Phone to Net Integration

I use the BlackBerry Pearl as my mobile office when not attached to expensive airport wifi, and I’ve been thinking about the parts it doesn’t do for me.

  1. Podcast support- If I click a link to an mp3 file, I want my phone to translate and play it. Without thinking much about it. It’s just a file style, and it has audio resources. What’s the big whoop? (Technically, I know, but c’mon…)
  2. Javascript- It’s a javascript world kids. All the online web apps you use have javascript (unless you’re a microsoft fiend, and if so, stop reading my blog. : ) ). I want my phone to chunk that out so I can use those features easier.
  3. Google Calendar Integration- The BlackBerry Pearl supports up to 10 email addresses on the same device, including Web email clients like Google and Yahoo and Hotmail. So, why not integrate my calendar with my Google Calendar? You’re already acknowledging your phone hooks to the web. Give a brutha some love here.
  4. Rich Video Support- Yes, I see that you play .avi. Great! I still have the one tester movie that came with the phone. But why not play flash movies, at least. Oh… Flash support. Okay, well, Flash support and Rich Video Support.

Now, granted, my travel office needs are different than most folks. Most folks are happy with email, word, excel, and powerpoint. Or some variation on the above. But are’t there more people living in the rich media world? Don’t we need more from our devices?

But, I’m just rambling here. Jeff Pulver’s already answered the question as to why these services don’t exist, nor will they in the near future.

Our needs seem to be very similar. I bought the T-Mobile Dash thinking that with windows on it and windows media player I would have more options. I haven’t really tried anything with it just yet. Still getting comfortable with as a phone. Did setup an email address on it and seeing how I like that. Do I want alerts when I get an email, or do I want to just be able to check it randomly? I plan on doing a full review on my site once I’ve tested everything.

It won’t help you stream video off the net, but Super, found at http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html is a video conversion swiss army knife.

I can convert just about any video format to just about any other video format. I use it to convert all different kinds of video (flv, mp4, avi, etc.) to play on my Treo.

Google and Blackberry playing together in the yard would be nice.
