The Thank You Economy – Video Book Review

I purchased and read Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book, The Thank You Economy (amazon affiliate link). What I liked most about the book is that Gary takes on a lot of the “mushy” parts of social media, but not from the side of “this stuff really has metrics to back it up,” but from the side of “screw the metrics; you can see the results in other ways.” Those are my words and not his. But that’s what I kept feeling. I liked the part on the book where he took a very different look at the Old Spice ad campaign and made an observation I didn’t really expect, nor have I heard anyone else ever make. There’s a bunch to consider in the book, and Gary’s done a good job with this one. I like it bunches more than Crush It, which sold plenty enough that maybe I’m the only one with that opinion.

But listen, with Gary, you’ve got to take everything he says and at least consider it. You have to see that unbridled passion and ask yourself whether you can do something even vaguely similar for your business. With the Thank You Economy, there’s a bunch of places to grab onto and run with, so get a copy and blast through it with your yellow highlighter and notepad.

I’ve been following Gary for the last 4 years. And I just experienced everything he said since day 1 with customer care. I had a problem with Barnes and Noble when I ordered my copies of the Thank you Economy. I tweeted that B&N service s***ks and he replied to me within 2 minutes asking me to send him an email to tell him what happened… Believe it or not that was last saturday… I received a CALL from Phil Toronto at Vaynermedia on Sunday (!) afternoon on behalf of Gary to chat about this and see what they can do…. So if people think that Gary and his team are only big on the Bla Bla … they’re completely wrong… He walks the talk!

Chris, thanks for the review. Considering buying it now after initially believing it to be for bigger companies. Quick question on the ability to overlook metrics: I work with big ad agencies used to metrics to prove their value/bill clients — does it talk about how to get around this and fundamentally shift how the big guys think? Or are nimble, younger, smaller agencies the way of the future?

I read “The Thank You Economy” on my Kindle. I wrote a review on my blog and told about how the Dell Social Media Team uses principles from this book to connect with customers. The brand that touches and creates the most emotion will win. The heart wants what the heart wants.

Its a good book. Specially the insights he has provided are outstanding but i think some of his suggestions cannot be applied in all the businesses due to location and country to country social, economical, market differences.
