Strategic Blogging and Some Tactics to Nail It

June 30, 2009 · Comments

cyclist Once you get past the “should my company be blogging” hurdle and into the “okay, so now what?” part of the race, the next question you might find yourself facing is, “What should I be doing to marry my blogging to my business goals?” If you’re in charge of making blogs deliver a business value to your organization, here’s some thoughts to consider. (Note: this is a business-minded post. You can use blogs however you like.)

A Strategy is the Path You Choose to Take

Before we dive in, just realize this: strategy is a word that’s rarely used properly. Check out Erika Andersen’s Being Strategic if you need more on the right way to think about strategy. If not, just accept that strategy just means “the best way I can think of to get to the goal.”

Strategies are flexible. People don’t realize this. If your goal is to land more sales, then making one decision and sticking to it is not likely going to be the best way to plan your blogging methods. For instance, if you decide to write about product features every post, and that doesn’t convert to sales, would you still do it? No. You’d adjust your strategy and try new content approaches.

With that all said, let’s go in a bit more.

Sample Goals to Start our Strategies

Here’s a quick list of some ways one could use a blog in alignment with business strategy:

  • Customer Loyalty
  • Product/Service education
  • Lead Generation
  • Organic Keyword Marketing Assistance (SEO/SEM)
  • Entertainment
  • Awareness
  • Thought leadership
  • Announcements

There are, obviously, many more ways to use blogs, but you get the picture. From these goals, we can devise strategies.

Blogging Strategies

  • Customer Loyalty – make a “customer of the week” post. Write about and promote others.
  • Product/Service education – write several how-to posts
  • Lead Generation – write posts that attempt to move people to a conversion point.
  • Organic Keyword Marketing Assistance (SEO/SEM) – write blog posts that help you rate better for the search terms that matter to you.
  • Entertainment – create interesting posts that keep up people’s good will
  • Awareness – write frequent posts that maybe dip into many of these categories, to try and keep people interested
  • Thought Leadership – write posts that establish you or your leaders as credible industry voices with great value.
  • Announcements – use the blog as a glorified press release engine.

Again. I could write another 12 strategies each for the above-mentioned, but that’s not the point. I’m illustrating ways you can think about strategies for your blogging. Let’s go another layer down.

Tactics to Consider

  • Customer Loyalty – include pictures in every post. Link to the customer often.
  • Product/Service education – build good category support. Use sharethis.com or similar.
  • Lead Generation – make simple calls to action. Don’t confuse with too many links, pictures, or other distractions.
  • Organic Keyword Marketing Assistance (SEO/SEM) – learn which keywords you want to rank for and blog accordingly. (I’m not very into this method).
  • Entertainment – build cross-promotional efforts, like tying posts to facebook and friendfeed for more exposure. The name of the game is eyeballs.
  • Awareness – find ways to share and distribute. Look for external sharing mechanisms. The more you can cross-pollenate the message without seeming spammy, the better.
  • Thought leadership – empower your leader (whoever you choose) to share as much as possible with the community. Comments help this cause lots.
  • Announcements – be concise, and be able to share as much as possible.

What Works For You?

One thing to never forget is that you should always discount anything I say by tempering it with the understanding of what works best for you. You might be having tons of success by writing huge posts with no visual breaks. Who knows? Go with what works for you.

If you want more about the mechanics blogging, here is my best advice about blogging. Some of that might help, too.

Was this useful to you? What else did you want to share with everyone about your own successes? What’s worked or not worked for you?

  • Chris,
Great basic starting point for developing objectives and strategies around a business blog. It seems a lot (too many) companies and their consultants/agencies decide to "do" a blog and then be like Nike (that is, just do it).

Developing a set of strategies is a great roadmap to help guide them. Again, I think it's part of the social media puzzle often missing.

  • Thank you for perfect post.
We are going to use it for our blog in Turkey.

  • Hi Chris et al

I love it when, being in the UK, I can comment nice and early!

I'm sure all of us who have clients have sat down and gone through our clients objectives and outcomes, etc. But this post is very useful for me in breaking things down into even clearer guidelines. I've used the Base Camp / Outposts very successfully, so I'm looking forward to this being another tool that I can use frequently.

