Rethink Your Web Presence

When I go to your website (or blog, or twitter page, or facebook page), what do you want me to do? What do you REALLY want me to do? Don’t answer that right away or glibly. What do you want me to do on your site? How do you want me to feed into your systems?

This is what I want to give you: a few questions to consider, from the same side of the fence as your prospective customer/visitor/reader/member whatever. Remember, these questions are not from your side of the fence. They’re from the other side, the important side.

Answer These Questions for Your Audience

Who do you want me to be? – In designing my up and coming new website, I had this great breakthrough. And I started working on it, and then I realized that this design I had in mind would be much more “male” in flavor and I wanted women to feel welcome. I want older people 35-60(ish) to come, so I know I want my font to be large enough and distinct enough. So, that’s what I thought about for my would-be buyer. Who do you want me to be on your site?

How will I know that I belong?
– Will I be able to see “me” in your site? Will it make sense? When I go to Runner’s World, I don’t see me. There aren’t any fat trail runners there. I don’t feel like I belong there. (I probably do, but you know what I mean?) How will I know that I’m supposed to be on your site?

What do you want to show/tell me?

You’ve dragged me here. Make it easy to find what you’re hoping I consume. This is your main thing. This is where you want me to get really excited.

What do you want me to do?

I’m here. Now what? You want me to buy your something? You want me to hire you? You want me to sign up for your something? Make that really obvious. This is where things go the most wrong, I think.

How will we keep this relationship going?
– You want me here more than once, right? I’m hoping you do. How can we do that? Shall I subscribe to your blog? Do you want me to do a newsletter? What’s next for us? (This one’s pretty important too, eh?)

How shall I talk of you to my friends?
– You don’t want the relationship to end with me, do you? How can we find some of my friends that will also like you? What message do you want me to carry? Is there a way we can do that together?

How Do You Answer This?

I don’t know, but I’m thinking these end up being important questions. What do you think? How does your site stack up?

Thanks for these questions, Chris. Particularly relevant to writing a daily blog such as yours, I think, because the information our readers see first keeps changing all the time. So it's difficult to always give out the same signals all the time. One solution I've found for this is to generally always starting my first paragraph with talking about the topic of my blog (creating legacy), and then relating whatever else I want to say that day to that. By the way, I've found that this way of doing things also helps with SEO for the main keyword, if that is also the theme of the blog. If anyone here has any other ideas about how to meet the expectations of your readers on a daily blog please let me know. Thanks again for the thought-provoking questions, Chris.

After reading this post, I feel even better about my redesigned website (launched 11/09). As a real estate agent, I see so many of my cohorts falling into 1 of 2 camps. Most offer a basic template website with lots of generic information on home buying & selling, plus a home search. But they don't do anything to convert their visitors into connections and ultimately clients. The other group, the bloggers, thinks they are much better than the template agents. But most are still missing the boat since their focus becomes about their articles…talking about the community, the housing market or a few properties without making it very clear that they are asking their visitors to hire them.

I hope that I've found a better solution. I have a home page that is totally different than the blog, and which is designed to tell people what I want them to do and how to get to the pages that can help them with each task. I even included a multiple choice list in my contact form to remind them of the things I can help them with.

I honestly can say that I feel that I'm on track for each of your questions. And the result is that I'm seeing more people register for a home search, more people visiting the pages I want and more people calling me to ask for help.

Kevin – thank you *so* much for this.

This is what I love to see – the enablement of offline engagement. This is bringing people over to your home and actually DOING something together.

I'll be writing about this later this week!

Awesome! An update…….the judge in the case did a 180 in his attitude this past Friday, and released to attorney's fees to Danny's attorney after refusing to pay him (with Danny's money) for 7 months. I believe it is because of the 10 people that met up, wore the “Free Danny Tate” t-shirts, and showed up in court to provide scrutiny.
The Awareness concert is on the 23rd, and then his “final” court hearing is on May 24th/25th. With the help of Facebook………i'm going to try to turn that scrutiny into 200. I think we can do it.
Six years ago…….this level of quick engagement, and networking would never have happened, and Danny would have been alone in that courtroom on Friday. Thank God for Facebook, and all the tools that we use to share important stories now.
I'm constantly excited and hopeful by this.
    Kevin

