This new job is astounding in its variety, its demands, and the ability to reach out and engage ALL of my personal talents and abilities. I’m traveling, writing, drawing, entertaining, telling stories. I’m reaching out to communities and helping people. It’s truly an amazing opportunity. But Katrina said it best: When you find your dream job, life doesn’t get easier; it gets harder.
Starting with Email
Where I’m getting clobbered the most is email. I’m receiving plenty (250 a day). That’s not complaining. I love hearing from you. Please, keep writing to me. The challenge is on my end, to be sure that I read with intent, and that I don’t miss the most important nuggets of the experience.
One thing I learned: break up text into bite sized chunks. Use bold, and bullets, and formatting to help my eyes absorb it. Use headlines for sections.
Blogging, Podcasting, and Video Work
I have to find a better method to ensuring that I get to do the blogging, podcasting, and video stuff that I love to do. I’m squeezing out some blogging time, because I can do that while I’m emailing people, setting schedules, building up my new events, and all that. I can’t typity-type into the computer while shooting video or doing an audio podcast. One, it’d sound bad, but two, I can’t multitask across sensory experiences. Make sense?
So, I’m looking to carve out more time for that kind of thing.
Forced Health
I’m flying more, eating away from home more, and having many more opportunities to make better decisions. I’ve lost 7 pounds since I started traveling, but that doesn’t mean I’m healthier. I’ve learned that I have to really put my work together to make sure that I stay in control of my own health. I’m working on that now, building actual, planned, exercise back into my life. I’m not successful yet, but I’m fighting the fight.
Fast Response
It’s important to me to get back to folks quickly. Just because I’ve become more busy doesn’t mean I’m allowed to slack on responding to people. To that end, I’ve had to devise little systems to make sure I get back to folks in a timely fashion on those emails, voicemails, whatevers, that need responding. I’m using Gmail as my primary mail client, and so I use filters and stars to determine who needs a response.
I’m New Here
I’m figuring it out, and I’m loving the job in the process. I get to work with rockstars every day, and my boss is visionary and most important to me: he takes action.
Keep reading, folks. It’s only going to get crazier. I hope to continue to give you things to think about, things to comment on, and things to engage you and connect with you. I look forward to continuing the relationship we have together through this blog, but also through all of you I’ve met in person now. It’s cool to me that I continue to check off people who used to be in the digital category and that I’ve met now in person and spent some time with. I want more of that.
It’s a wild ride, I’ll give you that.
