Question The Rules

question the rules My friend, Johnny B. Truant, has an interesting content project called Question the Rules (affiliate link). What’s interesting is that Johnny’s offer is for those of you who want to live the nonconformist’s view of a business and life. Maybe you had purple hair in school. Maybe you still do? Maybe you just don’t like the way “the man” gets all the loot and you’re still shaking your empty fist at society. Yep, that’s how Johnny sees it.

From here, it gets practical, though. This isn’t about headbanging. It’s about understanding the do-it-yourself mindset. It’s about setting real goals, instead of those fluffy things you put on mission statement guidebooks. It’s got a module on belief and faith (and not necessarily the religious kind – at least not entirely). And it ends with a module on networking outside of the box.

I tried getting through every single piece of information that Johnny and partner Lee Stranahan put into their program, but there was so much. I admit that I skipped a bit to make sure that I could see enough of it all to report back.

It’s not for everyone. If you’re buttoned down and very conservative, this might not be your course. But I like Question The Rules as a project because it speaks to the outsiders (and boy, I was quite the outsider for a lot of my life).

It’s a great escape velocity project, and it’s definitely a “get going and DO something” kind of course/project.

An Offer

Johnny gave me an offer to give to you. This thing costs $397 US. But from today (Wednesday) until Friday (the 19th), if you use code “chrisbrogan”, it will only cost $197. Yep. $200 off for those of us looking to achieve escape velocity.

Want some? Swing by Question the Rules, look around, and then sign up.

This post is part of a series of posts where I highlight people creating projects that help others achieve escape velocity. Beyond just blogging for pleasure, some people are looking for ways to make ends meet in the down economy. They’re looking for how they can pay some bills, or even just afford the occasional nice dinner for the family. As I discover projects and courses that seem useful, I will review them and present them to you for consideration. It’s part of understanding how human business works.

I like the way Hip Hop guys have reinvented business, taken alot of there ideas and taken them into record companies and broke the rules. Business should be for everyone no matter where or who they are.

Bit disconcerting that there's no earnings disclaimer, privacy policy or other details that online courses normally provide. Normally front and center so folks know what they're getting into, and that their info won't be used once a member.

  • http://twitter.com/Stranahan Lee Stranahan

Danny – privacy & earnings disclaimers, money back guarantees and so on are so ubiquitous that they are basically boilerplate. So we didn't include but if it makes you feel more comfortable – no, this is a not a scam to sell your valuable information by cleverly baiting you with 30+ hours of content. And we had two people ask for money back – one suddenly lost their job, the other just didn't dig us in any way, shape or form – and of course we gave it to them, Because…ya know…that's what everyone does, disclaimer or not.

We're not making any earnings claims at all, either – not that kinda course. If you follow our advice you might decide to get rich or you might decide that money isn't really as important as you thought it was…the course isn't about a one sized fits all destination.

    Hey there Lee,

Don't recall saying it was a scam, just that normal course of action for most online earnings courses offer disclaimers and privacy statements. Heck, even “normal blogs” offer this. And you do offer some copy that suggests this course is about making money – one example being:

“If you CAN’T endure a job any longer, how CAN you earn enough income to live the way you want?”

But it's not about making me feel comfortable, to use your quote – it's simply making folks interested in the course feel comfortable. After all, these are the folks that will be looking to change their approaches – surely feeling comfortable in the course should be a given?

As someone who has listened to most of the course (still have a few hours to get through, it's huge!!) I can say that this course is not about being or feeling comfortable.

It's about getting okay with being uncomfortable.

So if people really need to feel comfortable, they are probably not a good fit for this program.

I think when anyone throws down any money, Elizabeth, a feeling of comfort is still nice to have, no? ;-)

  • http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com ElizabethPW

I disagree completely. I only invest in something (whether I'm investing money or time) if it pushes my boundaries, takes me outside of being comfortable. That's pretty much my philosophy of life and business, when it comes down to it.

But obviously you have a different philosophy – so I suspect we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I appreciated your comment and the chance it gave me to clarify, so forgive me because I forgot to say thanks.

You didn't say scam, but that's what the concern is and it's natural. That's the area that nobody wants to feel uncomfortable about — 'Is this a scam?”

We talk about making money, but not in a 'earnings disclaimer way'. We specifically say that you probably need less money than you think to do to achieve your goals..once you figure out your real goals. But the whole point of the course is talk about things that Johnny and I know worked for us personally and trying to extrapolate some wider principles and techniques that people can apply to their own lives.

This week (right now, actually) I had a very personal crisis that I used a lot of QTR thinking to try and solve. I talk about it here – http://questiontherules.com/this-time-its-perso… – it's just me talking (no Johnny) but I think one thing you'll see is the amazing quality of the people who signed up in the comments. Risk takers with heart…I love 'em.

    Amen Chris.

Just started QTR a few weeks ago and already feeling like there is more great content than my noggin can possibly wrap around.

Glad to see QTR spreading its wings of awesome and moving around the interwebs. It's an A+ experience so far.
