Pledge to End Hunger

March 10, 2009 · Comments

Pledge Banner I’m part of a project with Beth Kanter to end hunger. Actually, there are tons of us. The goal is simple: spend a few bucks and make the world better. I love those kinds of goals. But better still, I love a challenge, and this has a challenge built right in.

There are three things you can do today: give, volunteer, or share, which means that you could donate some money or some time, or you could at least share the news with others. Choice 3 is super easy, so if nothing else, stop by and do that?

Now, if you’re interested in giving some money or volunteering some time, sign up. I’m looking at Boston on their little US map and feeling sad that we’re in fifth place. Surely we can shoot past Illinois, right?

I’m looking at ways to help nonprofits every month in 2009. Helping to end hunger carries on the work I did with Share our Strength, and gives us both another way to spend just a few dollars to make a big impact.

Can you check it out for yourself? Stop by and see what you’re willing to do. And thanks.

  • Great cause Chris, and one that the 12for12k Challenge is supporting this month by raising money for Share Our Strength:

    http://12for12k.org/2009/03/04/fighting-hunger-...

Our supporters joined up with PledgeToEndHunger last week and helped reach the goal of 1,000 pledges for Austin - 140,000 kids fed.

We're continuing to raise money for 12 different charities each month in 2009:

    January - $4,800 for Warchild
February - $5,100 for Stop the Silence, dealing with sexual abuse of children.

Look forward to continuing to use social media for good throughout 2009.
  • This is a critical issue. I've been donating locally and as much as I can on a regular basis. This is a terrific cause and helping people at home who truly are in need.
  • Just a question: Is this a for-profit charity group?
  • Do you think a true charitable organization must be not-for-profit?
  • Hi Amy:
I think any organization can be charitable. But that wasn't my question.
  • Two Chris Brogan-style places to further that cause are Peter Deitz's Social Actions and the new http://www.idealistnews.com/
  • I am implementing social media to provide free eye exams to people in need. My model, just started in February will eventually provide thousands of free eye exams - no fundraising is necessary; by increasing the relevance of my "EyeHealth Information Facebook page" I will offer marketing to doctors across the country in exchange for them providing a handful of free eye exams. When the page is relevant enough, corporate sponsors will be invited to help fund the project, hopefully impacting thousands - perhaps a similar model can be used to feed people as you are trying to organize? For those interested in helping with the free eye exam projet:

    - just copy this URL onto your profile page on Facebook where it says "post a link" once you join the page

Thank you for circulating among your facebook friends.
    Best regards,

  • Hey Chris, Just checked the site out. It's great to see that you are part of such a great cause. If everyone did their part to give a little (whether it be time, food,or money) we would start to see a lot of progress.

I'm involved with a similar non-profit in Orlando called Rock For Hunger, where we spread awareness of homelessness, poverty, and hunger through music and concerts. Not only that, but we do feedings once a week, tutor underprivileged kids, and are working towards building a new school for them as well. I will definitely do what I can to help "Pledge to End Hunger" as this cause if very close to my heart! Thanks for letting me know about it!
  • Nice to see you continuing to share ways people can make a difference.

I recently saw a great segment on the news - Feed the Children (http://www.FeedtheChildren.com) is doing some great things by feeding people all over. This story is about what they did in Elkhart Indiana. Trucks of food and lines of people being taken care of.

  • This is fantastic, Chris - thank you! Best wishes to you and Beth and anyone else who participates. I'm fascinated by this online space and have been grateful to be involved with Blog Action Day 2008, BloggersUnite.org and PassOnTheGift.org. I hope to help bring more awareness to worthy efforts like this.

It's great to see you being a part of this, Chris. It's also a fine example of how internet marketing and social media can translate to actual real solutions for real life problems. One internet pledge = 35 pounds of food: that's what we call ROI!

Most importantly, thanks for helping shine a light on hunger in America, and being part of the solution!
  • Hi Chris,

That's a great cause! It's amazing how a little effort can help so many people. I do work with an orphanage in Bangladesh and it's a huge part of my life! I'm also doing some work now with a social enterprise www.bettertheworld which lets users surf the web and raise money for charity (no cost but done through downloading a search tool and sidebar). It's a great way for people who don't have the money or want to do more to give to charity. And 90% of the revenue goes to charity. Check us out if you have the chance!
  • Chris - It's so great to see so many social media rockstars getting involved in great causes like this! It's obvious that using the internet and social media for social good can be very powerful and you're doing an amazing job of helping to spread that message.

Thanks again for sitting down with me at SXSW and letting me get your thoughts on camera on how to use social media for social good. Here's a link to the video -
