Testing- Audio from My iPhone

June 27, 2009 · Comments

If this works, I’ll be submitting audio posts from the road. No idea what this looks like in your RSS or elsewhere. This post is about being a dad on the eve of his first vacation.

Great to hear your voice in a podcastlet, so to speak.

Getting ready to go away is sometimes the worst part of vacation- the hype, the prep. But once you start to just enjoy and be in the moment, it gets a lot better. I usually feel hassled at first, but then get into the swing of no routine, or a new routine if we're in a place longer than about 2 days. But my favorite vacations are those when we go and rent a house at the beach, or stay with friends- you get a home base with the comforts of home, but the ability to explore a new environment and play as well.

    Hope you enjoy!
  • Chris,

It works! And the sound quality's pretty darn good too. True, users have to download
the file and open it in iTunes to listen to it, but no doubt it won't be long before you have embedded files playing from an in-blog Flash player, such as this: http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/.

But either way, first rate. You've inspired me to offer grander things on my fledgling blog (feel free to delete my link if it's not permitted) http://garybloomer.tumblr.com/

I'm sure your readers look forward to listening to more of your adventures and opinions. Enjoy your much needed vacation.

  • Interestingly, it plays straight on the page at posterous. Maybe @steverubel was right after all. : )
  • oh you're such a cutie (in NZ that translates to a form of endearment as opposed to "oh you're hot" - or anything else :)
I like the podcast. You speak like you write. The sound quality was great. It added too some authenticity which I also liked.
You deserve a great vacation! or holiday as we call them down here. Safe and happy travels to you, your wife and Violet (I can't remember your son's name but I think it's Jack?) Anyway. Enjoy.
And may the force be with you :)
  • Very nice, Chris.

From Feeddemon, I just clicked the link, it downloaded and played automatically in a QT window.

Easy enough for me to listen to straight away - I normally don't with audio/video.

Admire you taking a holiday - it's on my to do list (!).
  • Chris,

Seek out and find an app called 'Audioboo', (http://audioboo.fm) I think you'll like it a lot.
We use it on The Really Mobile Project and it really does kick ass.

They are one of our sponsors but I write this to you under know contractual obligation whatsoever. I'm not even an iPhone user... ;D

  • Are you using iPhone's new Voice Memo feature? I've found the quality is decent, but only after stripping it to mono, as one side will have a 'copter effect - a chopping stuttering sound in one ear.

I got the same thing with your post - one side was clear, the the other was just noise.

I haven't used Audioboo, as James suggests, but I hear it's a good app.
  • We trust that you'll have a great time on your very-well deserved vacation. We took a similar trip several years back - very freewheeling, no reservations. It was awesome. Hope yours goes as well.
  • Hey Chris,

I liked the post - your voice sounded great - but didn't like the fact that the file forced iTunes to open. (Which also meant I had to delete it after I listened to it.)

Overall review: content good, delivery system ... not so much.

  • Chris,
The audio was fantastic. You seemed so serious in the beginning though. I have never done a podcast so I have no idea on how they work. Other than clicking the file and listening. I am more of a writer and photograph person who learns through audio.

    Have fun!

Really like the audio update. The volume, as noted, was a bit low, but the clarity was crystal clear and there was zero static or ambient noise. Very cool indeed. Hope you are enjoying your much-deserved vacation. I am in NJ and the weather here has been glorious for the last few days, so hopefully the same where you are.
  • This does work. There were few clicks involved but nothing too serious.

I could totally identify with what you said. Happens to both my husband and me.

My husband is Jewish and it kind of reminds me of the ritual of the weekly Sabbath. It's really supposed to be as much of a purification and alignment process as much as it is "fun."

Since most of the rest of us don't get to have that as part of a weekly ritual, we don't have the vocabulary that would help us understand that vacation = letting go. Letting go = uncomfortable. Uncomfortable = Oh, I don't like these feelings that are coming up. Etc.

It's like the transition is necessary to get to the fun.

We also go through it at the end of a major creative project. For him that's putting on a play. For me that's a big article or book deadline.

It's great to have those somewhat adrenalin-spurred goals but when they have been realized, it can actually temporarily be a little depressing.

It always passes though. And downtime is an important part of the creative cycle. I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

    Happy vacation!
  • Also, been meaning to mention this somewhere...I signed up twice for your newsletter but still haven't received anything. Not sure if this is an issue or...? Not sure. Am sure that there is no rush. :) Just wanted to mention it.
