I was reading Darren Rowse’s post, What I Learned at Search Engine Bootcamp, and it reminded me about something that we haven’t talked about here: search is part of social media. Only, it’s the part that most people who embrace social media don’t talk much about.

Search Engine Optimization is one thing. Search Engine Marketing is another. (SEO/SEM). It’s not my role to explain it all to you here. Instead, I’m telling you something simple: get reading and get learning. Learn how the mechanics of the web impact the work you’re doing with social media.

Three Blogs to Start With:

Search Engine Land

SEOmoz

SEOBook

There are plenty of others, but you can discover those.

And read Darren’s post. It will give you a taste of why you should pay attention.

We can’t just focus on the “blogging and Twitter are awesome” side, if we’re interested in advancing the performance of business communications over the web. If we’re intending to have cafe-shaped conversations, it’s our responsibility to make sure those conversations have impact.

Search is part of social.

Do you have any other resources you want to share with people?

You want that? Go to Aaron Wall’s home. That’s where I found this interview with Neil Patel, a legend in social media marketing (says Wall, and I can’t disagree because I don’t know Neil). There are some great points in the interview, including lots of information on how Neil gets information to rise up from the clutter.

Whether or not you agree with the methods prescribed, you should be aware of how they all work, and what Neil’s doing to build his reputation as a successful social media marketer. I’m definitely reading Aaron’s blog and giving all this information some thought. You might, too.

Points to Jennifer Laycock and team for their Small Business Marketing Unleased conference, coming to Houston, Texas for April 21st & 22nd. I think the premise of their conference is clear: 10 smart search and online marketing experts teach a small group (limited to 200 seats) lots of stuff, with a promise that they won’t talk over anyone’s head. Simple sell.

Jennifer and company are out there doing good grassroots stuff, and really connecting through all the interesting methods. I like their YouTube video:

Are you a small business? Are you interested in learning more about this kind of thing? This might be a show for you to check out.
