I spent the better part of yesterday walking around town, asking the local business owners to put a stack of my company flyers in their stores, and I quickly learned that walking into the store and going straight to the counter was *not* the best way to go.  Instead, if I went in and looked around a bit, maybe bought something small or just chatted with the owner about their business, they were much more open to helping me promote my own work.
