The Beginning – Kitchen Table Talks

Starting a new video series for 2010. Kitchen Table Talks will be all about the experiments and nurturing and big ideas that bring us success in our lives. In this episode, I highlight two books: Change the Way You See Everything through Asset-Based Thinking (amazon affiliate link), and 180 climbing the two ladders to inner strength & outer freedom (amazon affiliate link). Hank and Rob sent me the books because they thought I’d love them, and they were right. Here’s the first video of our new series together, Kitchen Table Talks:

If you want the books, check it out here.

Imitation has helped me build my business along with learn how to be successful in sports! It's crazy how finding an expert and kind of “copy-catting” their strategies cuts the time down in becoming successful. Mimicking professionals in any industry is brilliant! I'll need to check out the book!

    Looking forward to more!

Can totally vouch for the first one being worth the read. Really struck a chord with where I was at that time and I look daily for ways to change how I'm seeing things. Will have to scope out the other one as well. (Off to add it to my Readernaut “plan to read” list.)

Just bought Change the Way You See Everything. Good stuff Chris.

    Hi CHris;
    I love your blog posts!
.You have so much to teach all of us. I am trying to find a link to click on that will permit me to hear the video and it is not appearing. I use Mac Safari coupled with Mac VoiceOver which does a great job of making the web accessible to me. As a blind person who relies on the accessibility tools in order to view information on the internet I definitely notice when a portion of a web site is not accessible. Your Blog site is totally accessible with the exception of the video player and any links that would activate it. I am sure this is an easy thing to fix. THere are many sites that provide accessible links to the imbedded video. If there was a standard web link that would be labeled “play video” as an example I know that the information that you post would be absolutely accessible.

Gotcha, Kevin. Thank you for the feedback. I'll make sure to include a simple, clickable, auto-play the audio link every time from now on.

Thanks Chris! I've flipped through “Change” a few times – great book.

I like the idea of your kitchen table talks. It's always nice to hear about something different than the same old same old. Although, would it be possible to go into a little bit more detail during your talk. You didn't give any specific examples from the books or explain why they are so good.

I'm definitely looking forward to more! Keep 'em coming! :)

  • http://thoughtbythought.net/ Tresha Thorsen

Excited. Awesome. Thanks for these. Changing how you see everything is a mighty hefty mandate. But sounds like there's some good nuggets therein. And the other looks like a good guide for just being able to check off we're getting stuff done each day. Thanks for these recs. Okay: where were you sitting? I was trying to figure out of those lights behind are pretend cupcakes? so were you in your daughters' room? I'm always curious bout where you shoot and why. Liked the coziness and “pink and blue and cheery” colors of this nook. You wow me with how much you get in in 120 seconds. Well done. And big hugs of thanks.

Chris – re your Kitchen and the 'natural' atmosphere you have the knack to maintain.

Using video on my blog, I teach traffic tactics over coffee in an attempted casual cafe atmosphere. But I've had a devil of a job getting it to be real and not 'performed'. Even my flashy set seems plastic & cheesy now, so trashing that and starting over the 'right' way a couple of weeks from now.

Ordered the book. Thanks. I do everything at my kitchen table.

Hi Chris, I have paged thru “Change” a few times in the bookstore, and I thought it would be interesting. Unfortunately something else always seemed more pressing at the time.
After reading “The Glass Bead Game” and “Anathem” last year (two books that did change how I look at time and at the act of thinking) I will move this one up on the list of 'to be acquired'.
Thanks for sharing, I am looking forward to this series of videos.

  • melindaroos

I think one of your most winning quality is your accessibility and being your natural self as opposed to being too business-like and too professional when delivering a message like this. Nothing wrong with being business like and professional, its just not effective in this kind of platform, I guess.

Even the title of this new series “Kitchen Table Talks” provides a cozy and warm yet collaborative atmosphere already that moves one to interact. Thank you for this and looking forward to the talks!

  • http://stevegarfield.com stevegarfield

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for doing your video this way. It shows people that what's most important is the message, and that video doesn't have to be perfect. You've got good sound and pretty good natural lighting, but how about setting the camera down on something? Maybe a stack of books you've got in a hoge box on the floor there. I'm all in favor of using the vlogger arm out holding hte camera approach, but I'd suggest putting the camera on something stable like maybe a tripod. I'm feeling bad for your arm right now. ;-)

  • markwilliamschaefer

Chris, it's difficult for me to believe what you say when you have affiliate sponsorship for the book sales.

