Press Release Experience?

Does anyone have experience writing press releases? Do you have resources I can look at? Should I just crib other press releases? Are there different variations of the format that I should know about?

That’s as good a reference as any.

However… here’s the dirty little secret of press releases: No one cares.

Press releases exist as a teaser for a journalist to pick up a story. If a journalist never writes the story, why did you bother? Sort of like if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it….

True story: When I worked at CBS News.com in Manhattan, we had a fax machine dedicated to receiving press releases. As you might imagine, since CBS News is a major news outlet, we received many press releases every day. The fax machine was set at the edge of a desk so that as paper came out, it went straight into the trash can below. Tell me: What was the point of any of those press releases being sent out?