Great 'give-away' blog, Chris. You are a genius with your media because you know how to give and give and 'go the extra mile', AND you know (now) how to ask for value in return. Remember this, Chris: NO ONE RECEIVES VALUE UNLESS THEY GIVE VALUE. WE DO NO ONE A FAVOR BY JUST GIVING AND NOT EXPECTING SOMETHING IN RETURN. Nature (life) just doesn't work that way. Great, bog … thanks, rob

Thanks for this Chris. It's so timely for me. We're starting work on a new project for an organization that insists that providing their members information and building relationships are separate and you can't do both at the same time. We've been struggling a bit to figure out a way to explain and help them understand that the two parts work together. These questions are a huge help! Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge!!

Thank you for such a thought provoking post, Chris. I have found it extremely useful.
There was already the famous Proust questionnaire, we now have the Brogan questionnaire. :o)

This is the more so, as it is actually most timely for me, as I was only last week posting on “Rethinking my web presence”. http://pascalvenier.com/blog/?p=666

Keep up the good work. :)

Great as usual, Chris. Although I gotta tell ya, my first thought when I finished reading was not how to improve my site but “Oh crap! I'm now 'older.'” Oh well, I'm off to pick up a nice white belt and revamp some client sites. :)

    G'Day Chris,
Very useful post. It reminds me of that very old saying “Most salespeople would be far more successful if they just knew how to ask for the order.” Most of what you're saying is part of that process.

May I add another: If you have a blog, make it as easy as possible for people to comment on your posts. Place a comment link after each post. Don't make them search all over your site to make a comment.

    Regards

    Leon

Chris, so when you refer to your “up and coming new website,” you're not referring to the newly redesigned chrisbrogan.com? Are you redesigning this site again so soon, or are you talking about a different site? (Always eager to see you in action!)

Great post, Chris. You've described the process I use for my own site and when creating sites for clients. It's helpful to get validation from someone like you. Now I know I'm on track. I ask myself these question on a weekly if not daily basis. And everyone once in a while I see something that I missed completely and needs to be changed. Talking to a potential client last week I listened carefully to the language HE used to describe one of my services. It was different language and gave me a light bulb moment which prompted me to tweak my copy. Thanks for the great reminders presented succinctly.

Great advice. This is a common problem I see with my Niche Affiliate Marketing System conference attendees: they have these great ideas, yet the outward message they send is for them – not for their potential visitor, buyer, client, etc.

Great approach Chris, thanks for sharing! Creating content must be valuable to others, you have to think and perform writing according to other´s needs and preferences based on what you can provide to them. Build a relationship you can grow over the time, not just a one time meeting.

I recommend readers to join conversations at http://startups.com and get involved on other business people actual situation with their businesses. Help and you will get help from them!

This is brilliant advice Chris. And especially true for bloggers. Most bloggers think in terms or an audience that is already familiar with them, but we know that up to 80% of visitors are first time comers…and most of these are coming from search.

Businesses need to know the keywords that are driving their traffic…that's telling intent and should guide not only blog content strategies, but also CTA's

You “practicalized” (we can make up words, right) what I cover in each marketing class as the first three steps of any marketing effort – Audience, Objective, Message. Those are sometimes tough to explain, but your Jeopardy approach of putting it in the form of a question helps me, and will help my students think about it in a more practical manner, thereby “practicalizing” the process. THANKS.

There is a clear lack of task identification for websites. Site visitors come to do something, and they want to do that with as little delay as possible. Sites are busy telling consumers how happy they are to see them, and all time that could be saved by the magical solutions they have. Make the key tasks obvious, respect the visitors time, get them on their way as quickly as possible. If you do not know what the the key tasks are – then you have even bigger problems!

Dara, your comment points toward where technology meets the ways in which content naturally travels. The problem I see for many brands is that they adhere to ideas of stickiness that make more sense for content providers that are selling advertising against content than for marketers whose whole goal, presumably, is to get people talking about their brand, their products, their content, etc. For the latter, the idea of building one centralized platform and expecting people to come to it seems quite misguided. Instead, the question is how do you get the content circulating in the places where people are discussing related issues, and technologically then how do you best assist in that process.