  • http://www.stephendill.com Stephen Dill

I am diggin' the Kitchen Table Talks, Chris, for two big reasons: 1) short format. 2) informal setting. After reading “Crush It” (speaking of books to make us think differently!) I realized I have been holding up at least 200 blog posts over the last 2 years because I could not rationalize the time to write them well. So Gary woke me up to using video to leverage my strengths. THEN I held off starting video blogging because the background of my office is distracting. That delay just crumbled watching you in your kitchen. No more self-imposed anchors. Watch for the first announcement.

And when are we going to get some lunch and talk the future of education?

  • http://www.jtrigsby.com jtrigsby

Hey Cassie, I think the reason he keeps them short is so they are easier to digest. That being said…

Chris, I'd love to see some longer vids! I totally agree w/Cassie, some discussion and / or specific examples… good stuff. I really liked how Jeff Jarvis talked about the theory behind What Would Google Do… then the second half of the book was industry specific examples. That's really helped me a lot and I think something like that from you… well… it'd be awesome!

Love the kitchen table talks! Keep 'em comin!

Chris I like your concept of the kid imitating the professional baseball player. I guess we could all do with finding a professional to guide us in whatever pursuit we seek to achieve excellence in. I come to your blog not to imitate you but to learn. I with you provided one on one training.

  • http://www.AzzarelloGroup.com Patty Azzarello

Hi Chris, just as an aside, I LOVE the picture behind your head in this video. Did one of your kids do it? it looks like it might have a blue ribbon hanging on it…

  • shauna6

i like it! Anything that can expand the thinking process and make your thoughts go in maybe different directions than they normally would i am all for!

    Great idea, Chris.
The idea of focusing on people that are doing things RIGHT is always refreshing.
I'll look forward to your video blogs.

Love the idea of Kitchen Table Talks. Chat and connection about things that matter and motivate people to think bigger and better. Looking forward to watching this develop and being part of the conversations. I'm honored that you reviewed our book, Change The Way You See Everything. Asset-Based Thinking is all about seeing the world through the lens of what's working and possible and you certainly exemplify that in everything you do. Thanks again. Can't wait to see what you serve up next.

    Chris,

Imitation is the easiest way to implement an idea or a strategy. Sometimes it is more effective in business to imitate versus creating an new idea. Thanks for sharing this book.

  • Mitch

Great concept Chris. What's up with the shaky video cam though? Little disturbing.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

If you're in it for the video work, I'd recommend Steve Garfield. Much better videoblogger. : )

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

My now-4-year-old Harold did that last year for an art show, and won a ribbon. It's called smiley faces or something like that. He sat down one day and did several of them on a piece of paper. For a 3 year old, they said that was a lot of discipline. : )

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

Then don't believe me. I use amazon affiliate links because 1.) It's easy to find the book. 2.) I can tell people whether or not anything I said had an impact, as there's tracking. 3.) for a discretionary fund I use to attend conferences that people can't pay me to attend.

After 11 years of blogging and putting myself out there, if you don't choose to trust me because I point the book out via links, don't. It doesn't matter to me.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

    Thanks, Melinda. : )

  • http://www.AzzarelloGroup.com Patty Azzarello

Fantastic! I love it when parents get their children's work framed properly. I think that kind of encouragement and validation at that age really sinks in. I have no children, but remember some adults who used to fawn over things I made as a young child. It does wonders for self confidence and being willing to put yourself out there (which as you know makes a huge difference to success later in life).

    It is a great picture!
    :)

    thanks for the response.

Both of the books that are mentioned in the post are purchased by me, i liked it, both are very nice, beneficiary and informative. The success and growth of the direct to consumer ‘farmers markets’ actually promotes the category of produce and educates consumers on incorporating fresh fruit and vegetables as part of their diet. The trips to the farmers market are often fun, exciting, educational, entertaining, and tasty! This growth is directly supporting the growth of produce sales in the United States via traditional retailers for a myriad of reasons.
