ONHollywood- Do We Need Editors?

Breaking News 20The panel is Breaking News 2.0. On the panel, Ariana Huffington, Alan Citron, and Kevin Rose. Kara Swisher, the moderator, is either doing a great job of playing the conflict-driven moderator, or she’s not especially versed or behind citizen media. She keeps saying words like “allow.” I think she’s pushing mostly the notion that EDITORIAL OVERSIGHT is vital to making this still work out the right way.

I guess the premise is how this new technology enables junk instead of news, and there still needs to be editors as a mechanism of trust. My interpretation, not her words.

Yes, Kara Swisher just asked about how much of this new world relates to the old world. How many editors? How do they function, etc.

I don’t know. Is that true? Is it now a hybrid?

Are we looking for editors? Or guides? What do you think?

Chris is giving some live updates from ON Hollywood, billed as Silicon Valley meets Hollywood.

Ah yes, Kara Swisher, she who was brainwashed by the AOL people in the dot.com area, wrote a book about how wonderful AOL was…then wrote a retraction/correction follow up book once it became clear that AOL wasn’t the little darling she had made it out to be…

Tools are online and being built to give editing capabilities to people online. Just as secretarial work was replaced in the ’80′s with word processors, editors are being replaced by people being able to make their own filters.

“I guess the premise is how this new technology enables junk instead of news, and there still needs to be editors as a mechanism of trust. ”

I think it’s true that you get plenty of junk but I think editorial oversight would be an enormous mistake. Look to what establishment media has become as a result of this mechanism. Are we getting any less junk there? I don’t think so. At least with new media or citizen media you have the occasional uncensored discovery or “as it’s happening” moment that can be really incendiary.

Introducing editors to the equation opens the path for bias and undue influence, in my opinion.

Need editors? I’d say no, although there may be a desire for editors. It depends on a few things:
Are you looking for a certain consistent quality of video? It may be that an independent editor may help provide a consistent look or a more polished look. But that isn’t always that is wanted.
Are you looking for a consistent message/concerned about others perceptions? An editor might help to prevent shooting off of the mouth. On the other hand sometimes raw is what is wanted. Also, some people are fine at self control without external control.
There are styles that may create a desire for editors, but given the nature of the “new media” I wouldn’t classify it is a need. The popularity of blogs seems to speak to the lack of need to me.

Content creators: You don’t need an editor IF you have those skills or vision yourself. Otherwise find an editor to *partner with* – NOT to rule over you by fiat.

I agree with Kevin- we need curators.

We have an editor in chief of sorts over at GNM Parents, and this works great- someone else to give feedback and tweek posts, and form the story arcs we might not do on our own. It’s helpful, it’s terrific, and I absolutely love and appreciate the Editor to bits.

Sometimes I should remember to sit on my own blog posts and give them a second look before posting- I am certainly glad Stu does this at GNM.
