Off Topic- This Robot Scares the Christmas Out of Me

March 21, 2008 · Comments

My robotics friend, David, sent me this video. In his typically soft-spoken way, he also agrees this looks spooky.

How does this relate to social media? I’ll stretch it. Because of YouTube, I didn’t have to see this in the news. I can share it with you. You can share it with others, re-blog, etc, etc. Portable media. Hmm. Now that would make a great expo, wouldn’t it?

  • Amazing!
The first few seconds it looks ok, but then you discover how big this is.
    Gave it a stumble.
  • For most of the video it reminds me of a dog, looking for a place to do its business.

    And, yeah, creepy.
  • Moly wholly.... DARPA does it again!
  • I saw this Big Dog bot a few months ago in a demo where they were trying to "kick it over." Seems they've improved it tremendously in just a few months.

    Truly amazing!!
  • Looks like a prototype for an at-at. Just wait until they build larger ones that have gun turrets.
  • Combine this droid with this sentry gun:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=ybaPJ51u1sI

that uses a Logitech webcam and an airsoft rifle, and you've got yourself some battle droids!
  • Um, yeah--that's really creepy. :-o
  • On one hand, I'm amazed and thanks for sharing, very cool. On the other hand, I am going to have nightmares of robot terminator goats chasing me through the woods.
  • Wow. Creepy and cool all at once. Looks like one of those costumes where one guy is the front and the other is the back.
  • WHO KNEW?
WOW!!! "TIME TO GET THE THROWNETS"!!!
    NOT THE DOENUTS!!!
  • DARPA gets all the cool toys!

    Thanks for sharing.
  • cool! I want one. I'm thinking I could send it out to get my groceries, walk my dogs, mow the lawn....
  • That is simultaneously one of the coolest and creepiest things I have ever seen.
  • Kat
    silly
they just need to get a mini plane to wrap a cable around it's legs
    and it will fall down
    i saw that done once
  • This is indeed creepy. And the way that it adjusts to changes in its relatively smooth path (e.g., the kicking and the snow-walking) makes it creepier. At least you can hear it coming. I rue the day when that puppy can approach silently.
  • I was this video a while back. Last night I saw this gatling gun on Future Weapons and later found this video. Combining the gatling gun with the robot would be truly fearsome.

Let's hope it never comes to a neighborhood near you.
  • Jeanne Breault
Rather disjointed stream of consciousness while watching: Creepy, scary...blind, lost...synchronization...speed ...agility...WOW! imagine the possibilities!...search and rescue a la 9/11 or Crandall Canyon mine collapse...defensive combat...deep water/rugged terrain search and recover...prison guards..."mechanics" freeing humans to do healing and other work only humans can do.

    Awesome!
  • I saw this earlier in the week. I still think it's awesome. It's strong, weighs less than a horse, eats less than a horse, and doesn't get sick.
  • And we are not on the fast track to the world of the Terminator?
  • You must also go watch this parody: http://gizmodo.com/372272/video-of-bigdog-beta-...
  • Haha, so where to all the missiles and bombs strapped to our jets that costs several hundred thousand a pop fit into efficiency?
The military is not worried about saving cash, they have a lot of it, each one of americas bazooka rockets can fly several miles and find it's target and costs $75,000 a shot.
