BOOK REVIEWS OR YOU WILL EXPLODE MY KINDLE. Sorry for shouting and I kid, I kid.

Really enjoying "Get Seen" very high quality and important book.