IMO the kind of clarity you get with a systematic approach like this is priceless. So thanks, Chris!
  • Good stuff, Chris, thank you. I was so proud of my latest post and now I realize it is lacking... need to be more creative.
  • Chris you're right. You have to be flexible when using strategy's.
  • Thank you for breaking this down simply and concisely. I've been writing our business blog for two months, but I've never blogged before. I'm always unsure if I'm even in the ballpark when I post. I'm more confident that I'm headed in the right direction, but I wasn't sure what goals to set or how to measure them. Thanks for the suggestions.
  • Spot on - wonderful advice/guide for new and refresher for seasoned bloggers. Thanks!
  • I wonder if you could elaborate on this statement:

"Organic Keyword Marketing Assistance (SEO/SEM) – learn which keywords you want to rank for and blog accordingly. (I’m not very into this method). "

You make this sound like this is somehow evil? Keywords are the words your customers and prospects use when they have a problem. Of course you would want to use those keywords in your blog posts as well as blog titles. You are doing the searcher a favor by using their language...what other language would you use?

Of the business bloggers you work with, can you tell me the % of traffic that comes from first time visitors? My experience is that most business blogs drive a significant majority of their traffic from first timers. Our client base here at Compendium Blogware averages in the mid 80% range with some in the 90's. Checking with Hubspot it seems like they see similar numbers...even their own blog is in the 65-70% range.

If you agree with this, combined with the realty that most of these first time visitors to the average business blog are coming from search....shouldn't SEO be strategy number one?

As a marketer, and to your point, we pour gasoline on the fires that are burning right? You do more of what's working and less of what's not.

I like your list, but worry that so many businesses are blogging for customer loyalty and the reality is that their customers never come to the blog...blog visitors are new people....making SEO and lead generation the biggest benefits of business blogging. This doesn't change that you should be blogging about your customer success....obviously the 'similar-situation' has been the number one selling tactic for hundreds of years.

Just use the language of the customer...use the words they use. We call them keywords.
  • I like the way you present the post.Very clear and useful for a newbie like me.
I build my strategy and what I will do is to add more details in the tactics part like, which tools or specfic action I will use or do regarding the best practices in the area.

    Thanks, great post.

  • Chris Baggot scored some big points in his comment.

"the reality is that their customers never come to the blog...blog visitors are new people"

That is a very perceptive statement and one that is gained only through experience. This amplifies the idea to use the words your visitors use to find you.

About keywords, "Organic Keyword Marketing Assistance (SEO/SEM)" works best with "long tail key phrases" not single keywords. While that may be obvious to many of us, until you've worked this angle with substantial effort, you will not understand its inherent value.

People are using much longer phrases to search than they did a few years ago. I think the average is about three words. So, instead of searching for "Chris Brogan" they may search for "Chris Brogan social network expert" or, more likely, "Chris Brogan social blog". One of these longtail searches I use a lot is "(name) on Twitter". If I run across someone that posts here or at any other blog, I will search "Chris Baggott on Twitter". More often than not I will find that Chris and follow him.

In fact, the long tail searches outnumber the single keyword searches in total. So, any effort to use the long tail phrases will usually pay off very well by increasing your targeted site visitors.
  • Thanks Greg...it's Chris Baggott with two 'T's' btw :-)

Your point on multi-word searches are spot on. The fastest growing segment of search is 8 word searches! http://tinyurl.com/n4fyy2
  • Chris,

One thing I'm looking into right now that could go under tactics is a writing schedule that ties back to the various strategies you have listed. We want to add value every step of the way, and are trying to figure that out for our target readers.

    -chris
  • As an exec with a company getting ready to launch our blog once a redesign goes live, this is invaluable information. It also lets me know that the consultants we have advising us on the social media front are spot-on with how they're suggested we handle things thus far. We have clear goals, content-rich posts and are excited to see our readership grow alongside our rapidly growing company. Our thoughts on blogging now versus when we first approached the idea are very different, and for that...we're glad!
  • Thank you, and great piece. Finally, another is talking about strategy.
  • Guy McCullough
    Chris,

    Enjoyed this post...

