Plus One is Not the Loneliest Number

I was just reading about the Plus One button from Google. Essentially, it’s going to be a way to vote up things you want to share in search and on sites that implement the button. It’s “like” for Google. Here’s a quick video:

If you can’t see the video, click here.

Will it be useful? I say yes. Google dominates search. Will I implement +1 on [chrisbrogan.com]? Absolutely. Will it lead me to billions of new customers? Not likely, but it will amp up certain search terms, that’s for sure.

Here’s hoping it’s out and touchable soon.

Right now the +1 button is not so useful, but I believe that this is part of the next big project Google is working on – their long-time rumored social network. They always release parts of their future products earlier, like now, with this button.

It sounds to me like they want us to curate the quality of the content and results they provide to be honest. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s essentially a like button to Google’s Social Media network.

When it utilizes an API to let people +1 specific articles and pages on websites they will see rapid implementation.

Okay Chris how exactly can one integrate the +1 feature onto a WordPress blog? Any ideas on this

You can’t do that yet, you can use the feature on Google only.

Do you think this feature could get out of control?? Different sites just trying to ramp up their SEO… if the two link?

    • http://rickmanelius.com Rick Manelius

Agreed. What about if they only allowed up to 10 +1 a day per logged in user? Or if you have 1000 total and if you exceeded your limit, it started to shave off others.

Or possibly best yet. If it’s your only +1, it’s powerful. But it’s really a +1/N where N is the number of +1 you’ve doled out. So if you’re +1 happy, it’s not really as impactful as if you liked just a select few articles.

Am I overcomplicating it? Yes! But damn it, these things matter!

I thought the same thing good point.

I feel that this further indicates and solidifies Googles commitment to make publicly elected authority a significant part of their ranking process. I can also understand the concerns that some may have considering it possibly being abused for SEO purposes. However, when all variables are taken into account and with continued algorithm updates that combat poor SERPs (Farmer – Panda), I can’t see why they can’t make it work. If you think about it, those with questionable intent will have to juggle more balls in the air and make them work just right to fool Google into giving them unearned ranking in the SERPs.

Microsoft has worked the Facebook “Like” into their algorithm and even though Google has Twitter now, this just adds that much more to the quiver since they dominate search.

of course + is one of the important button and i personally feel that Google is elected and authorized for this ranking process.

In the wake of all the Facebook like buttons spread across the web I am happy to see a viable competitor in Google +1. I don’t think it it perfect, but the quicker Google iterates, improves, and gets the +1 buttons out for publishers the faster it will be adopted. Give them 6 months to iron out the kinks and we will know if it has legs beyond Wave or Buzz. I thought Buzz and Wave was overhyped from the start. Personally, I think +1 will flourish.

I am with Meg .. wondering how people will find a work around with the risk of Google becoming obsolete. I am sure they thought about it.

I guess I will use it to see how it works. Only time will tell with what it will do to google search.

An interesting feature. Increasingly search engines seem to be linking into social networks. I can imagine this feature by Google work work quite well with any future plans for building their own social network. The balance of Google’s Algorithm will be interesting to view considering Google have their own views which may conflict against users’ choices.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays. Personally, I look forward to a nice “+1 plugin” to add to my blog. Hopefully it will turn into an effective way for folks that have quality content to boost their SERP rankings …. kind of how it should be, no? Thanks for the heads-up …

The tool today presumes that you know what’s beyond the click already. Which to me indicates that its usefulness is already sliced in half and prone to more used by those looking to make their own stuff more popular…on the search results pages at least.

When they release the button for sites, that will be more useful in my opinion.

This is so cool and will sure improve the quality of the websites and also PR of those sites.

Definitely a reaction to Facebook and their ever threatening competition. Could be a good feature but I do have a couple of reservations. Spam is obviously a big factor, they need a way to control and analyze what a “real” likes and what are not. I suppose Google are very good at this though and do have a pretty good track record so may work out a way. The other is that it is hard to like something before you’ve actually seen it. I wonder if the site can be liked when you’re viewing it rather than just in the search page results.

I think this is a great idea, although it might have been a better move for Google to integrate Facebook liking instead. Unless this is a completely vacuumed platform, which it’s not, I feel like it will be another Google Buzz. And that;s unfortunate because there’s real potential here.

I’m interested to see how they use my “social circle” to recommend links and search results.

    • http://www.FaceForwardMedia.com SEM Services

Agreed. Facebook integration would have been a good move, but obviously that option isn’t on the table. Hopefully +1 won’t become as inaccurately inflated as FB’s Like currently is.

  • http://www.kooldesignmaker.com custom logo design

Its good move by Google but more time consuming for users because first he has to confirm by reading the content of the website then he will come back to do +1.

  • http://www.logodesigngenius.com/ Logo Designer

Yeah,I totally agree with you..This features is similar to Digg..reader gives votes on relevant stories  and they get pushed to the top the list
