I was eagerly awaiting this one, as Terry is renowned for his ideas on networking. It’s a slender volume packed full of information, and if business networking is important to you, I find this book particularly useful. (Quick note: I wrote the foreword, so if that biases me, you can take four points off for grace.)

It’s written with execution in mind, and thus, earns my respect. Here’s the video I shot of it:

I’ve already raved about Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. Watch the video again, if you want:

The book is about story, but it’s not exactly a book about writing. It’s about seeing your life like a story. It’s about living a better story. It’s about learning how to be present and interact in your life’s story.

Quite simply: it’s the type of book that can help you change your life, if you’re willing to do the work.

I spoke to Michael Hyatt at Thomas Nelson, Don Miller’s publisher. He’s a great guy, and he’s endured my public speaking a few times so far, so I give him extra credit for that. Michael very kindly offered me 100 books to give away, knowing just how much I loved Don’s book.

So, for you, a challenge:

Get a Copy of Donald Miller’s Book

(This is only open to folks in the US for this particular project. But you should still consider getting the book, no matter.)

Here’s what I’d love to do. I’d love for you to write a quick blog post about the importance of story in your life. That’s it. If you want, link back to http://www.chrisbrogan.com/importance-of-story, so I’ll see the trackbacks as well.

When you’ve submitted your post, fill out this form, and give us the URL where we can see the story. Work for you?

It’s a great book and deserves a lot of attention in 2010. I hope you decide to check it out.

My friend, Jon Swanson sent me a copy of Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life (amazon affiliate link). Miller is the author of probably my favorite book on religion, BLUE LIKE JAZZ, which is more like, “A not-exactly-buying-it-all person’s guide to a perspective on religion.” This book, however, is about story.

Miller has a very simple premise threaded through this book (which covers the time in his life that people came and decided to make a movie about Blue Like Jazz), which is simply this: if your life is a story, why not make it a better story? It sounds simplistic, but there’s a lot to it. In Miller’s case, one of the first things he did was go from watching the Tour de France to getting off the couch and getting a bike, and from there, he took on a few bicycling challenges, including a cross-country ride.

That’s the point, that you can move from a dull story to writing your own life into something a bit more engaging and interesting.

The book is a total winner and I loved every bit of it. Here’s my quick video review:

This is the kind of book you buy a bunch of times in a row. But then again, Blue Like Jazz was like that for Jon. He “lent” me a copy months ago, maybe years ago. I can see that I’ll be loaning out my copy and buying new ones over and over. Maybe you will, too.

The affair just grows and grows. And now, Tom’s done the whole “compile some good blog posts into a better book” thing. It’s awesome. Some of it is so simple you’ll kick yourself for not doing it already. The rest of it is thought-provoking and heart-felt. You’ll get something out of this book. And it’s HUGE. Almost 400 pages. Just a big giant helping of the man himself. Thanks, Tom.

**Audiobook coming soon, but not for a bit. Kindle coming soon, but not for a bit.

Who Should Want This Book?

First off, the book is a collection of information that you might have read about here on [chrisbrogan.com]. Most of it comes from blog posts, tidied up to be useful to you. But that’s the point.

This book is for people who are less likely to read my blog. It’s also a way to have my information distilled in a static form so you can refer to bits as you need them. That’s one benefit to it.

Another benefit? You can share this with folks who might not normally read the blog who might need to get what we’re doing here in social media.

Make sense?

It’s Not the NEW Stuff

It’s the basics. It’s the little tricks and ideas. It’s suggestions of what to do next. Is it new and mind-blowing? No, not really. It’s important. Yes, it’s important.

Special Thanks

This book wouldn’t exist without my mom and dad. Steve Brogan and Diane Brogan did tons and tons of work on this book. My wife, Katrina, helped out, as well. Imagine that: a book brought to life by family. Hands-on by people who are NOT social media experts, but who get it. They all use these tools in their own ways, very differently from me. And yet, they use them.

Will you?

I admit that as a pro speaker, I wasn’t sure what I’d take from it. Well, I took tons from it, and you might, too, either as a beginner or someone with some speeches under your belt. Here’s a quick video review:

Anyhow, it’s a keeper. Thanks Nick, and thanks Tim.
