Our Perception of Others – Kitchen Table Talks

In this edition of Kitchen Table Talks, I wanted to talk about how we perceive others, and how that relates to us. This stems from a conversation I had recently where someone said, “Oh, but YOU never are nervous before a speech,” and when I confessed that I was, she said, “then how come you never talk about that?” So, here I am:

Definitely Chris. Life is full of different perceptions. What we see here is totally different from what this person sees. However, we should always get the whole side of the story before making judgements and/or perceptions about someone.

This is so spot on! We are seen in the same way that we present ourselves, what we say and show about ourselves is mostly what other people see as well.

In fact there was a article in Psychology Today a while back that stated that the people that spoke up whether they said something that was correct or not, were seen as more competent, which proves people believe what you put out there.

I think my issue is that a lot of time our perception of ourselves don't always match up with the reality either. So if you perception of who you are is less than what it actually is, then people are going to see that and think that is who you are.

That is my challenge – remembering to show my strong side. If I had to analyze myself, I think it is because I am afraid of failure, so I have developed this self defense mechanism where I downplay my attributes, lay all my negatives out on the table and then I am left shocking people with how great I am. I set myself up in a way where people are shocked by what I provide and then I am a lot less further away from failure.

In all reality I am failing all along, because although I constantly set the bar high for myself, I am lowering the bar that others set for me, because what you project a lot of times will overshadow what you do. So I know it is important to both look beyond your perception of someone and also show your strong side and be proud of your assets.

    This was a great post!

One of my friends in England comes from rather ‘good stock’, so to speak. Think of Hugh Grant with humility and you get the idea.
Anyway, I once asked him how he does it, i.e. make everyone enjoy his company. He said a ‘gentleman puts others at ease’.
What he meant was that in social events he’d put his own worries aside and make others feel comfortable instead. It’s a wonderful gift.

    Damnit Chris, thank you.
I have no idea why that's what came out when I typed, but it was. I stared at the blinking cursor for about 92 seconds and tried to figure it out, but I couldn't. For some reason these KTTs are uncanny in their timeliness and I always feel as if you'v made each video to speak directly to me.
    Damnit Chris, thank you.

    Great Kitchen table talk Chris,

One of my closest friends in college told me a while back that when he first met me he thought I was kind of snob and a jerk because I did not talk all that much when he was around.

He just realized that I was introverted and apprehensive around new people. I am very thankful to my friend for sharing this with me because it made me realize how much I tended to judge people before ever getting to know them.

So true, and I think very helpful for folks to know that those feelings don't really go away. At no point do we “make it” and stop being nervous. It's always in how we reframe to allow ourselves to take the step anyway. I always try to picture the worst thing that could happen- since it never involves locusts or plagues, I usually just go forth and see what I can do.:)

Thanks for being open. It helps.

Chris; These tidbits that you publish are terrific. I just read your post about communicating and believe that they go together. Our perceptions are based on our personality and we communicate through the same channel. One of life's greatest lessons for me was learning to understand personalities.

This made me realize that how I perceive others in not always correct; as you stated so well. Additionally, I've had to learn how to articulate the same message in different ways to have it heard.

I highly recommend Dr. Robert Rohm's http://www.personality-insights.com. I am not an affiliate, I just know that these materials changed my perceptions forever.

Perceptions often override reality, instead of reality driving perception.
Your speaking engagement stories ring true. I've had the same thing even when presenting on things I'm the 'expert' on. Folks tend to assume things about speakers, especially ones they've never met.

One thing I'm still learning though is that the audience that attends your speaking engagement is anxious to see you succeed. Their hope is that you'll blow their socks off, and in a positive way, this influences their perception of how you'll come off.

Your comment about connecting to people is spot on. So many folks that present are first about the sell and less about giving value to people. How soon they forget that giving people value means they'll be coming back again to get more.

    Cheers,
    Todd 'tojosan' Jordan

    Chris,

I admittedly star these talks when they come across my RSS and I keep telling myself, I need to go watch them, and finally I'm sitting down and going through some of them.

This video brings up a great point about the world of social interactions overall. Take away the media we have perceptions just as easily with people in our immediate communities. I think the addition of media may do more to make this mistake of perception just that much larger. In what other time would we have had access to CEO's, Founders, and brands like we do today?

As much as I have delved into this space, I find myself sometimes having inaccurate perceptions because of their status in relation to mine. But overtime I've learned to shake those. When I approached you at SXSW in 2009, I was scared because in this industry you are influential and that equated untouchable to me. When I saw you carrying conversations with people and just being the down to earth guy you are it felt relaxing, and thus I approached you.

Thanks for bringing the obvious into the spot light. I firmly believe that the obvious can so easily be overlooked, and this video has helped me rethink my internal thought processes and I can hopefully help those I mentor shake that mentality as well.

Perceptions of who you are and what you are like. Interesting. This happens numerous times a day when we come into contact with people. We immediately develop a thought on who they are based upon things they say or do. Sometimes we are right and dead on and other times we could not be further from the truth. There are varying degrees of knowing people but in social media there seems to be a perceived attitude towards who people are, esp. the SM leaders. We want to be friends with them, we want to be a part of them, we want them to let people know that they know us – but doesn't this challenge our own judgment on who people are and why we would even want to get to know them?

The emphasis and importance placed upon certain people, like yourself, has caused us to stop thinking about the person as a person as we place them on a higher level. The need/desire to be like or recognized by the social media leaders has almost paralyzed our social skills and created a cult of attention. The “see me, mention me, oh you are nervous before a speech, me too so now we should be friends, right and make sure people know that as that is what I need out of this relationship; and oh yeah please do it on my timeline” way of building relationships.

I enjoy the kitchen table talks as it focuses our attention on you and the others as people. You take a shower, you put on pants one leg at a time, you have thoughts, ideas, you laugh, smile, get stomach aches, headaches … Maybe it is just that our attention is focused elsewhere that we do not think about that or maybe for some they do not care to or want to.

I actually experience this quite a bit when I'm speaking in front of a group. As a deep introvert, I'm always going bonkers inside when I present, but afterward people come up to me and mention how calm and confident I looked. It surprises me actually. Oh, if they only knew.

And you made a great point, Chris, when you said to be conscious of this in others. Too often, we're aware of our own feelings, but neglect to look deeper when we interact with others.

Good comments. Really separate but related thoughts; confidence going into a presentation, confidence leaders need to project and how we perceive others. I would like to hear you expand your thoughts on the first two.