I have to say, however, that in the marketing world, we would label every one of your strategies (above) as a tactic since they all begin "write posts" or "create interesting posts." Those are all at the tactical level, i.e. the trees and not the forest.

Your advice is sound, IMHO, but it doesn't include a STRATEGY.

Here's a decent take on strategy vs. tactics for your consideration.

    http://bit.ly/97qfz

    Keep up the good work!
  • I agree. The strategies and tactics are a little muddled, but I this is all great and I am adding some of this to our social media strategy.
  • Good topic Chris. I think for small business the blog has some key advantages.
    It keeps a history
It is optimised in google search
    It can be very targeted
    It is free

The down side is you need to dedicate some time to it. I think it is worth having as part of your marketing mix especially if you are in the services area where reputation and establishing credibility is key.

Great tips and information on blogging
I think setting a goal or the "target" of your blog is a great place to start
I would add after it's written drawing the attention of your target to your blog via social media and/or bookmarking networks
  • Your blog posts are always very good Chris and thanks for sharing your wisdom and knowledge.

The statement, “What should I be doing to marry my blogging to my business goals?” is a great one to start with and I'd never thought of it in exactly that way. If you look at marriage from the standpoint of unity and cohesiveness then there's a great parallel.

The thought process created by utilizing your keys is very helpful.
  • Your point that everyone has to use a strategy that works for them in blogging is well taken. I do see a lot of bloggers who successfully write very long chunky texts with very little to break them up. I also see others who rely almost solely on pictures to drive eyeballs to their blog. I like the way you address different tactics to different kinds of blog posts, which is a "Well, duh!" kind of thing -- and at the same time something we tend not to think clearly about if we get stuck in a rut. I've followed a lot of your tactics and used them in my blogs. I like the look and feel of them. I guess my question would be, when do you decide that your strategy isn't working for you? How long do you give it? 100 blog posts? A year? I know each case is individual, and maybe it has to do with your individual tolerance and level of patience, but I'd love to know if you have a "line in the sand" after which you say, "This isn't working. I'm switching strategies."
  • Chris - your 'Blogging Strategy' section is especially pertinent, as this (or other strategies) could translate into an editorial calendar, i.e. on Mondays write about Customer Loyalty, on Tuesdays focus on Lead Generation, etc. Editorial calendars are the best way I know of to keep the Content Development Engine purring. Thanks for breaking it down.
  • As the owner of ImageWear Solutions, a distributor of affordable advertising solutions through the use of promotional products and logo corporate apparel, I have struggled with the start of our first blog. Should it be product reviews, new product updates or educational information on affordable advertising solutions? This article helps me break down some great choices and steers us in the right direction.

    Thanks for the great article!
  • If you're going to be blogging on a "Company Blog" it's important to be aware of the fact of the legal consequences of what you say. This is one of the latest areas in which companies are being sued. Stating your opinion on a company blog goes beyond First Amendment rights. Don't even think about commenting about your competition because that can be regarded as slander not your personal opinion. Just my two cents

  • This is a very handy reference for the idea of setting up anything to do with business. There is one thing missing I think...and please forgive me for my formal education as a school techer...along with strategy you must also incorporate methods.

The lists of methods support the stategy to get to the goal. Why? Because unless everyone in your audience thinks or comprehends things exactly the same way...you'll have to reach that audience on a variety of different levels. The same is true in preparing a PR/Marketing plan. First the goal or objective. The strategy supports that effort and the methods propogate to a wide range of thinkers who can act and participate in your efforts.

I'm saving this blog....it's got plenty of good reminders on how to do the best work possible.

  • I have to agree.

Everyone should have a strategy and it helps when you have a purpose and a go to kit.
  • One strategic piece about blogging often ignored is two-way communication. A good blogging strategy will include replying to blog responses and to comments about your company/product on other blogs. You must be part of the global conversation.
  • These are good tips to remember. I think they all work the best as being mixed actually.
  • totallyace
