An Interview with Rex Hammock

Rex Hammock is the CEO of Hammock, a publishing and media company (and much more). I’ve been a fan of his for years, and follow him on Twitter as well as Google+ and anywhere else I can find Rex messing around. In this 20+ minute video, we talk about Google+ (no shocker there), but also the future of publishing (especially interesting because Rex is doing a lot of work in the business to business publishing space) and then most interestingly about loyalty. It’s a very very interesting (and free flowing) interview, and there are little nuggets of value to pull out all the way through it. Here’s the video:

Thanks, Chris. Our in-house videographer has already lectured me on crowding my recently purchased webcam — so I apologize for being, like, 2 inches from the screen. And I’m flattered to know that someone of whom I am such a fan, is amont the 12 people who read my blog. ; ) Thanks for inviting me to chat.

I really loved your interview Rex-especially the Peanuts-Google Analogy. I know you said a lot of other important stuff, but that was the one that really stuck out to me. It was pretty accurate-and descriptive

      I think it’s so fun, Rex. You’re a great guest and we’ll talk more soon. : )

This is outstanding! Rex – I love your passion after all your years in the biz. We need passion and we need to help people become better cooks. Well done, Chris.

    • http://rexblog.com Rex Hammock

Thanks, Kneale. The people I work with have threatened to get me a T-Shirt that says, “I’m not mad, I’m just passionate.” I have to throttle back sometimes. ;  )

      • http://www.socialmediamercenary.com Leslie A. Joy

Please make a second t-shirt that says that for me. :)

      • http://www.knealemann.com Kneale Mann

Never throttle back! Passion is something sorely missing in far too many places.

Great insight here. Thanks. Two things…

    1. I keep hearing people compare Facebook & Google+ but what about LinkedIn? Rex’s points about Google+ for business make me think Google+ could hurt LinkedIn a lot too.

    2. Chris, curious… when you record these videos are you going straight from your Mac camera? Your resolution always looks so good and no hiccups.

I’ll jump in on the LinkedIn, question — with a guess. I think Linked in has a unique position as a “Contacts” tool and professional network that, if you were to use a Venn Diagram to show where Google+ and LinkedIn overlapped, would be completely in LinkedIn’s part of the diagram. Back in the early days of LinkedIn, it was pretty much 100% such a service. It was only after the popularity of Facebook that LinkedIn dramatically pivoted into the social networking aspect of what it does. So, IMHO, I think Google+ could encroach some — or significantly — on any of the “group” things that LinkedIn offers. However, the “job finding,” “contacts,” “resume” things LinkedIn does are still easily defended by that company.

Doing this with Skype on a really strong hard line.

      • Chris Rocks

What do you use to record the calls and create the “split screen” playback?

  • David Siteman Garland

What is this…The Rise To The Top? ;)

Chris – Good to see you doing Skype interviews you handsome devil.

:) There is only one “The Rise To The Top” haha

This is a really great interview, lots of insights of the how publishing evolved…

  • http://www.commun.it SharelOmer

Very personal and friendly interview :) the chemistry between Chris and Rex is HOT :)

Great approach that G+ is not competing with Twitter.. i agree :)

Rex as an expert in publishing and media give great insights of social media platform and how people *really* communicate…
R – “I believe that G+ is going to be a good B2B tool”.. i like it.. leverage a community to B2B, where FB is more for friends…

Great stuff that make you think :)
    Thanks for sharing this interview.

Hmm. Not sure about that HOT chemistry. But I’d be up for a buddy movie if I got to drive Chris’ car in it.  ;  )

      • http://www.commun.it SharelOmer

:) Chris is the kind of person whom its very hard not to have “hot” chemistry :) 10x for the reply :)  its a pleasure to meet. Sharel

Thanks, Chris. That was fun. Sorry to viewers that I was about two inches from the camera — scary. I’ll back off later.
